Part of me thinks I could've been killed earlier this night

I was working a closing shift as a grocery store janitor. One of the last tasks of the night for me was taking out the trash for two bins that I forgot about as I was about to clock out. Thing is, the back door leading to the garbage bin was locked with the alarm armed, so I decided not to bother the MOD and walked around the store building to get to it. As I rounded the corner, there was a red pick-up truck with 4 dudes, two of them digging through the dumpster. The moment, they saw me, they scrambled, but they saw that I wasn't swayed by their presence as I walked towards the dumpster without a care in the world, but they drove away anyway.

Thing is, this is the kind of situation where I might've actually been in danger. I was warned by the MOD that I shouldn't walk around the store without his supervision for this very reason, but I had no reason to worry. Still, I can't help but imagine the scenario where the dumpster divers actually felt threatened and pulled guns on me. Heck, as I was pushing the bin that held the trash I was taking out, it was making so much noise that I couldn't hear what one of them opened the door to say to me before closing it again as the truck took off. Part of me thought it was a threat for when I'd encounter them the same way again, but I don't see any reason to believe that's what he said.

I'm not worried, but hypothetically, I'm so glad it didn't turn out for the worse.

If there's any discussion related to this, this is the place to have it.

Well I think I could mention how our minds tend to ignore dangerous situation, which is the opposite of how we're originally wired.

It's strange, because in some cases our natural instincts are still there but then there's cases like this.

I have similar stories from working at Wal-Mart, when I'd have to go around the back of the store for something. Except in those cases we aren't warned not to. In fact, at night, we were encouraged to go around back where no one was and the lights are dim, in order to pick up stray carts people leave back there.

Most of the time I went back without a care but thinking now, it would've been easy for something to happen.

Oh gosh, I'd hate to work at Walmart for that reason alone.

Though the worst part about that night was that the store I work at is right next to a forest, where it's said to be the most concentrated area for homeless people. I've dealt with numerous people from there back when I worked as a cashier, but ever since they were banned from the property, I haven't had to worry about it.

Though there's this one guy who comes in often that holds up a cardboard sign on the divider of the highway that borders the plaza. What infuriates me about him is that he has a job, owns a house, and has a bike which he rides 2 miles to get here, and all he gets is beer. I've seen him get denied a purchase several times and he would always complain despite what the law clearly states.

Luckily if I'm working lates, I have 2 guys working working with me, so am rarely outside at night on my own (bar the back of the shop which is a small semi-closed off alley (I say semi we have netting to keep the pigeons out, but bar that it can be accessed) and only when I quickly add rubbish to the cages). I have had to stand outside the front at about 11pm, but it's a 'main' road with a few people around at all times mainly wandering to the nearby clubs and pubs or the hotel.

Luckily our biggest threat is Pigeons making it into the Shop.

That reminds me. There's not a forest by Walmart but there is an area with trees. I remember one day at night looking over there and seeing several hooded people just standing around. That was...interesting.

There was also the person who was sitting on a bench one night and then I passed by a car and they were gone....

Weird things happen when you work at night.

  • 2 weeks later...

I work at night all the time so I know how you feel. Whenever you're outside and see a shadow or a vehicle, there's always that slight paranoia that they aren't good people. Or something like that.

I remember a white van out one night and I refused to leave the building...until I realized it was the school's boy scout group and was nothing to fear.
