Bosses you don't want to fight.

And I'm not talking about bosses you don't like to fight for difficulty reasons, I'm more talking about sentimental reasons. For me, one of the biggest is Sif from Dark Souls. Which is kinda weird, as out of any game to have an enemy I wouldn't want to fight, Dark Souls isn't the kind that first comes to mind, at least until you look into the lore.

[spoiler=A bit of explanation.]In the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, you learn that Sif's companion Artorias, instead of actually halting the spread of the Abyss, was overwhelmed and corrupted by it, only able to sacrifice his shield in order to erect a barrier to protect Sif. After you defeat Artorias and lay him to rest, you are able to later find Sif and rescue him, and even summon him to help fight against the main boss. This all takes place in the past, so while you halt the spread of the Abyss in Artorias's stead, since you're from the future your heroics must go unsung and Artorias is credited with it, his failure being covered up. Cut to the present where you require Artorias's ring which grants the ability to traverse the Abyss, and you must fight a fully grown Sif who continues to guard Artorias's grave. Rescuing Sif during the DLC gives the alternate cutscene posted above, while not doing so gives you

.

Even though Sif recognizes you as his savior in the past, he still must fight you, in loyalty of his former companion and/or to keep the player from following Artorias and falling victim to the Abyss as well. The soundtrack for the fight and Sif starting to limp when his health is low doesn't help, either.

Almost every boss in Dark Souls is really sympathetic, save a few. After finding out some of the backstories, I felt like a monster.

Shadow of the Colossus does it for me too. Something about how graceful the creatures are, and the ultimate reward for killing them...I was always a bit sad with my victories over them.

Fire Emblem games always had many bosses I didn't want to fight.

[spoiler=Various Fire Emblem Games Spoilers]

Such as Lyon and Selena in Sacred Stones

Mustafa in Awakening

Lloyd and Linus in Blazing Sword

The Wishblade holders in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn (Bryce and Levail)

Camus in Shadow Dragon

And many others I could name.

[spoiler Didn't really want to fight them.]Ren and Tchlatga in Etrian Odyssey.

They've been pretty cool characters up to the point where I meet them again in the final stratum. I understand it's part of their job to fight the party at that point, but couldn't they have joined me instead, and kicked glorious collective ass?

Shin Megami Tensei IV has two prime examples of this, but they're spoilers, so...

[spoiler=WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI IV]Very early in the game, we have the boss fight with Issachar, your childhood best friend who was corrupted by the Black Samurai's forbidden books. Throughout the fight, he asks you psychological questions, begs for you to kill him, and even TWITCHES. After beating him, you see his bloodied face and listen to his final words.

Isabeau is a different case. She's someone you don't want to fight because of how long she's been travelling with you and your other samurai companions, and she fights and asks you questions because of the different path you chose. She's only a boss fight on the Law and Chaos routes, though, so if you got Neutral as your first ending, well, I don't know what to say to you.

[spoiler=Somewhat spoilery for Bloodborne]Best one I can think of is probably a tie between Mergo's Wet Nurse and Gherman

Mergo's Wet Nurse is the only boss to date (that I remember), that I felt actively threatened by from a visual perspective, but digging into what could be implied, that the only reason it attacks you is because it considers you a threat to the infant Great One that it's taking care of. Yeah.... I feel kinda dirty for brutaly slaughtering it.

Gherman I still dont quite understand what struck a cord with me, maybe it's the music, or it's the bit immediately before with Gherman sounding kinda dissapointed that yet another hunter has been driven mad by the hunt, and that he needs to put them down. Meanwhile he himself is still stuck within the dream and forced to host it for the countless hunters comming through, with The Doll as his only companion. Whatever the reason, I felt immensely bad for having to put this guy down, particularly since he'd been rather friendly ever since the start of the game. And as far as I'm concerned, it's the best fight outof all 3 possible end bosses
