Top 5 OSTs

Thar

Recommended Posts

1. Sonic the Hedgehog - Every game leading up to Sonic & Knuckles has the best standing soundtracks in any franchise, in my opinion. Seriously, every track is its own trip through the epitome of 16 bit gaming, and it's SO catchy. I can't think of any track from these games that isn't worth listening to. It's so groovy, and considering Michael Jackson was involved in a good portion of it, it makes it that much better. Did I mention this is one of the most nostalgic games of my life? That certainly plays a crucial part in this listing. So gud!

2. Crash Bandicoot - Up to Twinsanity, this soundtrack may not have had the groove that Sonic had, but the synergy with the environment of the levels worked so well that they each felt so immersive to play that struggling through it just felt SO satisfying. While this wasn't the most graphically advanced era, back then as a kid it felt amazing to just run through the levels if not JUST for the themes of the level, which this music made THAT much better. Not only was this the first game series I've ever played, but it's the one that made 3D platforming my favorite gaming genre.

3. Toejam & Earl - I've never even touched this game, but after watching a playthrough of it on Game Grumps (and watching my boss play it during work once), I heard the soundtrack and I just HAD to give it a try. I was not disappointed. The groove was almost up to par with Sonic, and with such a limited number of tracks of work off of, it was just so catchy that I found myself wanting to play it several times but I never felt like it. So I figured the music was enough.

4. Final Fantasy - I was never into Final Fantasy, but for all I've seen through friends playing it, the game had one of the most epic soundtracks of any series, especially the later adaptations. Leading up to XIII, listening to certain tracks through this franchise was enough to get me choked up by how epic it was, and I'm not even nostalgic for them.

5. Metroid Prime - Twilight Princess almost took this spot, but after having Final Fantasy setting the standard for fantasy-themed music, Prime's sci-fi theme stood a league higher. Not only that, but Metroid was introduced to me before Zelda (I know, right?), so it means more to me in terms of music. I'm a much bigger Zelda fan, so if this were a matter of games, Zelda would win, but this is about music, so nyeh. Anyway, this music was immersion at its finest as I played it, even today. Every part of the world was very well synergized with the music, and I felt in touch with nature. That, and every boss battle felt like I was pumped with steroids, ready to take that fucker down!

In no real order because I don't care to rank them against each other.

  • Arc System Works' games(Guilty Gear and Blazblue). Badass rock and metal. Ishiwatari's a god at what he does. If I had to pick a single track then it's The Cat Attached to the Rust from GG Isuka.
  • Final Fantasy series. Some of their stuff(4 in particular) makes me nostalgic, and the ones that don't, I still love. Theme of Love is like the best shit ever by the way, they teach it to preschoolers in Japan... or so I hear.
  • Most of Atlus' stuff but in particular, Persona 3's, Digital Devil Saga's, and Nocturne's. Meguro's a god at what he does. Digital Devil Saga's Big Battle is my favorite track I suppose.
  • Falcom's Kiseki series has amazing rock songs that makes me real conflicted about whether I like them more than ASW's Ishiwatari. I'm tempted to go with Overdosing Heavenly Bliss as my favorite but, Inevitable Struggle was what pulled me into the series so I'll go with that(the Super Arrange version anyway).
  • The World Ends With You's OST, while I wouldn't pick that as my favorite, it sure is the closest runner-up after everything else I've listed. Sure, there are other tracks from other games I like a lot more but, as a whole, TWEWY and Ars Nosurge are my runner-up favorite OSTs, and since I've never played the latter I'm going with the former. The opening, Twister, stole my heart since the very first time I heard it.

2-99 abdicated for not coming close

Journey

Kid Icarus Uprising

Kingdom Hearts 2

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Others have mentioned the classics and/or big company names, so I won't list them (if I had to, it would be some mix of Shadow of the Colossus, Chrono Trigger, Okami, pick a Mana series game, pick a Zelda series game).

Instead, here's five soundtracks, click on the album cover for a handy listenable link. Frankly, all of the following should be considered classics. In particular, FEZ's and Journey's OSTs represent some of the most important video game music in years.

  1. Mega Man X Series -  Does this really need explaining?
  2. Phoenix Wright Series  -  Ones that really catch my eye are "Logic Chess ~ Endgame"  and "Lying Coldly," as well as all the Cornered Themes of course.
  3. Shadow of the Colossus  -  Not something I would just listen too, but hot damn in context this sets the mood like a champ.
  4. Gradius Series  -  Now I don't know how many people actually remember these, but they are some of my favorite games.  Gradius III had a kick ass soundtrack for a SNES game, and the Arranged versions are just so amazing.  I direct you to "In the Wind (Arranged)" to see what I mean, just look it up on youtube.
  5. Monster Hunter / Anything Sonic written by Crush 40  -  Crush 40 is love and life.  But Monster Hunter has been getting increasingly good with it's theme music for specific battles, especially in MH4U.  That Shagaru Magala Theme is probably the best Elder Dragon theme I've ever heard in the series.

In no particular order
Zone of the Enders
In my opinion this game has one of the most killer soundtracks
Star Fox
Aside from Slippy constantly being in trouble, a very good game with a nice soundtrack
Silent Hill
Now I'm not one for horror games, but I've played a few of the Silent Hill games and the soundtracks are amazing
Halo
All the Halo games thus far have great soundtracks in my opinion
Mortal Kombat
An odd choice I know, but there's something about MK9's soundtrack

In order of most recent listening (though not in particular order of ranking)

Every Armored Core game (though Silent Line is somewhere around the top if I had to choose)

Ace Combat (from 2 onwards)

The Touhou series

Radiant Silvergun

Every rhythm game ever

A notable mention would be Edge, except it's really hard to find the soundtrack for the game anywhere. Still a rad soundtrack though.

I see no listing of Eternal Sonata which fortifies its status as an underappreciated game. While the gameplay may not be superior, the game has had all its effort put into a good OST. One might not consider it totally original since I think all or most of the tracks are either Chopin's pieces or his pieces with some effects/aggrandized to fit particular moments in the game.

The first example that I can think of is how they turned an etude into a final boss theme:

I will be honest and say right now that most Genesis and Super Nintendo music does not hold up today.... Considering that most of the soundtracks in those days were Midi, they sound awful. Here is my Top 5 in no real order with a taster from each Game.

F-Zero GX: Not only one of the fastest racing games ever, F-Zero GX had a kickass soundtrack that was very varied. Not to mention the Character Theme Tunes (some were a bit cheesy but Captain Falcon's theme was awesome)

Castlevania Symphony of the Night: My first Castlevania game with a fantastic Soundtrack. Every tune suited the area it was in perfectly. Oh and this game is not a miserable little pile of secrets ^^

The Guided Fate Paradox: I am sure a lot of you haven't even heard of this game. It's a neat little Dungeon Crawler on the PS3 where you are God (Yep God). You need to guide the people of Earth to their Destiny. The Soundtrack itself is a bit Meh but there was a lot of Vocal Tracks which set the mood perfectly.

The Katamari Franchise: Couldn't choose a game specificly but the whole of the Katamari Franchise has some weird, wacky and cute music. Also there is a LOT of Vocal Tracks for your people out there who love Japanese Vocals.

Final Fantasy XIII-2: The game may not be great but the Soundtrack is gorgeous.... Almost every area in the Game has the Soundtrack that also has Vocals. The best part is when Enemies appear, it gets all upbeat.

And there you have it! I wanted to list more but here is my Top 5.

FUCK I FORGOT FEZ

Also I incorrectly said Metal Gear Solid 3. I meant 2. I mean have you heard the main theme?

Also it's worth mentioning "Dogs of War" from Medal of Honor: European Assault

I'm changing one of mine, replace Chrono Trigger with Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The trailer for Mankind Divided has reminded me that Michael McCann does some of the greatest video music ever. I'm actually gonna say this is my number 1 favorite OST.

And Asura's Wrath changed to Okami.

The Souls games also have fantastic music. Dark Souls has my favorite final boss theme:

Speaking about Souls:

One of the best video game soundtrack (along with SCV) ever made.

Honorable mention to just this song:

MK8 does have a sweet soundtrack all around, but yea, that one is amazing. Also love that Nintendo is putting out live performances of some pieces since they did a handful for Xenoblade recently too.
