cr47t
Just wondering, since the thread for the elections just covers the elections and not the rest of politics as much. Also, please do not move this to misc. IDC if it's a fad; this is serious and I would appreciate it if you left it in General.

LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
I try not to think about it. Most average people talking politics is usually just regurgitating information from one source or another, some more biased, and that's basically it. People get too heated so I usually try and keep some distance.
Shradow
Most people have no idea what they're talking about or are incredibly biased so I tend to ignore it and not think about it, but preferably the conversation never starts in the first place. Flash Flyer - Sakura
Honestly, the Democratic/Republican debates are definitely one thing that comes to mind; no thanks to the frontrunners in the latter arguing like grade-school kids (this is not to say that Hillary/Bernie are any better, but imo, Trump/Cruz are more cringeworthy to watch; least for me). I don't really watch their debates, but in the certain instances I have, their behavior is really undesirable. Next would probably be Congress/Senate being deadlocked on trying to get certain things passed, and mostly Republicans being obstinate about things, which lead to government shutdowns and certain key things not being passed. (i.e. Republicans being hardball about electing a new court justice after Scolia's death, even though they're literally 4-4 right now) For local level stuff, likely scandals involving one of the island mayors, city council trying to pass tax extensions to fund a rail project for O'ahu (this is why Icy and I have to pay slightly more for stuff than other islands; sales tax is higher because of said rail). That, and a bunch of other stuff. Can't say much about international things, as I don't pay much attention to them except for Japan's stuff from NHK. Politics and religions are two topics that will never end well. Especially since Cruz apparently wanted to throw religion into our system if he got elected, but I may have misheard that fact from somewhere (likely a few pages back in that other thread). Arctic55
People get too heated so I usually try and keep some distance.Me exactly, though sometimes I step in if they (people debating) are just completely wrong. Republicans being hardball about electing a new court justice after Scolia's death, even though they're literally 4-4 right nowO.K. I have to say something here. Here is why the Republicans are being hardball about this. Scolia was a strong, reliable conservative. Before his death, the Supreme Court had 4 hard liberals, 4 hard conservatives (including Scolia), and 1 swing (voted for both sides, tended to be kinda unpredictable). After Scolia's death, that puts the Supreme Court at 4 liberals, 3 conservatives, and 1 swing. With President Obama wanting to put a liberal into the Supreme Court, that would put the Supreme Court way off balance in favor of liberals at 5L/3C/1S. We all can see the immense power the judicial branch has gained in recent decades, and this would be a VERY bad unbalance in the scale of power that would effect generations, potentially the rest of American history (since these Justices get their position for life). I think everyone can agree the old 4/4/1 system was best. Liberals got some stuff they wanted, conservatives got some stuff they wanted. With a 5/3/1, that puts the majority in a potentially lifetime position of growing power. The liberals wouldn't want 5 conservative justices, and the conservatives (shown by the Republicans) don't want 5 liberal justices. That would just give one side WAY too much power (ability to shut down all opposite party laws, brute forcing all allied party laws, redefine the meanings of the Constitutional Amendments for party's agenda, etc.). epicmemesbro
Several types of people can be fitted in various archetypes, depending on the subject matter. There are those who discuss civilly. Those who don't understand the matter at hand well, but have good intentions. Those that depend on other's to take a stance so they can support it.Those that use outdated statistics, or pull them out of context. iv'e recently seen people who are looked upon for their take on something do this. Those that try to seem convincing by spamming you with statistics. It;s nice to back your claims but it would help if you explained why you used them. Those that get irate over some else's opinion they don't agree with. Those that take other people's take on something out of context, can be done purposefully or accidentally. Those that that give their take, but for some reason the discussion gets derailed even though they didn't derail it intentionally, The drama attracts them I guess. The types of discussion are in a category of their own.
