Guardsman Sly Marbo
So today I was sat in maths, doing the bane of all GCSE students (surds and standard form D:) and my teacher mispelled a word on the board, and when someone pointed it out she said "Oh yes I'm autistic like that sometimes,". What really got me was the fact you cannot be autistic sometimes, you are either on the spectrum or you are not, there is no sometimes you dozy cow. When I pointed her erroneous terminology out she said "I fail to see how that is relevant" to which I replied;"There is no sometimes with autism, it's a constant thing, you are born with it and it sticks with you for your whole life, and autism actually isn't a disability, It's a label for being different. It's a label that gets misunderstood and misinterpreted by thousands of people and you of all people, who should be trained in dealing with these disabilities, have the guts to blame your on-and-off autism for your crappy English skills?" I was basically funking discriminated in my own school by a teacher. I'm sick of this. So, ask me questions about autism if you want things cleared up, because I have to deal with it in my own head. Let me also say that I was diagnosed age 3, so I've known for nearly my whole life.

Guardsman Sly Marbo
Autism is a term used to describe a person with a specific set of characteristics which are normally to do with social skills. It is possible to work around these to the point of being barely noticeable. People affected tend not to enjoy competetive team sport as it may make them feel as though they are letting the side down, they tend to have confidence issues and trust mainly only their close family. Autism can be worked around and I have managed this. Just to clarify: Not a learning disability, it's a social one.

Just Crouton
I was diagnosed with Asperger's. Asperger's is no longer considered a real condition. Am I cured? Likely not. You'd probably be re-diagnosed with autism.

Miror B
I mean, I say I'm OCD sometimes and I've never had anyone get mad at me for that. Is there really anything wrong with this as a joke?
.Rai
I mean, I say I'm OCD sometimes and I've never had anyone get mad at me for that. Is there really anything wrong with this as a joke? I imagine that if you met someone with OCD, they might not be best pleased if you start doing the typical "Damn, I just have to a clean bedroom. I'm so OCD." I'm probably guilty of it myself, but it's insensitive enough to some other people that there's no reason to use it in that way.

I get that we can't brush all of these conditions off, but all of this happening makes me feel like we're just losing our sense of humor.

I get that we can't brush all of these conditions off, but all of this happening makes me feel like we're just losing our sense of humor. I mean, your situation is basically the same. Everyone has compulsive behaviours. Generalising it with OCD is just...odd? I don't feel great about saying something like "Oh, that's retarded" or, indeed, in OP's example, something like "I'm being so autistic." It's slightly uncomfortable to hear mental disorders being made so casual like that. There's no humour in something like your statement. Just mild misappropriation. I don't mind humour in these sort of things at all. In fact, I encourage it. A person who can make light of the struggles in their life is a totally solid person! But humour is not the same as expecting every person to be comfortable at what I personally think is an obviously uncomfortable statement. There's probably various people with OCD who don't mind people using OCD as a phrase casually at all, but you gotta know them.

Also as to "losing our sense of humor" idk about you but what's funny about "I just have to organize my pens according to color I'm soooo OCD" "That's so retarded" and the example given...like where's the joke? What's the funny? It isn't clever or anything.
(GigaDrillBreaker)
As a similar case, I can confirm that people saying they are bipolar because they can't decide on stuff is insensitive as funk.
Ryusei the Morning Star
It's awful to say, and I'm guilty of it too. Something about the Internet culture makes us(me) feel it's ok to use "Retarded" "Autistic" "Cancer" or "AIDS" to describe thing that have no meaning being described in that manner. I'm sorry she made you feel like that, and I hope that we can all slowly move away from this casual usage of such words

Dova
Asperger's is no longer considered a real condition. Not entirely true, it has just been folded up into Autism itself. So now Asberger's is just mild Autism. I know this because I am also "mildly Autistic".

Guardsman Sly Marbo
Last week we finished our Science ISA (Off-timetable for 2 days, miss maths) and our teacher sets homework due first lesson back during this 2 day period which was on the school website, something NO STUDENT LOOKS AT. Do your job and tell us in person.
