Archetype Questions #2

Arctic55

Question

What monster effects should be in every deck/new archetype to help the deck flow.  Basically, can you guys help me list all the different chains?  For example:

Special Summon from Hand

SS if certain number of ? cards are in the grave -- Dark Armed Dragon

SS if you banish ? cards from grave -- Lightpulsar Dragon

SS if ? card is destroyed -- Interplanetarypurplythorny Dragon

Negate and SS if ? attacked -- Maiden with Eyes of Blue

SS if you take damage --Tragoedia

SS if opponent has monsters while you don't -- Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit

SS by tribute -- Kiabaman

Special Summon from Deck

Negate and SS if ? attacked -- Maiden with Eyes of Blue

Special Summon from Grave

Negate and SS if ? attacked -- Maiden with Eyes of Blue

SS by destroying hand -- Lightpuslar Dragon

SS because of monster effect -- Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon

Basically, what am I missing?  All the effects I listed are from my blue-eyes deck if your wondering.

You can probably figure why I'm asking, but I'm attempting to develop two new archetypes.  One will have 11 cards, the other... a bunch.  The hardest part for me, is figuring how to get the deck to work together.  This question got better answers than my last one... maybe because I was more clear on what I wanted.  lol

*nom nom nom*  Hey, don't look at me, I'm just eating advice.  Keep it coming.  *nom nom nom*

Special thanks to Sakura Haruno and Dova for the replies.

I have a couple things you could consider for making a deck more usable, though I'm not sure how many of them will actually be useful to you. Also, you should probably keep in mind when reading these that a lot of them will probably sound like ways of speeding up slow decks, mostly because I used some of these to make my own new Archetype cards ("Magician Girl") in order to speed up the slow progression of the Dark Magician Girl deck.

- Have 2-3 monsters who's effects can stop the destruction of integral cards or monsters.

This is important because if you have certain monsters in your deck that are integral to your success, and you can't seem to be able to make your deck less reliant on them, then maybe you should have some way of making them more difficult to destroy. Examples would be support monsters who increase the ATK or DEF of allied monsters of the same Archetype, like how Frequency Magician can be used to increase the ATK of an allied monster by 500; or you could use Quick-Play Spell cards or Trap cards which can negate the destruction of certain monsters, like a custom Counter Trap card I made which negates the destruction of a "Magician Girl" card, though these cards will usually need some restriction on them, like "Only 1 (name of whatever card this is) can be used per turn."

- Have a few cards that facilitate summoning.

This is extremely important, because a lot of the decks that are popular right now can swarm pretty effectively. If you have a lot of higher level monsters in your deck, you can consider using a searcher that let's you ss a monster that's above level 4 or something, either once per turn, or maybe by discarding a card from your hand. You should also consider how your other monsters will make this ss easier to pull off, or how they'll allow you to do so more often, and depending on how easy they make it for you to pull it off/do it more often, then you might have to put some slight restrictions on it to avoid having an OP deck. Another option might be having a field card that simplifies the summoning of higher level monsters, though this kind of field card would usually need some sort negative aspect to its activation or use, like needing to pay 1000 or so LP to place it onto the field, or maybe you have to pay LP every time you ss (or whatever other simplified form of summoning you choose), or you could make it so that its simplified summoning only applies under certain circumstances (usually circumstances that you won't meet more than 65% of the time). The last way you can facilitate summoning is to try and use Pendulum monsters to be able to Pendulum Summon, instantly swarming your opponent. The Card Maker here can't make Pendulums, but if you look around enough, you should find a site or free program that has the ability to make custom Pendulum monsters.

Some things you definitely should have are:

  • A searcher (some Archetypes have more than one; others have none at all, but they have external support cards to do that for them). Generally, 1-2 cards helps with this.
  • Some way to facilitate the summon of your monsters, either SSing from the hand/Deck/Extra Deck or in the case of Monarchs and the like, Tribute Summoning. Again, about 1-2.
  • Obvious Archetype support cards; basically, work with the members to do whatever you need them to do.

As we probably mentioned earlier, it depends on what your Archetype intends to do (and how it's intended to function). Some may require more members that can do the above (and more); others have external support cards so they aren't reliant on Archetypal support as often.

Have a look at Draconus' Multi-Stage Contest to have an idea on how archetype building can work, but to be fair, everyone builds it differently.

My main archetype building plan is as follows:

1. Get a theme for the archetype (e.g. Rank 2 Xyz Spam with banishing your own monsters)

2. Make cards to support that theme (e.g. Level 2 monsters that can either swarm or banish themselves to Xyz later)

3. Make cards to improve consistency (e.g. Make a card that allows me to search Level 2s)

4. Make cards to counter weakness in the archetype (e.g. Rank 2 which gives my Level/Rank 2 monsters a lot of ATK)

5. See if any cards could be combined if they are too simple/complicated (e.g. Level 2 which can search on Summon and a Level 2 which can Xyz using monsters in the banished zone, could be worked into one monster)

Each archetype is so different that searching might not be required, Special Summoning might not be required, or even Swarming might not be required. Just think about what you would like to be able to do with those cards.
