I'm Sakura, the lead moderator of Custom Cards, Introductions and Questions & Help. Before you start making cards, make sure you read our section rules first and also know where to post your first cards. If you're unsure of the metagame (and a lot of new members do), best that you start off in Casual. Going into Advanced means that you know a little bit about what goes on nowadays, because you are graded on that to an extent. And yes, it is rather daunting for new members to be subjected to high standards off the bat, if you don't know what goes on.
