AVATAR:

ELEMENTAL DYSTROPHY
The year is 540 AG.  For hundreds of thousands of years, elemental users have come naturally to the world, long after the age of the Lion-Turtle.  They are called benders, and can usually freely manipulate a special element in which they are gifted with upon birth.  Born to tribes of gifted water, fire, earth, and air benders, humans have managed to uncover other stray elemental types, and have developed off-tree elemental techniques.  These include, metal, lava, blood, lightning, and among the most powerful, energy bending.  These elemental arts have shaped the world, in both chaos and peace.  Some use the arts for good, to better the lives of many, or to aid those in distress.  Others seek to use the arts for evil, killing their foes and preying on the innocent.  Regardless, the use of bending has skyrocketed over the past millennium, as more and more benders are born.

Bending has become the norm, used in restaurants for cooking and cleaning, or in classrooms for everyday studies.  The human race has become lazy, relying on their bending for even the simplest of things, and abusing their abilities.  And while the spirit world tends to provide energies to the world to continue its bending, the connection between both realms is slowly wavering.  In this circumstance, the world has begun to age and fester at a rapid rate.  Because of the lack of connection between the Spirit and Overworlds, using bending has become a great strain on people in general, causing a painful and powerful disease to overtake them:  Elemental Dystrophy.

Over time, because humans have relied on bending so much, they’ve lost touch with simple hand work, and lack in labor and sciences.  Benders now struggle to perform simple bending techniques, because they were not taught the proper way to bend.  Elemental Dystrophy, in this time, has caused the deaths of hundreds of people just in Republic City alone.  Now, places around the globe are seeing the effects of Elemental Dystrophy in full force.

The disease is developed when a bender exerts too much force in an attempt to bend an element.  It will always begin in the feet of the bender in question, and will rapidly work its way up to the brain of the bender.  Typically, Elemental Dystrophy first claims the tibia—a bone located in the ankle—of a bender, costing them their ability to walk.  Some have escaped with a starting loss of fingers or toes, but a cure has not been discovered.

And in the midst of this chaos, the world’s savior, the Avatar, has not been seen in more than two hundred years.  The bloodline of the Avatar is believed to have died, because of the events that currently transpire throughout the world.  Now, those who lack bending powers are attempting to heal the sick benders afflicted with Elemental Dystrophy.  This, however, has resulted in disastrous accidents.  Any attempt to perform surgery has resulted in powerful expulsion of the bender’s element(s) instantaneously, killing the victim and all of those immediately around them.  Current elements cannot be used to cure the sick, and only result in worsening the condition of the victim.  Herbal medicines appear to have no effect on Elemental Dystrophy either, being rendered utterly useless.

Despite this, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as not every living bender is afflicted with E.D.  Some able benders have begun to work on an inhibitor to the disease, slowing it down by as long as one year, and allowing the bender afflicted to continue their normal way of life as best as possible.  In addition, a type of man-made bending tool—the Single Elemental Discharge Glove--has been created, temporarily allowing a user to bend a single element of their choice.  This however does come with a very low chance of E.D., and some have declined to use the device.  While drawing data from the S.E.D. devices, scientists have been able to further develop the machine, developing elemental syringes that fit the glove and allow more uses of the element chosen.

Attempts to mix elements on S.E.U. devices has caused a more powerful form of E.D., and usually kills the victim in a matter of days.  And though some are satisfied with helping sick benders, others see the situation as a sign.  They call the widespread E.D. a reforming disease, ridding the world of lazy benders, and giving it back to the great Lion-Turtles that once provided bending to the world.  A crazed group of maniacs, the Anti-Bender Alliance, continue to egg on average humans without bending, causing some doctors and scientists to turn away benders, and others to even pick on and kill benders on sight.  Knowing the benders fear E.D., normal humans can freely pick on and hunt benders, without fear of repercussion.  And now, benders attempt to unite for their self-defense, and to look for a cure.

You are one of six humans equipped with a S.E.D. Glove.  You are desperate for a cure, as the Elemental Dystrophy disease claims the lives of many.  The Avatar is nowhere to be found, and an insane posse of anti-benders is always breathing down your neck, urging you to either join them, or be killed.  Your journey begins in Republic City, where afflicted council member Jasper Janook has pleaded with you for your assistance.

“The A.B.A. is assaulting Central Republic City.  There are women and children down there, playing among the old spirit vines,” Orthro says to your team.  “Please, dispel them while we continue to search for—“

“Don’t you dare say it,” says a man from behind your team.  He steps up towards the council member’s desk, and points a daring mechanical finger at the council man.  “We don’t talk about the Avatar.  Period.”  A man with a mechanical arm continues pointing at the councilman, and begins berating him.  “You recruited us for this, we’ll do this our own way.  The rest of you benders--you can keep looking for your ghost, but we’re gonna find a cure,” the man says.  His name is Udal, and he has taken charge of the expedition for the search of a cure for Elemental Dystrophy.  Your journey begins in Central Republic city, where you will meet with the A.B.A. for the first time.  “Let’s go,” Udal orders.  Your team storms out of the councilman’s office, and down sixteen floors, into the heart of Republic City.  But you won't be there very long.  Something drastic awaits you.

All YCM rules apply.  Please note advanced clause at all times.  Also, no godmodding, powerplays, or anything of the like.  Posts should be relatively nice in length, but always refer to the advanced clause if you're not sure.  Upon finding a co-host, he/she and I will have the final say in regards to what goes in the role-play.  Limited acceptance.

This story is non-cannon.  Korra and Aang did exist, but will have no part in the story except that in history, they are known.  The story will being in Republic City, but it will not remain a central part of the story for long.  After a few introductory posts, having your characters get to know each other, and the like, the setting will change dramatically.  I took the liberty of having a very plain map of the upcoming setting done.  It is incomplete, but will be filled gradually as the story goes on.  Here is the basic map.

As not to spoil anything, I've refrained from having the map marked.  But it will be marked as the story progresses.

• Travel has become a struggle, as benders freely bend in the streets to transport themselves, destroying roads and property, causing cars to become worthless.  Train travel is nearly non-existent, as metal benders use rails freely, and tend to destroy trains that get in their way.  Some air travel is still possible, but with benders littering the skies as well, it is dangerous, and extremely expensive.
 • Elemental Dystrophy - A powerful disease caused by putting too much stress on the body through elemental bending.  Symptoms include weakened bending, headaches when elemental bending, and jagged purple scars running over the surface of the skin where veins would be.  The pain is very intense, and the first muscles in the body that usually begin to waste away, begin in the ankles and feet.  Elemental Dystrophy is classified as a disease, and is not contagious.  It causes the blood of the effected bender to change color from red to purple, almost as if they are starved of oxygen.  The blood becomes extremely toxic, and when exposed to air, ignites in flame.
 • Technology is very stagnant.  It had become forsaken in favor of bending, and is not very common.  Mechanics are a rare sight, and things like radios and satellites are valued highly.
 • The Avatar is no where to be found.  Adventurers have scoured the world for more than two hundred years, and have not found the Avatar.
 • Benders are seen in a dark light, and are not widely accepted anymore.  It is because of them that the world is in chaos.
 • Udal is the only natural bender on your team.  He previously lost his arm to Elemental Dystrophy, but with a stroke of luck and quick reaction, he cut his arm off at the source of the E.D.  A bit of restructuring allowed him to keep his muscles working, but a tinge of E.D. does remain within him.  His arm is entirely mechanical, and very powerful.
 • Councilman Orthro has requested your help.  He will be in touch as often as he can, for as long as he can, assuming E.D. doesn't kill him.
 • I have quite a few surprises regarding the elements, so be sure to play with them often.

Quote:  "Let's end this quickly.  There are things I wanna do.  For me.."

Name:  Udal Cho

Age:  33

Description:  A scraggly, older man.  With a full beard and jet black hair, Udal resembles a fatherly type.  He has tanned skin, and what appear to be scars from various tussles in his life.  Marked on his chest and face, he stands out from a crowd.  Udal is six feet and three inches tall, with a fairly muscular build.  He does not have any tattoos, and rarely wears a shirt.  He prefers his chest to bare "nothing but my weight."  He does however wear torn gray shorts, ripped at the knees.  He works in them, and they are usually the only shorts he wears.

Personality:  Udal is very forward.  He is blunt, outspoken, and will not hold his tongue.  He doesn't care if you are a man or woman, nor whether you have a great seat of power.  He cares only about his goals.  Udal is very selfish, and holds a great dislike towards benders.  He views them as outcasts, even those among his family.

Biography:  Udal is a natural metal bender.  He was born and raised in Republic City, and is one of it's few remaining mechanics.  Using his skills he has fixed and repaired cars, planes, and even has a bit of familiarity with boats and planes.  After losing his arm to E.D., Udal engineered his own mechanical arm, with a powerful hand and joints.  He was born to a family of mechanics, with only one person in his family being a metal bender for more than three generations.  His bending appears most likely to come from his father's line of family.  His great grandfather was a metal bender, and his father is an earth bender.

Despite being a natural bender, Udal hates this.  He views himself as a freak, and regrets being able to bend an element.  Saying that, he only bends when it is absolutely necessary.  Udal is a hands on guy who prefers to do things without bending.  He bends if it means saving a life, not saving time.  Even as a mechanic, he rarely uses his bending.  His family finds him odd, but they do not scold him for rejecting his gift.  It is simply the type of person he is.  When Elemental Dystrophy first appeared, he was tending to his daily duties, when he found his father collapsed in their workshop.

"Dad?  Dad!" he said running over to the older man.  "I'm fine," he assured Udal.  But judging by the fact that his legs were collapsed atop one another, Udal knew this was not true.  "Here, help me up," his father requested, but that was not possible.  Upon attempting to stand, there was a dagger like pain in his legs and feet, causing the father to cry out.

"My legs!" he screamed.  Udal rushed to slide up the pants legs of his father, to discover a horrendous sight.  His ankles were being eaten away from the inside, out.  The muscle tissue had been utterly destroyed, and his veins were an odd shade of purple.  The purple ran up his legs, and seemed to climb up to his torso.  "What were you doing!?' Udal asked, still horrified at what he was seeing.  "Never mind, we gotta get you to a hospital."

And Udal did rush  his father to a hospital, but to no avail.  It was packed with other victims of this strange disease, with various purple veins swelling in their faces and legs.  When his father was finally seen, the doctors could already tell what the problem was.

"You've been bending too much," the doctor said quickly.  Udal remained silent, pain and anger in his face.  "There's nothing we can do at this time," he doctor continued.  'We've tried everything.  Open surgery, water bending, herbs and common medicines.  Nothing has proven effective.  In fact, bending has only made the issue worse, and threatens our doctors now as well.  I'm very sorry."

Udal stormed out, carrying his father.  On the way home, Udal confronted his dad.  "I told you.  Nothing good will come of bending.  There's a reason there hasn't been an Avatar around.  But you didn't heed my warning."  His father said nothing.  In fact, the man's breathing had become shallow as Udal carried him home.  "What are you doing?  Why are you breathing like that?"  But Udal's father could not speak.  He was dead shortly after they left the hospital.  "Dad?  Dad!?  DAD!!"  He fell to his knees, weeping as his father had died in his arms.  It was a week's time later, when Udal would also be affected by E.D., despite rarely using his bending.  Slicing off his arm, and creating a mechanical one, Udal made it a point to find someone in power over Republic City, perhaps to explain exactly what was going on.

Upon confronting Councilman Orthro, he took it upon himself to gather others and search for a cure.  Of course, "they can't be benders.  I won't deal with them."

Chosen Element S.E.D. Glove:  None.  Udal will only use his arm for bending.

Skills and Specilizations:  Udal is a professional mechanic.  He knows cars and planes very well.  He has some experience with planes and boats as well.

Greatest Desire During the Quest:  To get rid of Elemental Dystrophy.  Nothing irks Udal more than knowing that this disease not only took his father from him, but threatens him and the rest of Republic City as well.
