So you want to splice the Pokemons?

Recently I've been thinking about ways to coerce more kids into my van, more appropriately named Showcase. The problem being that I couldn't think of a good enough medium to use as an intro, then that new dude started posting Pokemon splices and I remembered that back in '09 there was so much splicing on this forum, it helped to create the foundation for Showcase at the time.

What are Pokemon splices?

Splices are basically the combination or "fusion" of multiple Pokemon to create a new unique Pokemon. All you need to do this is MS Paint (which you already have if you're a windows user) and a .png sprite sheet. That's it.

People on this site already have a massive infatuation with Pokemon, and splicing is easy to learn whilst still being very rewarding and fun to master. Literally anyone could do it.

Cool bruh, so how do I actually do it though?

That's the other reason for this thread, if enough people are interested I'd be willing to make a youtube video tutorial showing you the basics. All of which are incredibly simple to learn, I haven't done this in 6 years but from the little I remember I was able to make the purple/blue splice you see up there (credit to Smear for the first splice).

If a lot of people are interested then I'd be willing to make more advanced tutorials and whatnot, having a splicing club like we did in the olden days would be dope too. It's really all up to you guys. I know if enough people give it a real try they'd really enjoy it.

If you need any help with it, let me and Josh know and I'm sure we'll give you some assistance.

Thanks for putting me on the spot. But yea, I'd be happy to help. Pixel Art/Spriting/Splicing/whatever else is one of my favorite art forms as of late. Since its effectively "less is more" on a grand scale.

Video's up, watch that and you should be good to go, if you have any questions however feel free to ask.

Sprite sheets: http://www.mediafire.com/download/18k2vzzmkm43rgo/spliceroni-2016-03-16+%281%29.zip

It's purposefully organized to be beginner friendly so the number correlates to the generation the pokemon are from (2 = generation 2 for example)

f = front sprites (this is the one I used in the video)

b = back sprites (you don't really need these starting out, it's just for later on)

p = the parts sheet, front and back respectively

If for some reason you don't want to download my compilation you can manually download everything you need from here, do note however that my files are all organized by name, if you manually download everything you'll have to do that yourself.

Good video, almost felt like softcore.

Anyway, behold, my first splice in a long-ass time:

Base Wheezing with Voltorb and Electrode.

Also, an easier way to get rid of the background is to just floodfill it white instead of wiping it with a brush. These sheets are especially useful cause usually if you copy/paste a sprite, the transparent background will come up black and flooding it can snag some of the outline that makes it look clean.

Dope sheet m8, I'm especially a fan of the warts effect you got going there, really cool.

Yeah you definitely can just use the paintbucket and replace the bg with white but the "interlocked" areas of a sprite won't be affected so it's important to keep that in mind.

I really want to see what people come up with, that was literally my only reason for making the video. I have full confidence that you'll thoroughly enjoy making one as well.

Don't be disheartened if your first tries aren't spectacular either, my first splice was assmeat, you'll get better after like 2 or 3, trust me.

Loving it Thar. Little suggestion though? Maybe darken the puffs a little bit, find a pokemon that has a battery like texture to use that for the exits/vents, and grab the appropriate electric styling to show the connections between the Voltorb and Electrode instead (and of course make the rearmost orb a Voltorb too)?

Its got character. Now it needs life.

EDIT: As a word of note, I'm the type that advocates using reference points and building off of a base rather than outright splicing. Which inevitably leads to the sprites being like 75% scratched.

I've been asked to check this out so I'm checking this out.

My nickname for Night is now "The Dope Show"

First of all. Nice voice.

Second of all the transparent thing is something I wish I realized existed a long time ago I'm an idiot.

Seems pretty simple. Only issue is patience and time. But when I get a time I can and I feel up to doing it I'll probably give it a try.

The coloring part looks like the most frustrating for me.

You can manually repaint the colors by using the fill tool. Him using the Eraser tool is more for larger pieces or if you have trouble seeing that last pixel.

In GraphicsGale, this issue is omitted by use of the color-replacement tool and I get a nifty little toy:

miQMLYZ.png?1

Its called the "Loupe" and lets me see small features highlighted without interrupting the canvas itself. For the example I set it to x8 so you and everyone else can see how it's used better, but I usually have it at x16 or x32 zoom so I definitely dont miss a spot. The square with the highlighted edge is where my cursor is on the sprite.

cool sheet nighterino

Someone match me so I actually have to make something

Once everyone's gotten their feet wet I'm gonna start up a "splice of the week" sort of thing, though we'd need to get a better name as that acronym would conflict with the other sotw.

But yeah, someone challenge this funk if only to say that you've beaten catmang at something.
