Here's their attempt to clear things up:

UPDATE: GO TO FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/FineBros/posts/10153850492114522 - Reddit is only letting us reply one post every 10 minutes not sure why, trying to fix, will reply here and there. Sorry for the confusion. Due to this, we have been answering questions over there. And will try to get to people over there as we can.

Benny & Rafi Fine here to clear the confusion and answer your questions - please reply to this thread and we will be answering throughout the day. Please see below to clarify what React World is.

1: We do not hold a copyright on reaction videos overall. No one can. It isn’t something you can copyright.

2: We are not going after/shutting down/sueing anyone who makes reaction based content. We are licensing our specific shows and their structural elements.

3: On the confusion around what we mean by our “format” we do NOT mean “people reacting to videos” we mean the structural elements of the FBE series. Most series have protectable elements, which is why you see multiple shows across entertainment that have the same idea, but a different presentation. The FBE series (Such as “Kids React”, “Lyric Breakdown”, & “Do They Know It?" also have trademarks in terms of their title, and elements like their title cards, timing, graphical elements, etc. which is what you are licensing in terms of what we mean by “format”.

4: We don’t like to make parallels to TV but think of it like this. You have a TV network in another country and want to make a singing show. You can make a brand new format on your own and come up with every aspect of that series and hope it works out (and it might do great) or you can pay to license an established brand (like an “American Idol”) and make a your version which could increase your chances of success as well as give you the tools to produce the series efficiently.

To us, this is a way to connect with our viewers and allow people to make their own version of a show they love to watch. Again we’ll be replying in this thread if there are further questions.

So in summary, TheFineBros Youtube channel felt like their wallets were not filled to the brim enough with Youtube revenue, so they decided to mark "React" under their own terms and claiming any other videos showing similar content will be taken down as it is a copyright infringement. And so far, they have gone full censorship mode, already deleting criticizing comments on their Youtube video comment section. If they succeed, they would be able to look through and take down any "React" video that infringes their guidelines unless these react videos have a sort of conjunction with TheFineBros and revenue is accumulated through those partners with shitty and pointless purchases.

I have watched TheFineBros videos for a bit at one point and only watched a few of their videos every few months, and I never liked their style of how unoriginal they are when it came to getting a demographic and get them to watch videos and post reactions. And now, they're treating it as if this whole react thing is theirs, similar to a TV network or as what they compare it to be. It is so incredulous that they try to speak in a language and tone to try to convince this is GOOD for the community. Bull funking sheet. Bullying any other minor video under a copyright of a word is the most preposterous thing I have seen, and frankly, they plan to use this with Google and Youtube to cut down all that are not licensed by their name.

Next thing we know, all unboxing videos would be charged or dismantled next.

I thought they already did, there have been several copyright flagging by them in the past. I don't know if they should be able to, its like lets players copyrighting their content.

Even if they have been, this is the point where they are almost about to breakthrough; it's just that now, it's going to be based on what the public thinks before further judgment is made upon. It's not like TheFineBros needed extra money anyway, but they're turning into a manipulative company who uses their ludicrous foundation to monopolize a good number of videos. Of course they shouldn't.

The worst thing about the video is the fuckmuppets in the comments who seem to think this is opening up previously unavailable avenues to them. As if before this announcement, reaction videos in their countries simply weren't possible. What the hell. Though they have now been hugely overwhelmed which is good.

Well most of them are oblivious as funk and don't know the true consequences. Of course, it's mostly due in part due to the video's language and tone. But the fact that they had been actively deleting comments in their video that criticize them just shows how despicable they are for not letting any logical criticism bypass.

That's a thing as well, they phrased it and framed it in such a way as to obfuscate what they're actually doing, which is extra cuntish because it intentionally deceived people.

This is their supposed "apology" to the viewers...which frankly does not change anything. They are practically dodging the main issue...claiming we never fully understood because they said so, blamed it on the "wording". Yet they never go into detail what really constitutes as a "react" format. They could have done a more genuine and sympathetic apology where they could have accepted some criticism and lied a little, but it's still insincere, robotically generated language that doesn't change their scheme, and they're only being more impatient more people aren't falling into their heinous machinations. Already their oblivious fan base has already attacked people like Ellen.

So, copyrighting crap?

This is incorrect, they are attempting to TRADEMARK it. While the two terms are used interchangeably in normal speech, they are two very different things and allows TFB to say things like "You can't copyright formats", which is technically true but dodges the issue. It's an important distinction to make.

Anyway, I've lost all respect for these guys after this. They're scrambling for damage control at this point, and it's kind of sad.

https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/43e6a9/link_inside_in_2014_the_fine_bros_told_its/czhjcksThis is a pretty good post on Reddit that pretty much tears the whole thing a new one.

They've set up a format for their REACT videos. They're not trying to copyright Reaction videos in general, just the specific format that they've worked had to create over the years. They want to make a business out of this, which is completely acceptable. They've built all of this from nothing and then they want to make sure nobody steals the format they use for their videos. Completely logical and people are just whining and jabroniing about something regular businesses do every day. Remember that time Bethesda tried to sue Mojang for their use of the word Scrolls? Sure some people thought it was dumb but not as nearly as many people thought that compared to this. The REACT format deserves to have more copyright than a word and no one seems to realise it's a completely normal, completely fair thing to do on their behalf. Jesus, it's like some people forget that this is the real world sometimes.

Define their format. Because they've been EXTREMELY vague about what exactly their "React" format is, even though HUNDREDS of people have asked them that question.

It's pretty obvious. Basically just what they do in their videos.

Title card -> Introducing people one at a time -> On to video watching swapping between people as each make a comment -> Question time -> Random Facts popping in between random intervals -> End card

Obviously not that exactly but the gist is there.

Here's how they are defining their format in their official Trademark/Service Mark Application.

Entertainment services, namely, an on-going series of website programs in the field of observing and interviewing various groups of people

Do you see how vague that is? THAT is what they are trying to trademark. That lets them control a large chunk of YouTube with that "format".

They claimed that this was stealing/infringing their format. They seem to have this idea that they invented reacting. Fuck sake like, they want to trademark "try not to laugh", which far predates their existence. They've backed themselves into an indefensible position.

They shouldn't be allowed to do this. By licensing their "format" they are licensing content that they don't own and that is already licensed. They are gonna get flagged as well, the irony. They've already been taking down Channels, most of which have few subscribers and aren't monetizing. If they start licensing the word "React" they are gonna end up in the same boat as Sony when they tried to license the word "lets play".

This just in: TheFineBros have now admitted their faults in doing the copyright business and is now discontinuing React World. Well, it did not take long, but at least they apologized now instead of later. It's still a big hit to their public reputation, and I can imagine them or other companies submitting to the same kind of greed.

Felt like everyone and their mother was ranting about this in my twitter feed for the past few days, although that'll happen when you mostly follow Youtubers.

Hopefully the Fine Bros learned their lesson here. I used to watch some Teens React a couple years ago and I think it's fine that they went on to get bigger and expand their brand, but this was not the way to go about it.

When I talked about this video with my friend, my only response was, "Well, that's one way to screw over your YouTube channel." If I recall correctly, they took the video down. Also, due to that video they lost around a million subscribers, I think. Honestly, they weren't even the first channel to do reactions and they're not the best either. I prefer Pyrocinical because he doesn't just copy and paste the video in the bottom corner of the screen and "react" to the video in such a cliche and unentertaining manner. Oh, and HE ACTUALLY TALKS ABOUT THE VIDEO AND GIVES HIS OPINIONS ON IT. The Fine Bros.'s reactors hardly do any of this; the questions they ask their reactors are typically very generic, like, "Have you heard of this series prior to watching this video?" Anyway, the Fine Bros. lost any respect I had for them. Their proposition is ridiculous and it goes to shows that they only care about money.
