The Amazing Avian
So you have your generic high fantasy setting with like an evil overlord or whatever and a rebel army and a badass leader and wizards and all that, but the story doesn't actually focus on them. Instead, it deals with an officially defunct but still operating merchant guild who keeps trade open between the countries through itself, however because of the war, crossing the border is illegal and punishable by death under grounds of treason or espionage. Because of the risk, prices on imported products have increased, so the members of the guild see it as a potentially very rewarding venture. Bring in the products to sell and you're rich, get caught and you're dead and enough members of the guild have been caught in the act that information on any member is rewarded and turning in a member yields a hefty reward. Because of this, there is a very high amount of distrust among the members, each of them fearing the others might sell them out for the bounties. The protagonist and deuteragonist are a relatively low ranking member of the guild who mostly deals in transporting products and leans more towards talking his way out of trouble, and his bodyguard, a gruff and wary mercenary who really only cares about the money he's being paid, but is very loyal and will not be bought by others so long as he is being treated fairly by his employer. That's all I got so far.
mitchermitcher
I'd read that if the fantasy exposition isn't too much(Economic exposition is cool though). Would you aim towards a more episodic approach with this concept, or try for a grander, more connected storyline?
Aix
As a Spice and Wolf fan, I can only say yes to an economic fantasy. The idea has potential, I'll give it that.
mitchermitcher
Honestly it reminds me a bit more of Maoyuu than Spice and Wolf, being a high fantasy with an overlord and all. But yeah, if you ever decide to work on this seriously, I'll be waiting.
.Rooster
The super overlords do still have a great deal of power over the story, right?
The Amazing Avian
I'd read that if the fantasy exposition isn't too much(Economic exposition is cool though). Would you aim towards a more episodic approach with this concept, or try for a grander, more connected storyline? I feel like a mix of both, kind of like Xena. The story is going somewhere, but with stops along the way. The super overlords do still have a great deal of power over the story, right? It honestly doesn't matter much. I mean they can do things, but it's mostly going to be about the business.
