Steven Universe

I was surprised there wasn't anything for this. This is the best quality of a show we have gotten from CN for a while now.

Each character is their own.

Above decent voice acting.

Well paced story.

Comedy for a range of ages.

Nice music performances.

There isnt that much to not like about the show. One thing or the other may not be your cup of tea... But they sure did a good job for what they were aiming for and made none the less.

discuss...

I like to think Peridot is only bothered by Garnet being a fusion is because the only expirence with fusion that Peridot has, is with those expirements. IE, she has only ever witnessed the ugly side of it, and doesn't know anything beyond that. So naturally she would be disgusted by it.

I mean, shes totally for fusion, but to her it's just a science project and nothing else.

Ugh..what's up with this mini-hiatus tho...

I love this show.  I like it a lot.  The backstories of characters I thought would never get the light of day is bewildering!  At times though, I think this show tries waaaaaaaaaaaay too hard to spread some messages...like obvious lesbian undertones (which I'm fine with, this stuff should be alright in this day and age).

also Perithyst...it's canon ;3

So you made a furry gemsona? What kind of gem is he/she even?

What's his/her name?

You give nothing but pictures!

I wasn't happy about it either, but that was only when I had NO idea when the next episodes are coming out- I hate wanting to know something and not being able to find out.

Now that I know there will be more episodes come the beginning of next year, I can wait. I waited 10 years for Toy Story 3, I can wait a few months for more Steven Universe.

Okay, no. Gems have no specific gender so there cannot be "lesbian undertones". Even IF you threw that out and said, yes, the Gems ARE the gender they appear as, the only undertones that can be confirmed at all would be Ruby X Sapphire and Pearl's feelings towards Rose.

Though let me ask this. Are those messages in any way ruining the show for you? Is it making the show unbearable to watch?

If not then I don't see a problem in them. Spread the message that there is more than one type of relationship- as long as it doesn't take anything away from the narrative.

Not really but . . . . I support.

They REALLY need to fuse.

You should know that I came in here knowing the gems are gender neutral, but you already know what I was going for with that second point.  It's pretty hard to get past the fact that the gems are so feminine and are voiced by females as well.  Little kids that this show is aimed for don't really know the specifics of gender, so they're always going to assume the fact.

But you are correct, it's not ruining the show for me at all, it makes me think highly of it.  "One Love" and all.  Plus they're aliens, they aren't contained to human relationship standards.  I was a little uncomfortable watching that RubyxSaphire scene with my little brother though...lucky it was followed by some cheese ass flirty lines.

HOWEVER, there is one scene that's been bothering me for some time now!  The scene where steven cross-dressed for the talent show.  I wouldn't put it too far past Steven, but still, I thought it was out of character for the most part....idk just a nitpick of mine.  I didn't like that episode too much either.

Really?

"The gems are so feminine"?

Out of ALL of the Gems we've seen so far the only ones I would call feminine are Pearl, Rose, and Lapis. NONE of the others fit into the traditional values of what counts as "femininity" . . . . and that's a good thing!

As for the people this show is aimed for, I wouldn't say "little kids". To me, shows aimed for "little kids" are something along the lines of Barney, Dora the Explorer, or Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Steven Universe is made for children and preeteens with adults in mind, as most good "children's entertainment" is now.

To quote Disney himself, "Adults are only kids grown up, anyways."

Basically, don't talk down to children, they understand a lot more than "adults" give them credit for- trust me I have a six year old niece and she understands a LOT.

Actually, I like that episode BECAUSE of that reason. It didn't go the traditional, cliche route of Sadie still going out because of arbitrary reasons. Instead Steven did that so she didn't have too, essentially putting himself in an embarrassing situation for a friend.

It was an interesting way to show that Steven cares about other's feelings.

I like the episode for those reasons. It's the traditional "overbearing parent" story but instead of just the parent realizing they're being overbearing and promises to stop, both realize they were in the wrong. Sadie for not telling her mom sooner and her mom for, well, not paying attention.

And they TALK about their problems instead of one just saying, "Yeah, okay, I'll never/do that from now on. Promise!"

Oh!

If those were a part of the original thread then I apologize, I didn't really take a good look at them.

So it's just a magical creature like Lion. Cool!

Listen Sage-dude, I didn't come here to get into a social justice debate alright?  I was referring to feminine as in body types and voice.  Sure Jasper is a more masculine gem, but if I were to have to guess a distinct gender, it'd be female.  I would also argue that Garnet is fairly feminine, being made of Ruby and Sapphire's relationship.

And sure, I might've talked down to kids, but they don't take it as seriously as we do.  To them it's just normal.  Whatever.  Cool quote btw?

And sure pt.2, Steven saves the day like he always does, But did he really have to do the whole dress, shoes, and make-up thing.  Could've just gone out as regular Steven Universe and sang Sadie's song.  It was just kind of cringey is all.

I rather liked the cross-dressing. I mean, Steven is someone who is in no way's afraid to make himself look stupid, especially on stage. That's the Steven charm, and why no one even laughed at him when he appeared. He's a kid and a complete goofball, so it is well within his character to dress up, probably also because he probably didn't think his actual duds were stage-worthy. That and Rule of Funny.
