Number 2 is more fine-done and well polished than number one, aside from that fact, the color scheme for number 2 resembles a Ground type, whereas number 1 looks more like a Fire-Water hybrid, especially the mud esque landscape. I'll vote for 2

I like the SECOND SPRITE better, since the FIRST one seems FLAT and does not really resemble a ground type, while the second has GROUND matching color scheme and Clever indeed!

[Snatch Steal]

As nice as Sprite 1 is, the shading bothers me. I love how it's colored, but it just looks so 2-dimensional next to the second Sprite. The second one also looks a bit more like a ground-type.

 

The second one also manages to appear closer to a Pokemon that the other. It has a bit more complexity to it, but not so much that it's too much. All in all, the second one is quite nice.
