Simple Pokémon Splice Hack

Right now, I am just wondering who might be interested in something like this. It'll be a bit more difficult to work within GBA limitations, maybe, but it's the easiest Gen to hack, so... here we go.

Basically, since there are so many people trying out splicing now, and I just learned some things that will make for a simple hacked game:

  • Editing pretty much all pokemon data (though the one thing that strikes me as something we can't make unique is footprints, I think it only makes sense to use the footprint of the mon whose feet we use)
  • Editing existing text scripts to remove mention of mons that won't be in the game

Some of the limitations:

  • Use of 15 colors only (16-bit - the background). I have, however, implemented an existing splice as a test without doing much to it (it does get changed to 16-bit, though), and it looked decent: c52cZdd.png
  • Make the background (color not accounted for) a completely different color than what you already used
  • 64x64 only
  • You do have to make back spirtes for this. But oh, that goes for any Gen when you change the images
  • And lastly, for me, it's locked to using already existing Gen III moves, abilities, types and mechanics unless anyone else knows/feels like learning how to do that

So... yeah. If you want to participate, you can still do other things you just want to do that won't work with this for various reasons, but also work on sprites for this occasionally. Do note that of course I'll be giving the creators first input on Pokedex entry, moveset, types, base stats, IV yeilds, etc, etc, etc.

DISCLAIMER: It is not my intention to take away from the other hack idea in progress, as there's just a boom of splicing right now, which is easier to get into and I wouldn't have been the one to work on it regardless.

I'd happily contribute to this. Sounds like a fun project; could also dust off my music skills if we want/need a music guy. We shall call it...

Pokemon: YCM Edition. Champion Night or we riot.

We could. This is only intended to be the simplest of simple things, so it doesn't entirely seem necessary (plus I would personally just have the music off when playing so it doesn't get distorted, as it's pretty hard for me not to play a ROM without speeding things up), but it would be really nice.

About that Champion thing, I never really thought of it, but we could edit the trainer sprites as well. Obviously. I'm not a spriter kind of guy in general, though, so even coming up with designs probably isn't for me, but you guys just might be able to do it.

OK, so the gist of it I already explained. Just editing the Pokemon to be splices that we make. To explain a little bit, you can probably take from any gen (well, 3-5), and make sure it looks decent in 16-bit, but we want at least the amount of Pokemon that you can find/see in FireRed, so at minimum, cannot be just taken from Gen I Pokemon. We want to follow the usual rules with what might be found near the beginning, making the pseudo harder to find, evolutionary lines that make sense, etc. Also. as far as overworld sprites, at least the legendaries and whatever else you might see as Pokemon, but once again, as Yui mentioned, Night needs to be Champion.

But, it would probably help if people said what they wanted to work on (ex. I'll try my hand at the normal type guy on route 1).

I was also working on a rom hack with the help of APT. We've got the fakedex completed (backsprites included). The rest of the effort is mainly towards scripting, mapping and trainer sprites.

This is meant to be a somewhat larger community thing, so if it isn't as complex, no biggie... I'm really interested in seeing what you come up with for that. :)

Posting this here like I should have:

I want the rattata-esque and Pidgey-eque lines to be the same types (or at least flying in Pidgey's case), I want the starters to have the same primary types, I want the evolutions to follow a pattern, and I want the gym leaders to keep their types so I don't have to change as much (but I might change them anyway, who knows).

Also, I figured out how to scam the National Dex in with minimal effort (in case we wanted more evolutions than Gen I gave us), but that also means I don't know to put the fanfare in. (nah, I can do it, but if I intend to be in any way lazy with this, I might not find out how to make it not awkward when a person event gives you it) Where should I hide it? :P

I can just put the national dex in, I just thought it would be funny to hid it some place.

Anyway, no rush, but since I finished screwing with the tools necessary to actually do the things I'm intending to do, I think I'll see what other splices already made look decent in game, and ask for permission to use them if I can make them not look too bad.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I don't know if they'd do back sprites for things that were finished... a few days ago. This will probably just be more practice. However pointless this kind of practice will probably be.
