SOI Prerelease Report

Recommended Posts

Hey hey hey, I had a ton of fun with this event, thought I would put down everything that happened for those interested.

The format is much like I expected, with extremely dynamic boardstates caused by a combination of highly aggressive bodies and removal that is both powerful and numerous. My pulls were alright, with a promo of Ulvenwald Hydra (my friend was lucky enough to have Nahiri, Olivia, AND Sorin  in his pool).

Unfortunately, I accidentally got my pool mixed up with my prize packs, which I then just ended up sorting out into my standard cards, so all I can provide is my decklist for the event.

As you can see, I didn't have a terribly large number of bombs to use, my deck instead carried by a powerful suite of removal. Sheer Drop was a sweet removal spell in BFZ limited formats, and Murderous Compulsion is better in pretty much every way. Costing only 2 mana helps it out a ton, and pairing it with Reckless Scholar for instant-speed removal was one of the most oppressive things my deck could do. Having 3 copies of it, along with other prime removal such as Sleep Paralysis and Rabid Bite, allowed my creatures to get in for high damage. The ongoing joke was that Gloomwidow got lost and found itself in a control deck.

Westvale Abbey turned out to be an incredible mold-breaker, completely smashing through stagnant boardstates for an absurd 18-point life swing. I honestly put it into my deck because I was hoping the second ability could pressure the opponent into making trades on the block, which my deck and personal playstyle thrived on happening, but I managed to pull off the transformation a grand total of 3 times that night, 1 of which even included an equipped Slayer's Plate for additional ham.

If you have any additional questions about the event, my thoughts on the format, or my experience as a whole, feel free to ask. It was easily the most fun I have had at a prerelease, and the Lanterns with Legs littered across my LGS only can account for around 93% of said fun.

First day of rereleases was today. Got THREE mythics. One was even foil. Wolf of Devil's Breach, foil Wolf of Devil's Breach and Geralf's Masterpiece. And I continue to open nothing of value at prereleases. Was able to build a solid BR madness deck and after drawing the first match was able to win the next two for a 2-0-1 and 5 packs. Nothing very good in my prize packs though. Between the 11 packs and 14 rares the most valuable card I opened was, I believe, Foreboding Ruins.

My one friend couldn't make it so he payed for two other friends to go. One opened Promo Sorin and Westvaco Abbey, the other Promo Arlinn and Olivia, Mobilized for War. Friend that opened the Sorin was allowed to keep it so naturally he opened another in his pity pack.

I have the worse luck.

All said and done I had a ton of fun. Format seems super interesting. Most interesting deck I faced was a WU durdle Spirits with a bunch of X/4 and x/5 flyers. That ended up being the draw since he didn't really have much to pressure me. Also, mulligan a ton. I think 6 times over my 7 games.

Fevered Visions (promo), Traverse the Ulvenwald, Jace, Brain in a Jar, Geistblast... in a single sealed pool I got a lot of nice things for my EDH decks.

Built Temur werewolves, with red as the splash because it had a couple nice creatures and removal. Went 3-1, only losing in the finals due to that player's deck suddenly working (he'd bumbled that far through dumb luck) and slamming the Gitrog Temple combo on me. I cannot fight the Gitgud toad.

So we had a sealed event in place of the prerelease since the kits didn't arrive at Brazilian game stores. I opened a pretty interesting pool and decided to have fun with a 3-color Sultai control-ish deck. My finishers were Altered Ego and Elusive Tormentor. When I saw those, I just had to play with them.

Ended up going 2-1-1, losing to the store owner's Triskaidekaphobia. I ain't even mad.

Got 2 prize packs that didn't have anything. My best pull was a foil Choked Estuary, which I could even play with =D
