New Summon mechanic! Polar Monsters and Quantum Summoning!

Recommended Posts

So I've been toying around with this mechanic for a while, and I decided it was time to show it off. I wanted to come up with an idea for a new Summoning mechanic, but the one I initially came up with (Material Summoning) seemed needlessly complex; perhaps I'll post it someday anyway. But then I came up with this new idea known as Quantum Summoning, which I describe as being somewhere between Synchro and Pendulum Summoning.

The idea is that in your main deck would be certain monsters with an ability known as "Polar". All Polar Monsters would, as part of their card description, feature a value known as "Polarity", which ranges from -12 to +12. Similar to Pendulum Effects for high-scale monsters, there would generally be some sort of negative effect for keeping a monster with very high positive or negative Polarity on the field.

The special mechanic of Polar Monsters is that they essentially have the ability to cancel each other out, thereby allowing you to perform a "Quantum Summon". If the total Polarity of the Polar Monsters on your field is zero, with an equal balance of positive and negative Polarity, you may send all those Polar Monsters to the Graveyard to summon a Quantum Monster from your Extra Deck whose Power (the equivalent to Level) is equal to the total Polarity on each side.

This is a bit hard to explain, so I'll provide some examples using characters we're all duly familiar with.

[spoiler=Aperture AI Sentry Turret]

JG1WB5N.jpg

Polarity: -3

Effect: During your Main Phase 1, you may reduce this monster's ATK by half to activate this effect. This monster can attack twice this turn.

[spoiler=Aperture AI Wheatley]

UodLOwO.jpg

Polarity: +4

Effect: During your Main Phase 1, you may discard one card from your hand to treat this card's polarity as -4 for the remainder of the duel. If this card is Tributed in order to perform a Quantum Summon, the monster summoned loses 300 ATK and DEF.

[spoiler=Aperture Test Subject Chell]

NrqJW7B.jpg

Polarity: +7

Effect: Once per turn, if this card would be destroyed in battle, you may send one card to the Graveyard to negate the destruction of this card; all battle damage is calculated normally. This card gains 200 ATK for every Warrior-Type monster in your Graveyard.

So suppose you have all these monsters out on the field. By using Wheatley's ability, you'll end up with Polar Monsters with total Polarities of +7 and -7. By Tributing all three monsters, you may Quantum Summon a 7th Power Quantum Monster, such as...

[spoiler=Aperture AI GLaDOS]

dfKp09w.jpg

Effect: Requires 2 or more Polar Monsters whose total Polarities equal +7 and -7.

Once per turn, you may target one "Aperture AI" monster on your side of the field and equip it to this monster; the targeted monster is treated as an Equip Spell while this effect is engaged. This card gains 300 ATK and DEF for every card equipped in this way. You may have a maximum of three cards equipped through this effect. When this card is sent to the Graveyard, all Machine-Type monsters on the field are destroyed.

(I should point out that I kind of fudged the card background. I didn't know how to make my own custom templates, so at the recommendation of Hyperduck I just used YCM's template for the anime-exclusive Dark Synchro Monsters. I rather like the way it turned out.)

I find this to be an interesting mechanic but why is it the quantum monsters level focuses on the positive polarity level? I was thinking maybe to have positive and negative quantum monsters so you could have a bit more variety. The cards would be summoned in the same way the the negative quantum cards will focus on the negative polarity level and vise versa. I honestly see this something that could work. I mean it is a somewhat simple idea, and it advances game play. One other question, is quantum summoning treated as a special summon? I really like this idea but without good support cards, getting out a quantum card could be quite hard since you would most likely need 3-4 monsters to get one out. Also another problem would be making cards who has a good star level and polarity level. There should be a limit to how high a cards polarity can be because you could just make a level one with +/- 12 polarity. But if you need help with the card template I could do that. I just need you to explain it to me.

The reason it focuses on the positive Level is just because having negative-Level monsters doesn't make sense except for something like the anime-exclusive Dark Synchro Monsters. It isn't really "focusing" on the positive anyway; I just phrased it poorly. I just meant that the total max polarity on each side is equal to the level of the Quantum Monster you can summon. And yes, Quantum Summoning does count as a Special Summoning.

As for the high-polarity, for one thing, typically lower-level monsters will have lower Polarity (you'll notice that Chell is Level 5). I also mentioned the idea of higher polarities typically having some sort of penalty, such as having to pay Life Points each turn to keep a +10 Polar monster out on the field. There could also be Spell or Trap Cards that could change a monster's Polarity by discarding cards or some such thing.

This sounds tricky...like The Tricky...

I may not be the best judge, but it looks like a cheap copy of Synchros...

It seems like it'd actually be harder to summon these monsters, so they should probably have better effects than their levels might suggest...

Also, you could make the most powerful Quantum monster a level 1, just because of the difficulty that might be involved...^~^

I think this Quantum Summon is nothing but a second way to Xyz Summon .... Even monster level, and the effects to increase or decrease the level are characteristic of xyz monsters. I do not believe this is very different from a Xyz Summon, but have a difference: the Quantum Summon is not a Special Summon. This will stop the effects of cards like "Vanity Emptiness" and "Maxx C" with a new way to have powerful monsters in your field. For this fact, good anti-summon cards as "Bottomless Trap Hole" and "Torrential Tribute" can not be used, this can give a guarantee that your monster will not be destroyed so easily.

Now a point that can not pass is because you can only make a Quantum Summon monsters with polar, that limit their deck to use only such monsters because otherwise you would be greatly reducing the chances of summoning the Quantum monsters. This can you take the chance of using machine-type good cards like Cyber Dragon or other type of suppor card. We should also remember that because Polar monsters are other monsters we can create a variety of spells to use only them and helps them in the field.

The concept is interesting, but it's basically a different form of Xyz where you trash your materials instead of overlaying them.

What I would suggest is making it have a new "level" system, such as where Xyz introduced "ranks" so you could get more variety in there. Negative, Positive, and Neutral Quantum monsters. I'd probably call it a "charge" or something along those lines. It won't resemble Xyz so much that way as they don't have to become exactly equal.

Another thing is the Quantum monster's card description. You really should put the materials in there, how many Polar monsters it needs, what type, attribute, etc.

And also, if it isn't a Special Summon, then what is it? As Synchros, Fusions, Rituals, Xyz, and Pendulums are all forms of Special Summons, why wouldn't this be one as well? It's still a summon. The reasoning stated above, (no offense, flavio) is BS. There's a reason for anti-summoning cards and counters alike. Don't bend the system for a new mechanic, that'll just make them overpowered.

The idea about having Charge instead of Level is nice, but your concept doesn't really fit with my original plan (that being that each Level for a Quantum Monster is brought into existence by the cancellation of a positive and negative charge). I guess I could say that Quantum Monsters have "Powers" instead of Levels for a bit of distinction. As for the Special Summon thing, yeah, that's going back to how it was.

  • 2 weeks later...

Can I suggest adding on to this? Maybe have Quantum monsters with positive or negative polarity for more variety? The summoning can be a bit like Xyz ("Machines with combined ATK of more than 3000 or something) then the polarity of the Quantum monster will be the combined polarity of the polar material monsters underneath it (Wheatley + AI sentry turrent will be +1, or by using Wheatley's effect, -7). Then the monster can have effects based on its polarity, which can be good or bad.

Example:

p155cXS.jpg

Some of the effects can overlap so the aim is to get as many 'good' effects or avoid 'bad' ones. Sorry for the card backing, I dunno how to change to the dark synchro background of the online editor.

Hope this helps, at least in the idea generation :D
