[MtG] Banlist Announcements - ORI

Recommended Posts

Standard, Modern, Legacy, Vintage: No bans, no unbans.

Commander: No bans, no unbans.

Duel (French) Commander: Mystical Tutor banned.

Discuss? I for one am not surprised, but I feel like there's gonna be a seas change soon. Two reasons:

1) There's gotta be something to be done in Modern to keep the growing barrier to entry down, and the banlist is the only reliable way to do that (if not a popular method).

2) Chalice of the Void is really wrecking Vintage: Workshop -> CV on 1 -> CV on 0 = GG. Whether this is intentional on Wizards' part or not remains to be seen.

Banning stuff in modern is not the answer to keeping prices down, that's probably the worst way to go about fixing that problem. Reprint sets are the most effective but it can cause problems as showcased by MMA 1 and 2.

I'm expecting something to be done about miracles in legacy pretty soon. Either by getting rid of counterbalance, dig, top or terminus. The deck is too over represented in the meta and the mechanics of the deck often cause games to go to time.

I'm not to familiar with vintage but I can see chalice as a problem, then again this is a format were t1 trinispheres are allowed.

I was surprised no Summer Bloom or Top were banned. Disappointed, if anything.

These banlists always bother me because Legacy is something that is mostly overlooked by wizards and Modern never seems to matter unless a Pro Tour is coming up. But it is Modern PPTQ season, as well, which is something different and that would make sense as to why they didn't/

Reprints haven't helped too much, though. If you try to push down the prices on one part of a deck through printing more, it'll get more people interested and boost the prices of the non-reprinted parts.

You also have the effect of printing more of a modern cards will cause an increase in interest in interest in the format, and an increase in demand. Thus prices can end up going up. I know I picked up Arcbound Ravager for like $15 or so a year ago and now they are like $40-$45.
