Multi-member Online Games vs. Dungeons & Dragons

They both have their ups and downs.

MMOs have the pros of being games you can just start playing (even by yourself), without needing to gather friends together, and papers aren't flying everywhere. Buuuut you can feel very removed from the plot or the action, and they leave nothing to the imagination. Everything's simply in front of you.

Good old Pen & Paper is a lot more involved, since it's you and a group of friends sitting around a table, rolling dice and acting silly with each other. It leaves a lot to the imagination, which means you can shape the world as you see fit in your mind. But then again, it leaves A LOT to the imagination. Without the DM drawing up maps or something like that, the world can be all over the place and hard to remember. Also, lots of paper and dice all over the place.

I don't really have a preference, and there's clearly no better side, since, from my point of view, both have their pros and cons. But whether those pros and cons are actually pros and cons in your mind is a different story.

I don't particularly like MMOs honestly, they don't appeal to me. However I see why some do like it. James made some good points there and I'd have to agree.

I love DnD and similar things but also you need to have a good group of people and time to do it. One bad person can sour the whole experience. But when it's good it's really good.

D&D will always have a special place in my heart, but I agree that it's not for everyone. Some people are visual, and require a lot of visuals. D&D supplies visuals with maps, tokens, etc. but not always. It depends on the DM. What I really like about D&D is the creativity involved and the fun of doing it with a bunch of other people.

MMOs are also nice though. Sure, they can get a bit grindy, but they're still fun. People can be jerks though, but people can be jerks anywhere, and it's a lot easier to escape from them in an MMO than a D&D table.

One thing they both share is the problems that arise when people decide to ditch. Like, if nobody comes to the D&D session then it will obviously have to be canceled. Or if nobody is online in your party/guild during a scheduled quest or raid in an MMO. At least with an MMO you can still do other stuff like go solo for a bit.

I prefer D&D but MMOs are nice too, idk.
