Undertale is an RPG made by Toby Fox, a composer for Homestuck and, at times, Starbomb, and most of the art is done by Temmie Chang, who has also worked with Starbomb.

The biggest characteristic of this RPG is that you don't have to kill a single enemy, if you don't want to. There are 3 main routes:

  • The Neutral Route, which can be played in the grey area between the other two. It is recommended that your first run be a Neutral Route played as a pacifist, as it allows you access to the Pacifist route by loading your save and tidying ends up after the initial final boss.
  • The Pacifist Route, where you don't kill even one enemy. You befriend as many characters as you can, never stain your hands with blood, and have to figure out the puzzles of "sparing" a character without hurtign them.
  • The Genocide Route, and the related No Mercy route. No Mercy is killing anything that gets in yoru way, such as bosses, and technically falls under Neutral. Genocide is killing every monster in every area as you move along. Think of it like a Pokemon game... with murder. This ending also causes the other two endings to be permanently altered, unless you delete your save FILES in the folder. Also features the two hardest bosses.

Another factor of the gameplay is that, in addition to Turn-Based battling, you have a top-down shooter segment where you must avoid enemy attacks every turn, making the battles a bit more dynamic.

The game takes a very meta approach, with the fourth wall being broken, some concepts that we take for granted being integral to the plot/idea of the game, and more.

The music is definitely referential, and one Homestuck song known as Megalovania was polished to be used for the hardest boss in the game (don't look it up, it's a spoiler). The other hardest boss has a very Touhou-esque theme, fitting the bullet-style fight, and some themes, such as the 'dating theme', are reminiscant of games like Ace Attorney. Just to name a few.

The game is very much about the characters, and it does a great job of makng them shine. Papyrus is immensely popular already, despite the game's release being less than a month ago. Other characters, like Toriel (Goat Mom henceforth) also has quite a bit of adoration. The comedy shines, too.

All in all, this was a very welcome experience, and one of the most enjoyable games I've played in ages. The characters are memorable, lovable, and just plain fun. Even the main antagonist is likable, with only one character standing out as unlikable... on purpose. I won't divulge, due to spoilers, but yeah.

Oh, and dogs! Seven of them! Take that, CoD and company!

Figured we needed this thread, so here ya go!

Playing my first run right now, even though I spoiled myself up until fighting Papyrus. The actual battle was the first part of the game I haven't seen played by other people.

[spoiler=One thing I realized]I think petting the lesser dog kills it later. Not sure if that's just the snowman or the dog too, but I only pet it once and it was standing there making the snowman.

Yeah, lesser dog changes based on how much you pet it.

You can pet it until you get told you have a problem, that mankind should never have pet that much... and then lesser dog's head goes off the bottom of the screen, "Where no dog has gone before!"

Fun fact: I'm friends with the lead developer (Toby Fox) IRL. He's really down to earth and really considered the project a labor of love (I did my China summer course with him and he was working on Undertale even half a world away, which was how I first heard of it), so I'm jazzed to see it receive so much acclaim.

That's it. Carry on~

I enjoyed the game, but I don't think it's really as good as people say it is (though that may perhaps be my own annoyance from having to hear over and over again about how this is the best game people have ever played etc. etc. though that's a whole issue in and of itself and it doesn't really matter anyway).

Music is dope af though.

So I've heard conflicting things about the necessity of going through the Neutral Ending first on Pacifist. Anyone know if you can actually just go back down to the CORE entrance and trigger the true ending?

From experience.

If you beat the Neutral Ending while playing as if you were on the pacifist route, right before you exit the CORE into the Hotel, you get Undyne's call.

After you do the Alphys sidequest, you go straight to the true end.
