Let's see...

Gen 1:

Bulbasaur is adorable, easily one of my favorite starters.

Charmander's fine, but he's really overrated.

Squirtle and Wartortle are awesome, but I'm not fond of Blastoise. So... Neutral?

Gen 2:

Chikorita is cuuuuuuuute

Cyndaquil is cuteeeeeeeeer

Totodile's not bad, either.

Gen 3:

I love the Treecko line in general.

I like Torchic, but I'm not fond of Blaziken.

I like Mudkip, but not fond of Swampert. More love for Mudkip tan Torchic, but less for Swampert.

Gen 4:

Turtwig line is amazing.

Chimchar line is great.

Piplup is cute, but... despite being my first pick for Gen 4, not too fond.

Gen 5:

Snivy line is my favorite this gen.

Tepig is cute, though I'm not very fond of Emboar. I do like the line, though.

Oshawott is boring.

Gen 6:

Chespin is okay.

Fennekin is adorable, but Delphox lets it down a little.

Froakie's okay, but Greninja's awesome.

Um... IDK?

I think that it's probably gen 2, looking at it, though 4 and 6 aren't far off.

Really guys? Infernape is on funking FIRE...CHARIZARD IS A DRAGON THAT GOES BLACK and comes back

And charizard is generic af imo, what's your point?

We are allowed to like different things.

Infernape is really awesome in the anime aswell, best pokemon backstory and is generally really awesome to see fighting, it also has pretty unique design.

Charizard is also on fire -.-

Gotta agree here.

"How dare you like a burning monkey when there's a funking dragon"

that's like as generic as it gets

I mean, I DO like both Mega Charizards, but there's still flaws with the base's design.

Design-wise, Oshawott has been wholly the most interesting starter I have ever seen. I love the use of the Scalchops, especially seeing it in the anime. It's Snivy that while I get, I never found all that interesting.

But, to reiterate, in greater detail (for some reason), my answer in a recent status with this topic, my answer would be gen 3.

  • Has been all around my favorite set for a long while
  • Blaziken is my favourite Pokemon (probably had something to do with the early showing of A FULLY EVOLVED STARTER, now that I think about it)
  • It's whole line is in my top 20 (from when there was a "Your Top X Favourite Pokemon" thread)
  • Sceptile and Grovyle are in there too
  • I do love how early Treeko learned Absorb. When I felt the need to grind early on it would save me from continually visiting Pokemon Centers.
  • Mudkip is my second fav, though I only picked 'cuz I seem to consider it the most adorbs (has nothing to do with the meme)

Each generation, in order:

1- All generally kinda solid, although Bulbasaur loses points for its typing. Still, the starters as a whole receive an 8/10.

2- Cyndaquil is meh, just the Charmander line's stats minus the Flying type. Totodile is also meh, and doesn't improve as it evolves. Chikorita is the worst starter we've ever had, and I've trained one. 5/10.

3- Torchic to Blaziken is solid, no real complaints. Mudkip to Swampert is seven different kinds of fun. Treecko to Sceptile is my favorite Grass Starter in the series. 9/10.

4- Chimchar is the Cyndaquil problem again, compounded by the two having the same typing as well, and Chimchar's line having a less developed movepool. Piplup is overrated because penguins, and honestly doesn't stand out much. I can't even put the Steel typing in its favor, because that gives it a weakness to both other starters simultaneously. Turtwig isn't that bad a Grass line, actually, but isn't spectacular either. 6/10.

5- Tepig is more garbage than Garbodor. Oshawott is . . . meh given form. Snivy is just bad. 4/10.

6- Fennekin is pretty great, and the Fire/Psychic typing is just fun in general. Froakie to Greninja exemplifies the reason I like the lines of Charizard and Sceptile: I'M SPEED! Chespin to Chesnaught is decent, but if you want a Grass/Fighting Pokémon you should stick with Breloom. 8/10.

WINNER: Hoenn and Gen 3.

In terms of design, Gen 4 or 5. Emboar is a bit whatever, but Serperior and Samurott are two of my favorite starter designs. Gen 4 has torterra, which automatically makes it good, but Infernape and Empoleon are both pretty cool too.

In therms of battle competency...Gen 1 or 3. Gen 3 has Blaziken, but Sceptile's a bit...whatever, but Swampert's definitely good, especially in doubles. Gen 1 is a bit more solid overall, but none of them are overly powerful. CHar X is good, and Y is great in doubles, but the rest are a bit below most other OU megas, and blastoise is worse than sceptile, IMO.

Gen 6. I adore all of the final evolutions for the starters, as well as their base forms. Least memorable middle forms though imo

I actually really like Braixen's design.

2- Cyndaquil is meh, just the Charmander line's stats minus the Flying type. Totodile is also meh, and doesn't improve as it evolves. Chikorita is the worst starter we've ever had, and I've trained one. 5/10.

Gatr is actually REALLY good. Sheer Force is an insane ability.

Anyway, how I'd rank the various starters right now. The general placements for the top and bottom would stay the same most times I make this, but the middle depends on how I'm feeling at any given time.

S tier

Charizard

Blaizken

Greninja

A tier

Serperior

Infernape

Delphox

Sceptile

B tier

Empoleon

Chesnaught

Torterra

Feraligatr

Samurott

Swampert

C tier

Blastoise

Emboar

Venusaur

Typhlosion

D tier

Meganium

The major take away from that is I really don't care for the gen 1, 2, and 5 starters as a whole. The Gen 2 starters are EASILY my least favorite though. I think as a group I'd say 4 or 6 are my favorite.

I like different mons from different gens so let's see...

My favorite first stage from Gen 1 was Bulbasaur. Second stage, Wartortle. Third stage Venusaur.

Gen 2, first stage Totodile, second stage Bayleaf, third stage Meganium. (Funnily enough I don't like Chikorita)

Gen 3, first stage Mudkip, second stage Grovyle, third stage Swampert

Gen 4, first stage Piplup, second stage Grotle, third stage Torterra

Gen 5, first stage Snivy, second stage Dewott, third stage Serperior. Though I like the first/third stage of Tepig more than Oshawatt's

Gen 6, first stage Chespin, second stage Braxien, don't super love the final evos but probably Chesnaught

My all time favorite first stage is Snivy or Bulbasaur. My favorite second stage is Braxien, and favorite final is Venusaur.

So it would seem it'd be Gen 1, but I don't particularly like the Charmander line over others, or the Squirtle besides Wartortle.

Gen 2 all around had solid ones for me. Gen 3 probably the weakest, Gen 4 were good but none stood out for me, Gen 5 all but Oshawott, Pignite, and Samurott I like a lot. Gen 6 I love all the starters, all the mid-stage besides Chespin's, and all the final are okay.

I think either 2 or 5 would be my favorite. But because of Samurott gonna say the Johto starters are my favorite all around. Despite Bulbasaur being my favorite starter.

Good ol' Bulby is the best. Just the best. So naturally Gen 1 receives my vote.

That said, unexpectedly, Gen 2 has a lot of votes. I thought those 3 guys weren't very popular.

I thought so as well, so this is a pleasant surprise.

Of course, it could be similar to mine. None of them are my absolute favorites but their designs and such are solid enough that all together they are the best.

Gen 1

Grass - Bulbasaur is funking adorable as sheet. One of my favorite starters easily. I love Ivysaur and Venasaur too, just a big fan of them.

Fire - Eeeeeh... Cute and all, Charmander. Charmeleon is really kinda bland, not a big fan of it. Charizard is cool and all, some good r34 obv, but really overrated.

Water - Squirtle is adorable, and I'm just not a huge fan of the later two evolutions.

Gen 2

Grass - I don't give a flying funk what ANYONE says, Chikorita is my baby. And so is Bayleef. And so is Meganium. These little shits are adorable as funking hell and I love my grass dinos. <3

Fire - funking LOVE Cyndaquil. It's funking adorable. Quilava is kinda bland, I won't argue that, but unlike Charmeleon, it's cute! Typhlosion is funking awesome, and I love it. I love to imagine the neck of fire angling downwards to give it a cape, funk yeaaaa.

Water - Totodile is adorable, Croconaw has a pretty cool design, and Feraligatr is honestly pretty good. Just lots of love for this line.

Lots of love for all of these lines, which isn't something the rest of the generations have going for them, so this is my favorite gen of starts.

Gen 3

Grass - The... Treeko line was kinda bland in Gen 3 considering it was the only single typed starter in that gen, but they got better. I always liked them, but I was never really able to give any particularly good reasons. Nowadays, I still can't give a particularly good reason, I just DO. Treeko is a sassy little sheet though, look at it. Grovyle is probably my favorite second Stage starter out of any of them though, thanks to the second Mystery Dungeon games.

Fire - Probably my... Faaavorite out of this gen? Hard to say, honestly. Like it more than Mudkip, and about the same as Treeko's. Not much to say about it, Blaziken is badass, Torchic is adorable, Combusken... Is weird.

Water - Least favorite. I don't like Marshtomp at all, Swampert is... Funky. Not bad, just funky. Mudkip is cute. Generally pass them up for one of the other two though.

Gen 4

FEEL LIKE I'M GONNA GET FLAK FOR THIS ONE

Grass - Love them. Turtwig and Grotle are both pretty cute, and Torterra... It's a funking giant ass turtle. Badass and I love it.

Fire - Hate it. I don't care for Chimchar, though it is cute. I HATE Monferno, I don't think the design is good, I think it's just ugly. Infernape is less ugly, but still not the kind of thing I like.

Water - Love my derpy little penguin. Not a huuuge fan of Prinplup, but Empoleon? funk yeah, Steel / Water! I love the third stage of this set, really do.

Gen 5

Grass - Yeah, I love the Snivy line. I love the landsnake, I love it in game, I love it in competitive, I just love it. Snivy is adorable, Serperior is funking awesome, Servine... Exists.

Fire - Meh. Tepig is cute, the other two are ugly. Don't care for them at all. Not bad in game, just not a fan of the design.

Water - Unlike Josh, I really like Oshawott's line. Not Oshawott itself, but Dewott and Samurott is... Pretty damn cool.

Gen 6

Grass - funking... I don't even know. I feel like this line suffers from Tepig syndrome, nice first stage, but really... Ugly second and third stage designs. Fun to use in game though.

Fire - Love it. I love all three stages. I don't care what people say about Delphox, it might not have been what was expected, but it's perfectly fine.

Water - Pretty damn cool. Froakie is adorable, Greninja is cool. Second stage sickness of not standing out though.
