Decks you recommend to new players

Recommended Posts

When you suggest a deck for a new player to try out as their first deck, what do you usually recommend? As for me:

1) Dark World-Something not too complex but not too easy. It also teaches the difference between an effect and a cost and the difference between "sent to the graveyard" and "discarded". Grapha makes this archetype stable enough to go against a few decks being able to loop it for a 3000(2700) beater.

2) Harpie-Another deck that's not too complex but not too simple. It makes effective use of XYZ monsters, so it teaches how these monsters can really affect the tide of the duel. They can also be incredibly stable being able to swarm from the graveyard quickly for fast rank 4 plays. It's also my favorite deck.

3) Blue-Eyes-Most new players are migrating from the anime, so what better way to get them in than a Kaiba deck? Not only will it feel familiar, but with the support Blue-Eyes and dragons in general got, it can open up a whole new world of ideas to the new player.

So, what about you?

Hmm... I don't really recommend decks, but I would suggest Tellarknights. They may not be among the best decks, but they aren't too casual either so the player can get a closer feeling of the stronger decks, while the effects should be easy to understand and their playstyle is rather simple as well: loop Deneb with Altair, Set whatever backrow you draw into, and try to go for Triverr when things get tough for you. Needless to say, that's putting it simple and there is more than that, but overall they should be easy to play to get started.

That, or perhaps even Kozmos for a more competitive deck. Understanding that the Kozmo pilots can be chained to effects to dodge cards and drop a beater spaceship in the process may or may not be difficult at first, but once the player realizes this, the deck should be relatively easy to play: get the Field and Farmgirl as soon as possible, fix hands and recover banished Kozmos with the field, drop a big spaceship, float into lesser spaceships until you run into the pilots and repeat.

Of course, if it's for IRL, then it will be complicated and/or expensive to assemble a Kozmo deck.

Dark World is a poor choice, I think. It's one of those decks that makes you feel very skilled and competent but actually requires minimal ability to pilot. Tellars, much as I despise the deck, probably is a good choice, though I taught a few players with Battlin Boxers, as it can teach them Xyz, Synchro through Masked Chameleon, how to spread their resources, all wraped in a durable package, though that was before the likes of Castel became super popular.

Pre Nov.9 the go-to beginner's deck would probably be Tellarknight. Easy to pick up, easy to learn (not necessarily master), and is really very good.

Yeah, agreed. HERO are a good pick as well for similar reasons.

Also Evilswarm, though they require a liiittle more knowledge to begin to pilot and don't teach you AS much as either of the above.

Based on the deck itself, and not extraneous factors, I'd throw 'em in the ring with Shaddolls. Learn the chain links, utilizes all 3 ED monster types, and with so many variants there's still some creativity left to the deck builder. I'd also note, playing without backrow is a serious learning experience, was for me at least, and judging by the decks a lot of new players make, I think that's a necessary lesson

Tellars and U.A.

I'd been trying (and mostly failing) teaching my brothers about some of the finer points of the game, but it was difficult without a good window.

U.A. was good because it was inexpensive and it did not need an extra deck to function. It also explained "consistency" (which it lacked at the time) and was an excellent way to explain the the differences between aggro vs control.

Tellars were already discussed above, but for my brothers specifically, it introduced the concept of "speed", something that might be hard to pick up if 90% the cards you've owned were from random packs. >_<

I'm trying to teach my mum Yugioh. She thinks that she wouldn't be good at it because when me and my brother talk about it, it sounds like gobbledygook to her. Because of her lack of confidence, I want something that is easy to use, with no vulgar artworks, because she is scared of Pot of Greed and the like. Preferably rather cheap, because I want to be able to trade for deck components easily, but containing a few foil cards would be nice, because whenever I show her cards, she really likes the shiny.

Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

How about Madolche?

Hmm.. I'll keep it in mind, but I'm not sure if she would like the disproportionate bodies art style. To be honest, I'm thinking of putting it off 'til Burgesstomas hit the TCG because I'll definitely be getting all of them (I even have a deck set up already, waiting for them), and I think she likes the artworks, but I'll have to check, also, they seem fairly complicated to use. What do you (or others) think?

EDIT: Also, does anyone know when Burgesstomas will be coming to the TCG, because I don't want to put off teaching my mum for too long. ;_;

Well...let me think.

She might like Gadgets, seeing how simple and surprisingly cute they are.

Why not show her some pictures of the Gadgets and see what she thinks?

I don't have any Wind-Ups except Juggler and the sucky Warrior type one, but I have a few gadgets left from the Geargia Struckture Deck. :] I'll see what she thinks.

What does she think of the Egyptian Gods?

Are they not somewhat expensive/difficult to get hold of? I traded my Slifer+Barkion+something else for an original print DMoC

Machina Gadget is extremely easy to understand and has a very flowchart playstyle. Good for a beginner.

Darn I wish I had a Machina Fortress so badly, but no-one at my club has one up for trade.

I'm going to show her a load of cards and see what she likes/ whether she wants to learn Yugioh at all. Bye

I meant the artwork, but no they are not. All you have to do is get Mound of the Bound Creator, 3 tributes, and a God in hand. It's also good to make sure that one of those tributes is Hard Armed Dragon.
