Konami Hall of Fame!

Well since any recent evidence I could find seems to all point towards Konami moving out of the gaming industry, I thought it might be fun to think back and reminisce on some of the better games Konami put out there. It doesn't seem likely that they'll be releasing anything of any worth after MGS5 anymore, as the company has recently been making multiple decisions that, at least from an outsiders perspective, appear to have no long term or short term benefit. However, this isn't a topic to discuss whether or not Konami's future is bright. Instead, we're here to remember their bright past.

To start off, I'm going to talk about Lunar Knights.

Lunar Knights felt like something of a hidden gem in the Konami game database. At least to me it did, since before I picked it up at GameStop several years ago, I nor anyone I knew at the time, had ever even heard of Lunar Knights. It was a light action game for the DS made in 2006, that was never really localized in North America until 2007 that had a very distinct Castlevania feel to it, but with a soundtrack and some aspects of the game that are very reminiscent of Cowboy Bepop. The plot was very involved in vampires, and revolved around Vampires, and took place in a world where vampires half conquered the human race by blocking out the sun. Thus, to purify these vampires, they defeat them, capture them, and launch them into space to where they can feel the full effects of the suns rays. Thus you have our two protagonists, Lucien and Aaron fighting against hordes of monsters and vampires in an attempt to restore the humans standing as the top dogs. Playing the game though was incredibly fun. While the plot's feeling was more akin to Castlevania, the gameplay felt like what Devil May Cry might have been like on the DS at the time. Which was a good feeling for me, as Devil May Cry is one of my favorite game franchises out there. The game was made by Hideo Kojima, who I'm sure we all know, and Kensuke Yoshitomi, who apparently made another game set in the same universe as Lunar Knights called Boktai.

Keep in mind, it's been a good 7+ years since I last played Lunar Knights though, so the mini plot synopsis is by no means a complete one, but if you really want to see what Lunar Knights is about, I'd recommend buying it, since there's really no reason not to. It's like $5 tops at any local GameStop now, and while not great, it is enjoyable to play while on long trips.

Don't they still have something in the arcade business?

Rhythm games. Lots, and lots of rhythm games. DDR, jubeat, SOUND VOLTEX, IIDX and some more I can't think of. Nearly any arcade in Japan you can think of has at least one of these in some form. And they're still makin' lots of money off it.

Anyway, to add something to this, I really liked the Gradius games, especially Gaiden. That game, and by extension, the whole series, has some pretty good music. They're still unfair as ever, and they are almost impossible to play if you don't know what you're doing, but they are amazingly fun.

dunno what Otomedius was all about though, that one was weird

I never actually played Gradius, but I heard it was a lot of fun. Maybe I'll look for a copy sometime when I have the spare money.

As another addition, this is also a Kojima game, but Zone of the Enders. Anyone who didn't play that, if you like Armored Core 4 and above, you'll like Zone of the Enders. It's a lot of fun to play and has a pretty gripping story as well. If you don't like mechs though, as I know a lot of people don't, then this probably isn't for you.
