question about card counter limit

MarkKetron

Question

So when it comes to placing counters on monster cards. Is there a specific limit per rank/monster/spell. The most common I have seen is Max 3 for 4 star and lower and max 5 for 5 stars and up. and I have see 7 counters for continuous spells but i want to know if there are actual limits according to TCG standards and what they are. This is a question someone else has for me. He has a deck that is based around card counters and is looking to balance it, which I for sure informed him a spell card giving all your monsters 5 counters is not balance. But any answers to the limit would be appreciated.

Ah, I think he's instead looking for standards to measure against the average number of counters a monster would enter with, without any external help.

In this regard, there is very little you can measure against. Many monsters that gain counters on Summon usually get 1, maybe 2 if you're lucky. If you intend to see a single card get more counters than that, usually it's tied to the board state, like the number of cards on the field, or the Level(s) of 1 or more other monsters.

You can, however, for each member of the archetype, set limits to the number of relevant counters they can have.

It'll make it easier for us if you can provide us the card(s) in question.

If it's an instant 5 counters to ALL cards, then yeah that's pushing it. If it's divided amongst whatever, then it might be fine.

As already mentioned, there aren't any upper limits for how many counters can be on a particular monster/card, except if it's absolutely stated in the card text.

Of course, the instant 5 counters depends on what kinds of counters they are, and what they are used for. If your cards require a lot of counters to activate, then 5 counters might not be so bad, but if you use counters which have already been done (e.g. Spell Counters) then putting on 5 counters would be too much, considering that most card's only need one Spell Counter.

Some cards have a limit on how many counters they have on them, i.e. "You can place 1 Spell Counter this card (max. 1)", however, there are two things to take note.

First off, a monster with that said effect can have a Spell Counter AND a Guard Counter on it. There is no limit on how many different counters you can have on it, and the limitation only affects Spell Counters. You cannot remove a Guard Counter to activate an effect which requires you to move a Spell Counter. The two are different, but not mutually exclusive. And remember there are counters other than Guard Counters and Spell Counters. I just used a Guard Counter as an example.

The other thing to remember is that if it does not state a limitation, THERE IS NO LIMIT to the number of counters you can put on a card. An example of this is "Magical City of Endymion" I've seen 25 Spell Counters on that thing.

I pretty much thought the same thing as what you guys have said. My friend wants to know because he has been told his method of gaining counters in his deck is a little overpowered since one spell card he has gives insta 5 counters on all his cards within the same archetype on the field. So he mainly wanted to know about the limits if there were any or not and if that many counters on all cards on the field of the same archetype was over the top.
