The 360° Cube

I can see a compromise. See this: http://riptidelab.com/forum/threads/polycubing-and-packages.551/

You could have a 360 cube, but with various slots being flexible, so you could have 360 cards and more cards that rotate in and out of particular slots. Gives you some variance, but with some control, so can still include more narrow archetypes. So, something like Tinker could always be in the cube, but a random Golgari slot could rotate between Vraska, Deadbridge Chant and something else to give subtly different flavours.

Anyway, have a ponder on that.

I agree with Klav that we should some archetype brainstorming. Some basic things we want to support, and then talk about colour pairs later. Not every colour pair has to be tightly bound to some playstyle.

I want Tinker in there. Not like broke "let's tinker for a myr battlesphere" archetype. Just value Tinker. Like Tinkering a Solemn Simulacrum for a Gilded Lotus.

Huh...that's interesting. Certainly a thing to think of, but I still feel like at first, we should just build a regular 360 and THEN possibly expand on some slots with alternatives.

Tinker's always a cool thing to have around. And not including big ass things would make it much more fun to play with. Outside of the typical dual-colored archetypes, we should try for some mono ones too, tri and above colored ones feel too ambitious.

The rotating slot idea is interesting, but let's not get too ambitious to start.

Well, no more Modern-legal cube. :P

Also, I'd rather have the big-ass artifact creatures over Tinker. It's a lot more limiting to cut out all stuff like Batterskull, Wurmcoil Engine, etc than just to drop Tinker and call it a day.

Never was supposed to be Modern LEGAL, just around Modern's power level.

Also honestly, as stupid as it sounds, in a limited format, Tinker into Battlesphere sounds more dangerous than Tinker into Wurmcoil. Wurmcoil's at least a single thread that can be answered with PtE/Swords/whatever.

I'd make a 360, then see what slots can rotate in and out if we're thirsting for more variance. If it goes alright, we can leave that on the backbench instead. Sounds like a plan?

Modern power level, not Modern-legal c: Adding Tinker doesn't mean not having big-ass artifact creatures! There's a line though. Batterskull is unfun. Wurmcoil is ludicrously unfun. I think Steel Hellkite is a good non-oppressive Tinker target. Triskelavus is Myr Battlesphere, but not as dumb. There's bomby non-creatures too. Mindslaver and Memory Jar come to mind.

I keep misreading that, lol. But my point still stands. If Tinker and big artifact creatures exist in the same cube, Tinker's the more threatening of the pair.

And as for archetypes I think could work?

- Tokens

- Aggro

- Burn

- Control

- Dredge/graveyard value

Yep, exactly what I meant.

Well yeah, we can still have big targets, just make them not as stupid. btw I could totally see having multiple themes for archetypes, but make them kinda overlap. Like, lately UR is getting a lot of artifact-themed support, but UR is also a naturally tempo-y color combo, so UR could have both tempo and artifacts as viable build paths, and of course it'd be entwining with each other. You could run only the blue part of the artifact side and add another color, same for red, or run UR tempo with Tinker package, etc.

Yeah, though as Rai said, there are big targets that are somehow tame. Like, Mindslaver sounds powerful as hell, even moreso if we include Academy Ruins, but without Tron, it's a 13 mana combo that'd need you to go through a long, grindy game or run green to go with it.
