Don't drink, don't want to drink, don't want to buy alcohol, etc.

This

My friend think I'm crazy.

Thank you for your valuable contribution to this thread.

Got my dad a killer bottle of scotch.  Single barrel, cask strength (53.5%), only 500 made, westcoast s*** right there. Haven't actually tried it yet but I hope to

Which distillery?

I've honestly never heard of that. What's it taste like?

The way I remember it was that the coke overpowered the taste of the wine, pretty much like any other basic coke + spirit cocktails. Had some in when I was in Spain some 2-3 years ago. I didn't enjoy it myself, but I wasn't a regular drinker at that time, so my experience can't say much for me now (might actually enjoy it now).

The name of the drink in question, from Wikipedia, is Kalimotxo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalimotxo

Also I'm basic as hell. I usually go for any rum + coke cocktail usually if I'm drinking out. At home, softer stuff like beer, long drink, etc. (pretty much non-spirits).

I'm a university student and basically drink what I can get my hands on but just plain old Smirnoff is probably my drink of choice, ideally with lemonade. I'm also very fond of Archer's, which is a Peach Schnapps that I'm not sure exists outside the UK that goes well with literally any mixer and is even pretty decent to drink straight. I don't really have any sort of palate for beer but I avoid all mass-produced beers because they're disgusting, I do drink local beers now and again if I'm in a pub or somewhere but I'm not particularly good at distinguishing between local beers, I just know the difference between a good beer and a bad one. Never had Grey Goose but I'd love to sometime, there's definitely a difference between really crappy Vodkas and Smirnoff so I imagine there'd be an even bigger difference between that and Grey Goose.

A local club also does these things called "blue pints" which is 3 shots of Russian Standard with some bright blue mixer which nobody actually knows (I suspect maybe Blue Mountain Dew? Or maybe just WKD) for £2.40 which is as about cheap as you'll get booze in any club in the UK, so that's definitely something I've become familiar with.

Also Jagerbombs are disgusting.

I'm not huge on spirits. I'm not the 'go out and get hammered' type. That does usually resign me to looking after whichever poor soul that I call my friend for the night at parties, but that's cool. This is the UK, of course, where 18 year-olds get the green light for drinking, but we still have a huge underage drinking culture. Our perpetual alcoholism is hilarious.

Cider's cool though.

What have you had, what did you like or not like about each thing? We can give you recommendations if you can describe the particular elements that appeal to you (or don't).

I'm not a fan of gin: it's its herbiness that gets to me. Vodka's fine just because it's pretty neutral. If I had to drink on a night out, vodka and lemonade is the way to go for me. I've not really delved deep into other spirits that much since I basically don't drink, but it probably gets stronger from whiskey on out.

I will repeat that gin and tonic with fresh lime is a must before you discount gin - if you still don't like it, fair play.

Vodka is overhyped and better replaced by white rum, IMO - it's warmer with less of an afterburn.

White? Dark? Spiced? Different rums for different purposes - keep that in mind! :)

Gold and dark rums are probably the commonplace with my friends. With my squeamishness towards spirits, it's just mixed drinks for me, so I figure white rum is the way to go.

There is nothing wrong with mixed drinks, and don't let people tell you otherwise. Study some mixology, make great drinks for your friends, and they'll shut up.
