Pokemon Sun & Moon

Guess so, considering this tournament is falling during exam season for a lot of us (I just got through one about two hours ago). Only reason I'd enter is for the Mega Stones, but at this time, I don't need Mawilite/Beedrillite.

(If it were the ones for my Eons and Lopunny / Altaria, then yeah, I'd have more motivation)

For those interested in Bottle Caps and Festival Plaza, I just learned an interesting bit of info. Treasure Hunt ** lotteries are guaranteed to give you a Bottle Cap if you go to it in the first 5 minutes of getting it. So if you VIP two people, one that offers Treasure Hunt * and Treasure Hunt **, you can basically farm Max Revives and Bottle Caps for 150 FC per round.

So I took part in the International Challenge with my Sun story team as I literally had nothing else at the time.

[spoiler=An overview of one of my fights]

Turn 1:

Enemy Decidueye Brave Birbs my Lurantis whilst Enemy Mudsdale Superpowers my Crabominable. Neither of my guys die and they knock out Decidueye/Mudsdale in one hit respectively

Turn 2:

Enemy Tapu Fini and Pangoro kill my pokemon

Turn 3:

My Mudsdale takes quite a bit of damage from Muddy Water whilst Pangoro's Thief reduces my Vikavolt health to about just under half health iirc Tapu Fini falls after EQ and TBolt hit it. (Pangoro has just over half health remaining)

Turn 4:

It's now a 2-on-1 fight and the enemy Pangoro decides to use Entrainment on my Mudsdale. I'm baffled at this point, but I guess the guy was thinking that he had lost once Tapu Fini fell. Pangoro fell that turn.

Now I wait.

So been perusing more Festival Plaza stuff, and I found this.

"Save before getting fortunes from the tents. You can't reload their results, but you can remember which tents give which buff and reload to avoid spending FC on identical or overwritten buffs. This actually doesn't work, as Fortune Tent buffs will only roll over at the 00:00 mark if you actually used the service for the day - so if you get a poor buff, you need to take it so it will get refreshed. On the plus side, this means you can actually "keep" the good buffs and leave them un-used until you choose to activate them, so if you get a Very Good Wonder Trade buff for the day, you can keep it for as many days as you want until you get a Very Good buff from a different tent, then activate both."

Food for thought on how the Fortune Tellers work.

Also, I found this to be interesting.

[spoiler=Changing what facilities you get on level-up]

Facilities are assigned on a random basis every time you level up, or you can buy them from friends. Some facilities, particularly the 5-star ones are pretty expensive (costing 1500 FC) just to get them in your game, and duplicates cost double. However, you can exploit this level up process to keep re-rolling until you get one you want. In particular if you're looking to gather Fortune Telling tents, or get a specific facility then this is easier then levelling up each time, and cheaper than buying one.

The game will try to stop you from savescumming festival plaza too much, but you can get round this when it comes to getting the new facilities on level-up.

In essence, what you need to do is:

~~~
1) Get enough FC to level up Festival Plaza
2) Wait for the announcement (with the confetti) that tells you to come inside.
3) Once this has happened, DO NOT enter the castle. Stay outside.
4) Keep farming FC outside the castle (i.e. do missions, talk to people)
5) Try to get enough FC so that you are close to levelling up again - you want to be 2 or 4 points off levelling up again.
6) Once you are 2 or 4 points off the next level-up, go on to the GTS or Wonder Trade and perform a trade, depending on what your gap is (GTS gives 4 points, WT gives 2 points)
7) Now go offline, quit the plaza, save your game
This is the point you reload from if you don't get your desired result
8) Go inside the castle, Sophocles will give you a new facility. This will ALWAYS be the same. Whether you choose to keep it or not doesn't matter.
9) NOW, talk to the person to the right of you next to the table, they will give you the bonus for doing a trade
10) This now levels up your castle again and Sophocles gives you a new facility.
11) THIS facility is random, and will change every time you reload. If you like it, keep it, otherwise reload and do the process again. It's somewhat tedious but it doesn't take too long.
~~~
In essence, when Sophocles offers you a facility, the game then rolls for the facility you will then get afterwards, so you can simply get two facilities back to back and control the outcome of the second one.

Keep in mind this trick won't work for the "scripted" events or the facility you get following them, i.e Level 20 is guaranteed to always be Sophocles saying you can change your name and 21's facility was rolled at level 19, so it won't change. Only do this trick for levels #2-#8 or past Level 100.

Keep in mind that the higher your plaza level, the better chance of getting the 5-star facilities, so at low levels you should use this to get 1-3 star Fortune Teller tents, then aim for things like Rare Kitchen and 5-star fortune tents when you're at a much higher level and are far more likely to get it.

Legitimately interesting Festival Plaza info. I did not know some of those, although I did know about the 2 star Treasure Hunt = 100% Bottle Cap, but I never bothered exploiting it because I don't NEED Bottle Caps that badly. Heck, I have like 13 Bottle Caps and 3 Gold ones, and my Sun file hasn't even picked up Magearna yet.

I did one match in the competition. Lost, but it was interesting.

Actually, it was only REALLY interesting because we both used a shiny Mimikyu. And he had a solid strategy involving Snorlax with Return, Crunch, Belly Drum, and Recycle, holding a Figy Berry, and his Mimikyu used Psych Up to copy Snorlax's stat changes.

So I finished playing in the competition, using my Sandstorm team including Gigalith and Stoutland. Needless to say, it worked out well and I managed to get 1600+ points at least out of total of 15~ games. Now...how do I redeem my Mega Stones?

Oh? I'm curious what your team was, if you don't mind my asking.

Also, they aren't yet redeemable to my knowledge. It usually takes about a week or so for them to finalize things such as standings and whatnot, and rewards and such are distributed after that. I'd say keep an eye on Serebii or something to know when it's available.

Time to go nuts and finish that SPA-Sweep Bubble Beam Marowak thing I've been laughing about. Sad it cant learn Earth Power though.

Basically, it focuses on Gigalith and Stoutland, since Stoutland has Sand Rush. It's basically a replacement over Tyranitar and Excadrill, but Gigalith and Stoutland offer more tools at hand. Gigalith can outspeed threats like all the Tapus, Garchomp, Kartana, and more, and I hit them all like a truck with Life Orb. I usually get a free OHKO with Ice Fang if they open with Garchomp, Salamence or the like with Return or Wild Charge. Gigalith supports with Wide Guard and is a slow sweeper, also perfect for going against Trick Room teams. Salamence used for its Intimidate and flying ability; it's also a decent special sweeper and with Firium Z can eliminate threats like Kartana under Protect and Celesteela. Gastrodon used also to counter Trick Room teams, is a general stallbreaker with Toxic, and protects Gigalith or other mons from strong water moves with Storm Drain, so I don't have to worry about mons like Gyarados a lot. Marowak and Kartana don't have too much important roles, but they're good physical beaters anyway and are used to pressure or sometimes take hits.

I know I've said it before, but Sun/Moon easily have the best main game of any of the Pokemon games.

I'm still a little iffy on that.

The story was really REALLY good compared to a lot of the other games, but as far as the progression went, I felt like this game was the most artificially restrictive and linear in a while. The islands by design are very non-linear in great contrast to something like Unova but you're so often clearly restricted from going places the game doesn't want you to go, sometimes to an extent where it feels absurd like the woman who wouldn't let you through while her Stoutland was sniffing around and only happened to finish after you'd gone through three entire island trials.

So basically I feel like this was the Skyward Sword of Pokémon.

Also this is just a general thing that I don't think Pokémon can ever really fix, but whatever makes the game less tedious is also alright. But that's also more my own problem because I purposefully battle every trainer in the game on each playthrough.

I think I get what you're talking about. While I can see it and admit some of the travel restrictions were silly, I personally don't find them that bad. Honestly, it a lot of it was like how HMs were used to block paths the developers didn't want you taking until later. Akala Island is the biggest offender, but if I had to pick between the island design being linear or it being open ended with limits placed on where you can travel to I'd rather for latter.

Also, while it would have been cool to be able to challenge the Akala Island challenges in any order that does lead into level balance issues. Gen 1 is the most open ended of the games in terms of what order you can do things, but it comes at the cost of a LOT of the trainer levels all being in the same range for the mid third of the game.

So yeah, the best of the main games. ;3

Protect this smile.

It's so good.

Before the game came out I assumed Gladion was gonna be some jabroni edgelord Silver 2.0, but he's actually the best funking Pokemon character ever.

He's so cute. I hope he comes back. If there's an older Gladion in a future game I'm gonna die.

Also the best Zelda game is Link Between Worlds... though possibly soon to be replaced by Breath of the Wild.

Man, ya'll talkin 'bout the game having artificial roadblocks and stuff and my biggest complaint is that there is nowhere near enough Hawaiian euphemisms.

yes but you're the only one of us who would be capable of noticing that.

Technically you could get to the 7th gym after the 4th gym in Gold/Silver :'D

I think there's ways around that, though. It's harder but you could artificially limit the gyms themselves, or make them change levels depending on how many badges you have– either of which makes sense in the context of the game. It's harder to do it in Pokémon than what they did in Link Between worlds because it's much more RPG focused, but they could do just what Breath of the Wild is doing and just not give a funk if the player goes somewhere where they're clearly underleveled and are going to get bodied.

(You guys remember I live in Hawaiʻi, right? But yeah, Icy's better at picking up on local stuff)

Can confirm.

Only thing I remember is Hau say "aue" pre-Olivia fighting and some guys saying "howzit". They could've very well let more of the characters use pidgin slang, because locals do use more than those two.

I can't confirm how accurate this is nowadays or there's more that isn't noted, but some stuff in Hawaiian: http://www.oocities.org/olelo.geo/v-idioms.html. Some of the stuff in here I hear often like "pilau" (stink/PU), "hana hou", "pau" [quite a bit], "lolo" [this also forms part of the word for marijuana]; rest isn't too much.

(As mentioned above, Icy probably hears a lot of the other stuff not mentioned; I don't because of where I live on this island or go to everyday.)

[Also the issue with the ʻokina and kahako/macron for certain words, but excusing that because of font issues (apostrophe is fine as an alternative). More critical on this because of university/paper writing (you'll notice I wrote Hawaii how it's written here) and the rules on Hawaiian language; the inclusion/exclusion of the ʻokina and kahako yield different words [think I wrote something about this pre-release]; for now, Sun/Moon can get away with it.]

Also disappointed in lack of rubber slippers as a clothing option.

But local culture stuff aside, my general gripe is still the lack of a strong enough trainer base postgame coupled with the split EXP formula. Split EXP formula is tolerable in Gen 5 because they have a tough enough E4 and the White Treehollow/Black Tower for training to make up for it; Sun/Moon don't have this and cap at level 63 most of the time for the E4 (bar Kukui, who isn't much stronger; albeit with full team); suppose it's helpful when stuff isn't really up to par yet so I don't get creamed, but yeah. That, and the Lucky Egg farming (affection helps, but would've been nice to be able to get more Lucky Eggs).

Should probably stock up on Rare Kitchens and stuff if I get more of them via level up (I haven't checked if my VIPs/guests have them available lately).

Guess I have a reason to start challenging the Tree again; hopefully my 'mons are tough enough (even with importing / long hours of breeding for HA/IVs). Royale gives no matter what, even though it's somewhat haxed after a while.

Let's see how this goes, because I do need to unlock the Super Battles.

Oh... my god you're right. There is loads of places they could have injected those words.

ESPECIALLY "hana hou" given how apt of a word it is for pokemon battling. Hana hou, meaning to state or ask for an encore/go again, would fit quite a lot in the pokemon world.

Also calling someone "lolo" (crazy) would also apply a lot for conversational use outside of pokemon battling.

"Aue" (oh no...) could easily have been used for a number of after battle quotes since its a kind of grunt/exasperation.

"Ho" (Wow!/etc) could be used for any number of female trainers (male too but it'd be nicer on the censors) but its similarities to an english vulgarity would make Nintendo disagree.

Personally "HUI!" (to call someone from a distance) is one I use on a regular basis if I'm being loud... yea, so not so common but still.

"Pau" (done) could have certainly been used more since its just a direct translation of a common thing people say turned into a sort of grunt.

And thats without getting into the actual cultural stuff...

EDIT1: It helps to think of using individual hawaiian phrases/words as "feelings of... [translation]" since they're pretty broad in meaning. Very few are specific enough for direct translations.

Details of the next Battle Competition have been announced. This is the Kanto X Alola Regional Rumble competition. This is a Single Battle competition with standard rules requiring the Kanto & Alola Pokédex only. Mewtwo, Mew, Zygarde, Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, and Magearna cannot be used.. Mega Stones are also not allowed. Registration will be open from March 9th at 00:00 UTC to March 16th 23:59 UTC and battles will run from March 17th through March 19th. All entrants will get the Pidgeotite and Steelixite Mega Stones.

Also the best Zelda game is Link Between Worlds... though possibly soon to be replaced by Breath of the Wild.

True, though I'll be avoiding spoilers for that for as long as I can.
