Johan Liebert
I'll let someone else start with an assertion towards one or the other. In most debates, I can debate both sides. But it's still very fun to me. So, let the games begin!
EHN.
This seems like an interesting idea, but it really depends on where you set the boundaries between old and new, i.e. does new mean past few years, this decade or this century?
mitchermitcher
'Better' is purely subjective on whether you have s*** taste or not. I do think though that a lot of old favoritism is only because the only 'old' anime you've seen are the often recommended ones, and because 'old' encompasses a wider time range(Most of the recommended stuff are the 80s and the 90s) than 'recent' anime(Which for many people refers to, say, post-2006, for example). Just gonna say I personally prefer newer stuff most of the time. Because I like boobs.
Maeriberii Haan
I'd say a fair barrier would be the turn of the century. Pre and post-2000 anime. Not going to put my opinion here just yet, though, I think it'll be better if we as a start try to identify the fundamental differences between old vs new anime. Mainly not on things related to art, since technology marches on after all and even if ''I like newer anime since they're graphically superior'' is a valid argument, it won't really generate an actual fruitful discussion. Rodrigo
Everyone will be biased. People who grew watching anime in the 90s will most likely prefer those shows, and likewise people who grew watching anime in the 00s will most likely prefer those. In my case, I became a real otaku only in 2013 and while I did watch DBZ and Yugioh when I was a kid, I can say I prefer the new, cutting edge technology, full of boobs shows. King K. Azo
I personally like the old shows, like Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Ramna 1/2, Yu Yu Hakasho.... Fist of the North Star... Gundam. I feel like back in the day, they could be dark, but they didn't shove it down your throats. Sure, they had a brooding character or two, but it didn't feel like everyone was angst-ing 24/7... Unless you were Evagelion. Hell, in the original Gundam, they slapped the brooding guy with the BRIGHT SLAP, and he became a man of destiny. They felt... Fun. Goku doing a Kamehameha, Ramna using Neko Style or turning into a girl, Kenshiro poking you until your head exploded. Ridiculous, yes. Fun? Hell ya. And sure, they had a sexy character or two, but that wasn't the selling point of the anime. And there is also the fact that a lot of these old anime is what inspired these new anime. I would mention One Piece, but no idea where that falls in old and new. Also, shout out to Gurren Lagann. Sure, it's a new anime, but it made me feel like a little kid again. mitchermitcher
I would mention One Piece, but no idea where that falls in old and new. OP surpasses time. That has true shounen SOUL that isn't very common in other shounen titles these days, not even with Shonen Jump.
The banterbus is in town
Old christmas cake > New shitty loli. This is also a statement for old and new anime. Although at least 3/5 of my top 5 anime are fucking old so who cares really. Just enjoy what you enjoy and if people say you have shit taste, tell them they're bitter virgins who should stop caring so much about chinese cartoons and get laid :^)

BANZAI!!!!
"Better" is kind of a subjective term, both based on personal preference and what sort of angle you're tackling the show from (ie. better from a technical standpoint, a writing standpoint, enjoyment standpoint, etc.). That being said, when someone brings up Anime that are considered "important" (you know, that required viewing as an anime fan kind of deal), the vast majority of the titles people will mention are almost guaranteed to be from the mid-to-late 80's and 90's (with the exceptions generally being influential stuff done by Go Nagai and Ozamu Tezuka in the late 60's and the 70's). I'm admittedly not the most knowledgeable when it comes to anime made after 2005ish, but i'd be hard pressed to find more than a handful of truly amazing anime made during the current era (hell the only things I can think of right now that are really "new" and fit the description are Madoka Magica and TTGL (and even TTGL is just an homage to a lot of shows that came before it). Compare to the at least 20 titles that I could name to you in my groggy, half awake state that came from the 1980's alone and you can sort of get what I'm saying. Right now the medium/genre/whatever you want to call it of anime is basically full of 2 things: adaptations and pandering. Shows with attractive character designs sell more than those without, and though adaptations from other media (manga, light novels, games, etc) have always been very common things in anime, nowadays I rarely here about a studio that isn't sunrise making an original work (and even then its just gundam again). Anime has always been about marketing to nerds, but the industry today is much smaller than it used to be (largely due to the fact that no one buys anime anymore), and so studios will 99% of the time create "safer" adaptations of things that people already know (kantai collection, any number of light novels, etc) since its easier to market, and the marketing to that small subsection of japanese nerds who like women in skimpy outfits with very odd personality quirks has taken the front seat in place of better storytelling. Basically what I'm saying is that anime today are, from a certain viewpoint (and one that i happen to have) much lower quality than they used to be. Crap has always been on the market in vast quantities, but lately the good stuff has become more or less nonexistant as perennial franchises like gundam stagnate and the market shrinks. This trend toward producing shows that will give studios more bang for their buck means that we will for the foreseeable future get more kantai collections and sword art onlines and no Wings of Honneamises or Macross Pluses or Cowboy Bebops, and because there's a whole generation of people now who are accustomed to seeing anime produced this way, people wont really know what their missing, and so the situation isn't likely to change. If you like the kind of thing that studios today make, more power to you. I'm not here to insult anyone's tastes or anything. But me, I think its a terrible thing, because when I think "good" anime, i think shows and movies are groundbreaking and unique and artful and experimental, because at one point, that was what anime was all about doing. It just isn't that way right now.
LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
Well. To me it really depends what you think of as good. I personally see anything that entertains me as good. And to that end, most of the anime that entertains me tends to be from after 2000. Of course I don't really know when most anime were made but that's the general trend. Now I will admit that older anime (in general) usually is of better quality, writing wise. But despite that I still have to say I prefer newer anime. Of course I also love me some feels and both old and new anime has given me that so not really anything to say there.
Tentacruel
There was plenty of shit in the 90's, we just don't remember it because it's not worth remembering. The reason we're seeing so much moeblob otaku-pandering is because it makes money. They can sell figures, and posters, and dakimakuras and actually turn a profit. When's the last time you paid actual money for a (recent) anime because it was cool and different? I haven't done it more than a few times. Crunchyroll is too convenient. Just Crouton
Watching old OVAs from the 80's when the concept was new, it's fun to see the companies throw randomness at the wall and either end up with a masterpiece like Hi No Tori, a gem like Megazone 23, or a trainwreck like Roots Search. It's the same reason why I like old games over new ones; in the 90's, the companies knew the tropes that worked, but they and smaller companies were willing to try new things, even if the ideas were stupid. In the 90's, we had an oversaturation of Megaman and Street Fighter on the SNES and Genesis, but we also had Dreamweb and Shadow of the Beast on the Amiga, and Doom and Heretic on PC. Now that anime companies know exactly what works, and know their fans will keep buying the same stuff over and over, they just make the same things over and over; moe/loli/otaku creepiness, manga/visual novel adaptions, and making new shows based on old ones. It's smart money-wise, but it's also boring. This also applies to the 80's and 90's (and their rapidly-growing army of giant robots,) but again, there were those lesser companies in the 80s and 90s that put out anime that may have been forgettable, but were unique for one reason or another. Visually, I like the rougher look of hand-drawn animation and the colors. I've noticed a lot more detail in the better-quality anime of old, from small scratches on giant robots, to heavily-detailed spaceships in sci-fi anime. That, and some of the artists were really talented. I really wish the person who did the art for Gundam 0083 stuck around for later series like G and Wing, or even 00. I also like the music more. The good songs tended to have more emotional energy ("Beyond the Time" from Char's Counterattack and "Violence of the Flame" from MD Geist to name a couple) compared to today's, but that's just me. tl;dr: I like anime from 80s and 90s more. Johan Liebert
Newer anime would qualify as being post-2000. Now, I'd like to point out that there were extremely crappy main characters from both old and new anime. I'd say the worst from pre-2000 would be Goku (from what I've watched). And then the worst from post-2000, out of what I've watched, would be Kirito from Sword Art Online. Both are extremely generic and boring, with very little personality to them. But, both eras have amazing characters in them as well. Edward Elric is one of my all-time favorite anime characters. As is Johan Liebert from Monster (although the manga was written in the 90's). Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop is also up there. And, don't ask me why, but I love Yusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho. I'd also like to point out the differences in quality with fight scenes. Dragon Ball Z had a four-hour fight, plus many that were nearly two hours, with too much dialogue and not enough fighting. Although, Naruto possibly suffers from that even more. But then anime like Fate/Zero and Attack on Titan have amazing fight scenes that don't last more than fifteen minutes. Although, Cowboy Bebop and Berserk were also the same way. And then English dubbing...well, that's very variable. Cowboy Bebop has my all-time favorite English dub. But Fullmetal Alchemist, Monster, and Code Geass were great dubs too. Shradow
I don't think that newer anime are of any better or wose just because a lot of them are adaptations and not originals. And this is just me, but I don't think fanservice necessarily detracts from a good series (No Game No Life, Kill la Kill, Monster Musume, etc.). In terms of quality I'd say older and newer anime have equal number of great and shitty stuff, it's like trying to compare Pokemon generations. Astolfo
Newer art styles are nicer in my opinion, and maybe things like levels of complexity in various things (like music, background, etc) might be better in modern anime, but I feel like all other factors (story/plot, characters, voice-acting, etc) have generally remained same. Both time periods have their goods and bads, although recent stuff might have some more fanservice and things meant to appeal to crowds.
