Sexist Selfies and Baseball

I didn't watch the video, but I remember the mild controversy that stirred up from the incident in question.

Do I think selfies are stupid? Not necessarily. I think if it's done in excess, then they'd be highly vain and narcissistic. But that could be said for a lot of things, not just selfies.

I don't think the announcers should be branded as sexist, I thought their commentary was pretty funny and on-point considering all those girls weren't watching the game, which is what they were there for. It's one thing to do it for a little bit and going back to watch, those girls were all doing that for an extended period of time.

I personally don't like taking selfies, but I won't really hold it against anyone if they do. Moderation's always a good habit, though.

EDIT: Probably should have rewatched the video before commenting.

HOLY funking sheet

PEOPLE TAKE PICTURES OF THEMSELVES

HOW DARE THEY

That's my sarcastic opinion on selfies.

As for the sexism thing, it's not a conspiracy.  We don't hold secret white guy meetings on how to oppress women.  It's just not the case.  Get over yourself.

Anybody who thinks selfies are making us narcissistic can go ask our ancestors who had pictures painted of themselves, but whatever. Either way the announcers were acting like bastards. Like what those girls do at a baseball game is their own business, and while it's one thing to make a couple jokes these guys spent several minutes (yes, several minutes I saw this when it first happened I was watching the game) it's an entirely different topic to embarrass young women on television. It's completely uncalled for. Yes, this generation is unlike the the announcers. I get it, but I hear this exact sheet on a daily basis about how much better the old days were, and how this new generation is so self absorbed. So are the guys sexists, no. Are they bastards, yes.

Also the guy in the video literally takes every opportunity to insult the feminist blogger. Like his attacks range from insulting her over trivial sheet (like trying to inform her viewers exactly what she was talking about) and being out right incorrect. Yes, women aren't "forced" to buy cosmetics, but I have several videos showing you why the idea that women don't have to wear make-up to be considered pretty is absolute bullshit.

1. All humans are inherently narcissistic.

2. They wasted money going to a game only to not watch the game and spend time taking selfies. I don't give a flying rats ass what excuse you have, its rude. The commentators aren't being a**hats because of old values, they're questioning why these girls are spending time here when they aren't even watching the freaking game. They went to a stadium that was being broadcasted on television, no one is safe from criticism in that regard.

3. These commentators and others have embarrassed other stupid people who enter these stadiums too. It's not uncalled for, I would be pissed too if the whole reason they are here, they are simply taking selfies. What happened to the game? And if you didn't have any real drive to watch the game, why are you here? What about the kid whose dad tried to get his kid to the game for his birthday, but the seats he ordered got taken, by a bunch of girls who didn't even watch the freaking game. Don't want to watch the game? Don't go and give the seat to those who WILL watch the game. The selfie campaign was for one freaking selfies, not 300.

4. Laci described selfies as a way to self-love, and as a middle finger to self-hate. That is narcissistic. He was not incorrect but nice try.

5. And the make-up thing is funny because once again, it comes down to preference. Laci tried to pull this conspiracy theory nonsense with sexism, society, and what not when it all came down to consumer preference. The diet and make up industry do not RELY on self-loathing, that is absolutely ridiculous. The diet industry relies on medical validity, not freaking self-loathing.

I don't entirely disagree with your points, but, hell, shaming those girls because they're somehow less deserving of those tickets is so freaking lame. There's a whole slippery slope when you start doing that in such a conscious manner. The computer you're using right now? Donate it to someone who needs it more.

And in their defence, they were offered tickets to another game and they declined them in favour of donations to a domestic abuse charity.

That charity idea was freaking cool on their part. That much is true.

However, I disagree because of your use of the Slippery Slope Fallacy, but that depends on whether you count it as a fallacy or not. You can call it lame or not, I suppose that is valid, but I believe that not only are they wasting their time and money, they have taken something away from someone who actually WOULD have used it. And frankly, it is just rude. I don't care if you paid money or not, that doesn't mean we throw etiquette out the window. Now, should they be thrown out? No. Can they be criticized in any capacity for it? Yes.

The assumptions you're making are that they are wasting their time and money, and also that they're not using it 'properly'. I don't really agree with that, because if they wanna hang out at a baseball game, let them do them. They probably have rationale for it anyway: I doubt they were taking selfies the whole game, for instance. It's unfair to force them to account for such scenarios such as the birthday scenario you produced. You could do the same for literally anything, so it's just unreasonable.

If you go to watch, say, Jurassic World, just to like rip the hell out of it, or just as filler, are you less deserving than a 12-year old who's a dinosaur fanatic, has been waiting for its release for the past year, and it's his birthday? We're only human. We can't account for everyone.

In simplest terms, they probably bought the baseball tickets with the intention of going to a baseball game. They are free to do what they want when they actually get there. I'm not judgemental enough or invested enough in their lives to bother about the fact that they're taking selfies other than to say "You girls enjoy yourselves."

I can cede to those terms.

However, I will stand by my original argument that they had every right to be criticized. They are not above criticism, the amount of time they spent doing that is ridiculous to say the least. For Ellyte to say it was simply a matter of a generational gap is wrong on many levels. I want to know why the girls spent so many minutes taking selfies instead of watching the game? It's pointless and I don't think they were being "a**hats", I feel they were fine in their assessment and in no way just being jerks.

I'm sorry but I laughed at almost all the woman's points in that video. Half of them were fabricated and pitiful, maybe the commentator shouldn't have commented on it, but her points were ridiculous to say the least.

Couldn't agree more, but honestly, would you really not focus on a host of girls who are sitting at a stadium and not even remotely looking at the game they are attending instead to take selfies?

And frankly, it's Laci Green... I laugh at every point she ever makes in any video...

No, fair enough, criticise as you will. Even I thought "that's a hell lot of selfies". We can all make judgements of course. I think that if you do something in a public space, you can expect to be judged. I'm of the opinion that the focus of the commentators was rather excessive though. Me thinking something in my head is different to someone airing it on national TV as part of their job. I couldn't even imagine the backlash if an overweight person was caught buying a hot dog and a commentator went, "They're not even watching the game, just eating!" God, the reaction would be ugly. It's not too far off here. I'm not entirely convinced that its their profession to judge on other people's lifestyle choices.

Good that we could come to a substantial compromise. :)

1. That responds to my point, how? If all humans are inherently narcissistic as you say then it just makes you and the commentators raging hypocrites for criticizing someone's narcissism.

2. They took selfies for a couple of minutes at a what, 3 hour baseball game... yeah they really wasted their money to just go take selfies at a baseball game. You're assuming they spent all their time taking selfies. I'll say it once and I'll say it again they spent their own money to go to that baseball game, and it is their own business what they did with that time. They went to a baseball game to have fun (which is what I'm assuming you do at a baseball game, but what do I know) and that's what I'm assuming they did. Also, yes it is their old values, or are we just going to forget them saying "welcome to parenting in 2015" cause obviously some college girls taking selfies has to do with modern parenting...? Or the part where they say "the beauty of baseball is that you can have a conversation with your neighbor", because the girls aren't laughing, and joking with each other, yup just dailed in not a clue in the world.

3. I don't get how the girls are "stupid people". They're literally just happened to be taking selfies when the camera was on them. You're assuming the girls were only there to take selfies, when likely they weren't. Also just because they do it to others doesn't make it right that they did it to these girls. I don't get why publicly humiliating someone should be considered socially acceptable, or funny. It's not like the girls where doing anything wrong in the first place either. Secondly it's not like they just have one long shot of the girls taking selfies, they go back to them at least twice, specifically to make of them. That's uncalled for, and rude.

4. I was talking about the part where she talks about how people might've heard about the video with the girls from the sorority, and he cuts to say "no I genuinely had no idea what you where talking about". That's a stupid criticism. I don't know about you, but generally I like to tell people what I'm talking about before I launch it to a big tirade about it, but that's just me. Also since you appear to not be able to see any flaw in the guy's argument let me point them out to you. First of all he says the announcers did nothing wrong, but I've already addressed that they did multiple times, but I'm sure you'll just ignore it anyways. Or the point he brings up about Elliot Rodger, he refutes his own point, the guy was a homicidal psychopath, and yet he says "but still". There is no funking "but still" at the end of the sentence, who cares about what is said about a psychopath. His point about how the announcers "never said the girls weren't real fans", but what do you think mocking someone for not paying attention is doing?

5. This has got to be your worst point though, like what do you mean it comes down to preference??? Do you know any women, like at all? Wearing make-up is a choice yes, but young women are shamed for looking ugly when they don't wear make-up, or being liars and fake when guys see a girl without her make-up on. That's a problem. That when girls post pictures of themselves with make-up, and guys comment with "this is why i have trust issues". That is a goddamn problem. This video is all the proof I need to completely refute your point.

You see sheet like that, and you want to tell me that the cosmetics industry is not based of of self-loathing. You want to tell me that my friends getting bullied for weight problems (that some of them can't control), but the diet industry doesn't run on self-loathing. Most people go on diets because they aren't satisfied with their appearance. THAT. IS . SELF-LOATHING.

Honestly get off your funking high horse.

Honestly get off your f***ing high horse.

1. Neither of us were criticizing her for narcissism and note how I didn't really use narcissism in a negative context.

2. That doesn't prove the generational gap argument. The parenting joke, was implying a possible disconnect between parent and child that could lead them to rely on technology more. The beauty talking to your neighbor argument applies to all time. They spent money and can do whatever they want and the commentators can criticize whatever they want.

3. It's not public humiliation, calm down. Literally there are thousands of other people making comments about how ridiculous this selfie culture has become, this is not new. The commentators did not insult them. They simply made some jokes about how they weren't paying attention to the game when the camera was on them.

4. It wasn't a criticism. He genuinely had no idea what she was talking about and had to look up the story after she made the video. It wasn't a criticism at all. You believe they did something wrong, I do not. Also, the Elliot Roger argument was a joke. Like, it was a really obvious joke too. "What do you think mocking someone for not paying attention is doing?" Uhm... I don't know... mocking someone for not paying attention?

5. Bull hell they are. If you want to play the experience card, I rarely ever see women shamed for not wearing makeup. In fact, I see more women shamed FOR wearing makeup. It is not a problem, it's the freaking internet. That video proves nothing other than she got some stupid comments by stupid people. You making the claim that that video shows some Societal issue with women is ludicrous. Not only that, you blame the cosmetics industry for some anonymous hate she got on social media means the Cosmetics Industry thrives on her hating herself? Where in any of those comments did they say they were employees at cosmetics stores? Nowhere? Then stop blaming them. Once again, your friends are not bullied BECAUSE OF THE DIET INDUSTRY, they are bullied because people can be jerks. Most people go on diets because they are not satisfied with their appearance, that much is true, but you making it some type of crime to even remotely consider dieting is wrong on many levels. Not only that, the diet industry relies more on the medical industry to provide new breakthroughs then anything else.

Also, how about you calm the f*ck down since you raging helps bar nothing.

I don't get what part of my comment makes it seem like I'm blaming the cosmetics or diet industry. I legitimately enjoy having cosmetics to make myself feel pretty, and I believe that dieting can help you lead a better/healthier lifestyle if you are having trouble doing it yourself. What I am saying is that because there are people who mock women for being ugly for not wearing make-up, or because there are people who act like women are "lying" by wearing make-up that is how both industries feed off of self-loathing. If you want to fight me on experience that's fine, but I can tell you as a trans woman who deals with this, and more, on a daily basis you're going to lose. Your point defeats itself anyways, the fact that women are shaped for wearing make-up is sexist, and wrong. The video does show a societal problem with how women are treated, and I fail to see how you can't comprehend this.

Do you honestly think these industries want this? You saying they feed off of the self-hate is blaming them by attributing their existence to a society of self-loathing. My point did not defeat itself and you spouting the "Sexism" card did not make it any less or more valid. The video does NOT show a problem, a bunch of anonymous trolls and jerks is not a societal problem. I comprehend the concept, but I disagree with the validity of its existence.

The rest of your post is Identity Politics and I refuse to delve into that.

I'm not saying their existence attributes to a society of self-loathing though. I'm saying the society of self-loathing that has been created by, oh no, sexist opinions is something both industries undeniably benefit from. I'm not "spouting a sexism card" to "make my point more valid", this is a legitimately sexist problem that girls are told that they are undesirable unless they are thin and naturally pretty (because apparently even wearing make-up is a problem now).

Also there is nothing political about my post. I am stating that as a woman I see and deal with this first hand, and thus probably have a bit more experience, and knowledge about the issue.

You don't know the meaning of Identity politics then.

Also Men endure the same amount of hate and bigotry for the same thing on the internet. Those who are dubbed fat neckbeards who are too nerdy and shy to remotely get a girlfriend, who, if they are not muscular, are accosted the same amount. So bull on your sexist/boogeyman conspiracy.

If you're going to make a statement about cyber bullying, you might want to first actually check to make sure that the statistics back up your claim– which, if you'd done any research into the topic, completely undermine you're point.

So I just recently found out that the girls were actually participating in some sort of selfie campaign that the stadium itself announced to the crowd. One selfie would be picked for a cool prize or something like that.

In light of that information, I feel bad for making assumptions on those girls and am more impressed that they handled their undeserved scrutiny with sending the tickets to charity instead. And I'm nonplussed on why the announcers weren't aware of said campaign.

Sorry if I offended anyone, I'll look into the full story next time.
