Yuma's (Double Up) Chance (My First Attempt at a Good Story)

Yuma and Astral had been there before. Many times before, in fact, but it had been some time after Yuma defeat the Barians, so why he was back there was unknown. “Yuma… Why are we here?” The blue figure floated over Yuma’s head as he approached the large door ahead of him. “I… have no idea…” Yuma eventually reached the door, then looked down at his Emperor’s Key. It still shone brightly, even within all of the darkness. A large booming voice started to speak. “Yuma. Astral. The Barians have regained their power.” Both Yuma and Astral were shocked.

“The Barians have returned?!” Astral exclaimed.

 

“Indeed,” the voice boomed. “In fact, they were never gone… Yuma… Ast-” suddenly, the voice stopped and the door burst into flames. “I am not just a door and a voice. I am something… More… I will use the last of my power to help you two… I will be able to grant you… A new power…” The voice stopped. Yuma and Astral stared at each other. All of a sudden, the door collapsed, launching Yuma and Astral backwards. Yuma sat up, and behind the door was a silhouette, which was walking towards the two companions. “That fool had me chained up for so long behind that door that I almost forgot how to walk. Lucky he let his guard down after thinking you fools defeated all the Barians.” The silhouette started to become clearer. “Yuma Tsukumo. Duel me.” Yuma scanned the figure.

“Astral! It’s another Barian!” Astral gasped and looked at the figure. There was no doubt about it. The looks, the stance, the attitude. “Yuma! We must duel him! It’s the only way we’ll make it out of here!” Yuma nodded.

“Fine then!” He said. “I accept your challenge!” After setting up his Duel Disk and D-Gazer, Yuma looked towards the Barian. “Who are you?!” He shouted. The Barian didn’t respond, but instead fabricated a transparent Duel Disk out of thin air, and his blue eyes became a bright orange colour. Both duelists drew 5 cards from their deck, then simultaneously yelled “DUEL!”

 

“I’m going first. Draw! I play the Continuous Spell Card, Xyz Form! This card allows me to Xyz Summon using monsters in my hand, but when I Xyz Summon a monster, I lose half my Life Points.”

“I see. Giving up Life Points to Summon powerful monsters using cards in the hand.”

“I overlay the 3 Level 6 Monsters in my hand, Caius the Shadow Monarch, Kuraz the Light Monarch, and Raiza the Wind Monarch, to Xyz Summon! Appear before me, my undefeatable beast!”

“Here it comes Astral! Be ready for anything!”

“Number 108! Grimm, the Death Monarch!”

A large beast appeared before Yuma and Astral. It was so large that it blocked out everything behind it, except for the Barian Duelist, who could be seen through a small gap in its legs.

“Another over-hundred Number?! But how?!”

“This isn’t the time to worry about that, Astral! It’s got 3000 attack points!”

“The effect of Xyz Form activates. I lose half my Life Points due to Xyz Summoning from my hand.” A shadow holding a scythe appeared out of the card and slashed at the Barian, who did not even flinch.

“The effect of Grimm, the Death Monarch activates! When it is Xyz Summoned, I can add a Rank-Up Magic card from my Deck to my hand, but I can’t Xyz Summon for the rest of the turn. I’ll add Rank-Up Magic Barian’s Force to my hand! I’ll set one card and end my turn there.”

 

Yuma was shocked. The mysterious Barian enemy had already Xyz Summoned a new over-hundred Number, got a Rank-Up Magic card in his hand, and halved his Life Points, all on the first turn of the Duel. “You look tough… This’ll be fun. My turn, Draw!” Yuma grinned. “I Summon Gogogo Golem, then activate the effect of Kagetokage in my hand! When I Normal Summon a Level 4 monster, I can Special Summon it to the field." Yuma already thought victory was within his grasp. "Now I overlay my 2 Level 4 monsters. With these two monsters I build the Overlay Network! I Xyz Summon! Appear before me, Number 39: Utopia!” The warrior appeared in front of Yuma, and looked ready to fight for and protect him. “Now Utopia, attack Grimm!” The yellow and white warrior pulled out a sword and started it charge at the giant beast.

“Ha. Fool! Did you forget that the monster with less attack points is destroyed?”

“No, not at all! I activate the Quick-Play Spell, Ego Boost! This increases Utopia’s attack points by 1000, which means it can topple your 3000 attack point beast!”

“Trap activate! Magic Jammer! By discarding a card I can negate the activation of an opponent’s Spell Card! I will choose to discard Alexandrite Dragon.”

 “Damn! I use Utopia’s effect! When a monster declares an attack, I can detach one Xyz Material from Utopia to negate that attack.” One of Utopia’s Overlay Units was absorbed, and its sword faded away. “I set one card and end my turn.”

 

“My turn. Draw! I activate Grimm’s effect! By using one Overlay Unit I can Special Summon a Monarch monster from my hand, and that Summon is treated as a Tribute Summon.” The giant monster grabbed and crushed one of its overlay units, then watched as another monster fabricated beside it. “I Summon Thestalos, the Firestorm Monarch! When Thestalos is Tribute Summoned I can discard a card from my opponent’s hand at random. I choose the card on my left!”

“Damn in! That card was Gagaga Magician.” Yuma clearly looked stressed out.

“Perfect! If the discarded card was a monster, my opponent takes 100 damage for each of the monster’s levels. That means you take 400 damage!” A large flame erupted around Yuma as his Life Points dropped to 3600. “Oh, but I’m far from done! I activate Rank-Up Magic Barian’s Force!”

 

The card was radiating power. Yuma could feel its strength emanating from it. “Astral. There’s something different about this guy…”

“Rank-Up Magic Barian’s Force lets me Summon a Chaos Number using a monster I already control! I use Number 108: Grimm, the Death Monarch to rebuild the Overlay Network!” The giant beast flew up into the air while rolling around, and becoming a large black ball. “Chaos Xyz Change!” The ball disappeared, then suddenly a green sphere emanated from where the ball had vanished. “Now rise upon this ungrateful world and crush it with all of your might! Number Chaos 108: Disaster, the Grimm Monarch!”

“Yuma… Just look at the size of this monster!” The monster was at least ten times the size of its weaker form. As it grew Yuma and Astral couldn’t keep up with the rate it was growing at.

“H-How are we going to… defeat this?!”

“I activate Disaster’s effect. By detaching an Overlay Unit, I can look at each player’s hand, then Special Summon one Level 5 or higher monster among them.”

“S-Special Summoning from MY hand?!” Yuma revealed the only card in his hand to the mysterious Barian.

“Now I Special Summon, to my side of the field, the Dododo Warrior in YOUR hand!” A masked warrior burst out of the ground, and got into a battle stance. “Now, Disaster! Wipe out Number 39! Attack!”

“We’ll use Utopia to negate the attack!”

“Wrong! While Disaster has Grimm as an Xyz Material, all of my opponent’s monster’s effects are negated during my turn!” Astral looked over at Yuma’s side of the field. “Yuma, the trap!”

“Right! I activate the trap card Half Unbreak! This stops a monster on the field from being destroyed by battle this turn, and all damage I take from battles this turn is halved.” A bubble surrounded Utopia at the giant beast towering above it stomped on it with a monstrous foot.

“GAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

“Yuma!”

 

 

Yuma’s Life Points: 3050

“I set one card and end my turn.”

“Who are you?!” Yuma shouted. No response was given.

“Yuma, we aren’t going to get any words out of them. We must keep duelling.”

“Tch. Fine. It’s our turn anyway!”

“Yuma! There’s no way we’ll be able to defeat this guy while separated. Let’s transform into ZEXAL!”

“Alright Astral, let’s do it!” As Yuma clasped Astral’s hand, they both shot off into the sky. “Astral,”

“Yuma!”

“We’ll now…”

“Overlay!” As both of the figures flew through the sky, they joined together, spun around and smashed into the ground. The golden figure that emerged looked like a combination of both Yuma and Astral. “ZEXAL!”

“Our turn, draw!!!! We play Xyz Treasure from our hand!” Out of the card came three black energy beams. Two of them flew over into each of the Xyz Monsters, and the last one attached to Yuma’s Deck. “This card lets us draw a card for each monster on the field. Draw! Utopia, attack Number 108’s Chaos form!” The warrior dashed upwards as it held out its sword, once again ready to strike. “We’ll once again negate Utopia’s attack, using its effect, and spending another Xyz Material.” The sword once again vanished from Utopia’s hands. “Now we activate Double or Nothing from our hand! When a monster’s attack is negated, it can attack again, and attack points are doubled during that battle! Go, Utopia! Rising Sun Twin Blade Slash!” Utopia grew in size, to half the size of the Chaos Number, then quickly slashed at it. After the strike there was a large explosion. Once all the dust cleared, both monsters were still standing there, and Utopia had shrunk back down to its normal size. “But how?! We clearly should have destroyed that monster! Utopia’s attack points became 5000 during that battle. It should have destroyed that Number, since it only has 3600 attack points.”

“I’ll tell you why. Because I activated the Continuous Trap, Chaos Denial.”

“When Chaos Denial is activated, it stops all battle damage to my monster, prevents it from being destroyed, and you take all the damage I would have taken. Now, eat 1400 damage!”

“No, Yuma!”

“Gwahhhh!”

 

ZEXAL’s Life Points: 1650

“But that’s not all. When a monster attacks, my opponent has to send a Chaos Number from their Extra Deck to their Graveyard!”

“W-What?! Tch, I’ll send Utopia Ray V to the Graveyard. Then I’ll set a card and end my turn.”

“Hmm… My turn, draw!” Darkness emanated from the mysterious character. He was visibly growing stronger, and the grin on his face was becoming larger very quickly. “I activate Xyz Treasure, which’ll let me draw two cards.”

“He has the same card as us!”

“I’ll now activate Xyz Form again. Using Mobius the Frost Monarch and Delg the Dark Monarch in my hand, I create an overlay network! Now, I Xyz Summon! Come before me, robotic slayer of the hideous beasts! Monster Terminator!”

“Then, due to Xyz Form, I lose half of my life points. Also, Monster Terminator gains 200 attack points for each Xyz Material it has.”

“Yuma, if we take this hit, we’ll be in big trouble! It has 3100 attack!”

“Now, my robotic champion, attack! Final Termination!” The large gun wielding beast charged forward while firing at Utopia. “Additionally, when I destroy your monster, I can detach an Xyz Material from Terminator to banish all the cards in your Graveyard, so you won’t even be able to revive Utopia if you make it past these attacks!”

“Trap, go now! Impenetrable Attack! This card makes it so that Utopia can’t be destroyed this turn.”

“So what? You still take damage! Also, because of Chaos Denial, you must send a Chaos monster from your Extra Deck to the Graveyard.”

“I’ll send… Utopia Ray Victory… to the Gra- GAHHH” Yuma stood up. “Yuma, watch out!”

“Now, Disaster, attack!”

“I… Send… Utopia Ra- GWAHHH!!!!!!”

“Then, since you don’t have any more Chaos monsters to send to the Graveyard, Chaos Denial is destroyed.”

 

ZEXAL’s Life Points: 50

“Yuma Tsukumo… You are just as pathetic as your weakling father.”

“F-Father… Wea-kling…” Yuma slowly stood up. “My Father is not a weakling!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ASTRAL!”

“Yuma!”

“I’m feeling the flow! Let’s… SHINING…”

“DRAW!”

“Yuma… Utopia’s newest power has awakened within your Extra Deck… The card you drew will assist you…”

“Yuma… That’s the door’s voice!”

“A-And my Extra Deck!” Yuma’s face once again became serious, and focused on the duel. “We’ll use Utopia to… Chaos Xyz Change!”

“Impossible! I got rid of all of the Chaos Numbers from your Extra Deck!!”

“Wrong! A new power has been created, and it will help us achieve victory! Reveal your newest form to us, Number Chaos 39, Utopia Lancer!!”

That 'pathetic door' you were talking about just saved us from demise! We’ll equip ZEXAL Weapon – Effect Punisher to Utopia Lancer!”

The monster attached itself to the new red form of Utopia, and became its wings.

“When we equip this card to Utopia, all other monster effects are negated!”

“Ha! So what?! You still won't be able to take me down!"

“When Effect Punisher uses its negation effect, Utopia gains 300 attack points for each effect negated. Four monster effects were negated, so Utopia Lancer’s attack rises to 3700!”

“This can’t be!”

“Utopia Lancer, attack Disaster the Grimm Monarch! Rising Sun Negation Lancing Slash!!!!!”

“Then we activate Utopia Lancer’s special effect! When our Life Points are below 1000 and Utopia Lancer battles, I can detach an Xyz Material from Lancer to make your monster’s attack and defense points… ZERO.”

“N-N-NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

ZEXAL’s Life Points: 50

The mysterious Barian flew up into the air, then dropped onto the ground. Yuma and Astral separated back into their original forms. Yuma immediately ran over to the Barian.

“What did you say about my father?! How do you know him?”

“Your father… was a coward…” The Barian didn’t change his expression.

“What do you mean?!” Yuma shouted. He demanded an answer.

“You’ll find out soon enough.” Suddenly, the Barian’s Number re-materialized and picked him up, then both disappeared.

 

Yuma shot out of his hammock, at landed on the floor with a loud thud. “Astral… was that real?”

“I’m afraid so, Yuma.”

It took Yuma a moment to realize what had just happened. “W-Wait. Astral?! You’re back!” Yuma started to cry a little bit as he hugged the blue ghost.

“Yes Yuma, I am. Though… I’m not sure why… Do you have any idea who that Barian might be? He did say something about your father, after all.”

“Well…” Yuma thought deep and hard at the image of the Barian. “He did look like Durbe, but that’s about it.” After the two sat quietly for a small while Yuma heard the familiar chime of a feminine voice. “Yuma! Heloo-oo!” Yuma made his way downstairs quickly.

“Kotori! You’ll never guess who came back!” She gasped as she looked behind Yuma.

“A-Astral?! No way! How? Why?”

“We both have no idea either, Kotori.” Kotori stood there for a while, before suddenly exclaiming:

“Ah Yuma! I was out shopping when I saw Kaito flying around through the sky on Orbital 7. I called out to him to say hello, and when I did he asked me to take you over to his and V’s lab. They said they found some rare cards that are really important!”

“Yuma, we’d better go. He might has found one of those cards. Like the one we duelled against in our dreams.”

 

 

“Yuma, I’ve been expecting you. You too, Astral.” Astral looked at Kaito with a confused look.

“How could you expect me to be here?”

“Kotori did tell you that we found some rare cards, correct? They are One-Of-A-Kind, in fact. Now think back to the Numbers. Each one is One-Of-A-Kind, and you came to this world alongside them. I expected the same thing to happen this time.” Astral thought for a moment before responding.

“Are the cards you found new Numbers?”

“No… Yuma. Do you remember our first duel?” Yuma nodded. “I used a spell card in that duel called Polymerization. It allowed me to Summon a Fusion monster by combining two monsters in my hand.” Yuma nodded once again.

“Of course! How could I forget a duel like that?”

“Good. Duel me!” Yuma was shocked by the given request, but quickly gained control of his startled expression.

“S-S-Sure Kaito! If it’s t-to test out the new cards!”

“Chris, go get the cards from Orbital 7. He’ll be near the computers.”

“I’ll be right back. You two get ready for the duel in the meantime.” Yuma and Kaito each set up their Duel Disks and Yuma put on his D-Gazer. Chris came back a moment later holding a Deck, whose cards had a different backing to the regular ones. Kaito fitted them into his Duel Disk.

“Kaito, are you ready?!”

“Of course I am, Yuma!”

“DUEL!”

“I’ll be taking the first turn, and I’ll begin by Summoning Ganbara Knight in Attack Position. Then I’ll activate Zerozerock, the Continuous Spell!” Many small brown bricks appeared in front of Ganbara Knight. “You won’t be able to attack my zero attack point monsters while Zerozerock is on the field. I’ll set card and end my turn.”

“Yuma. Time to show you this deck’s strengths! My turn, I draw! I Summon Elemental HERO Bubbleman to my side of the field, then activate my Quick-Play Spell Bubble Shuffle. When I play this card, my Bubbleman and one of my opponent’s monsters are switched into Defence Position. After that, my Bubbleman is sacrificed!” The blue warrior became surrounded by a swarm of bubbles, then evaporated with them soon after. “That isn’t all. Next, I can Special Summon an Elemental HERO from my hand. Come out, my Level 7 saviour, the Neo-Spacian glory! Elemental HERO Neos!” The bubbles returned, and with them came a white, human-like figure with blue and red streaks all over its body.

“Yuma, what is that?!”

“I was about to ask you the same thing Astral! Though we should focus less on what it is and more on its 2500 attack points!”

“Allow me to explain. Several days ago we came in contact with life forms from… Another dimension.”

“Another dimension?! Then what was the deal with-”

“They told us that people of their kind were planning to invade our world, and that these cards could help us stop them by show them that we share a group of cards with them.”

“No way! Kaito! Last night, in my dream, I duelled someone.”

“Who was it?” The look on Kaito’s face transformed from knowledge into confusion.

“It looked like… a Barian. They even had an eighth Over-Hundred Number.”

“W-What?! Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?! Chris, look into everything we know about the Barians, and list everything that could point towards an eighth Barian Emperor!”

“Gladly. I’d love to find another one of these evil bastards and take them out for certain.” V walked away from the duel that was taking place.

“Anyway, now isn’t the time for stories. Now is the time for duelling! Elemental Neos, strike down his Ganbara Knight!”

“What?! But what about Zerozerock?!”

“Yuma, when he used Bubble Shuffle Ganbara Knight was switched into Defence Position. Zerozerock only works on the zero attack monsters in Attack Position.”

“Then he found a way around our plan! Or so he thinks…” Yuma smirked at Astral, and Astral nodded back. “Kaito, I activate the trap Final Attack Orders! While this continuous trap is on the field all monsters are changed into face-up attack and can’t be changed from that battle position. Now you can’t attack my Ganbara Knight anymore!”

“I activate the Quick-Play Spell, Mystical Space Typhoon, from my hand! This allows me to destroy a Spell or Trap card on the field.” A large cyclone came dashing out of the Spell card and crashed into the brown bricks protecting Ganbara Knight. “With Zerozerock gone, Neos will effectively be launching a direct attack! Now Neos, continue obliterating Ganbara Knight! Neos Force!” The white character charged forward and struck the protected warrior, destroying it. “I’ll set a card and end my turn there.”

“Okay then, my go. Draw! I Summon Goblindberg. When this guy flies onto the battlefield, I can switch him into defence to summon a Level 4 or lower monster from my hand.” Three planes piloted by goblins started flying in, carrying a large metal crate. The crate thumped the ground and opened. “Emerge from your imprisonment inside that box, Gagaga Magician!” A magician fully covered in robes shot out of the box.

 

“Now… I overlay my two Level four monsters to Xyz Summon! Appear before me, the King of Wishes and Hope! Number 39: Utopia!” As soon as the Xyz monster appeared on the field it stared at Kaito’s only monster, and that monster stared straight back. “What’s up with our monsters?” Yuma questioned.

“What makes you think I know?” Kaito replied coldly. Suddenly, Utopia and Neos started shining, and they emitted a force that shot all of the humans nearby backwards, knocking them onto the ground.

While this continuous trap is on the field all monsters are changed into face-up attack and can’t be changed from that battle position. Now you can’t attack my Ganbara Knight anymore!”

“I activate the Quick-Play Spell, Mystical Space Typhoon, from my hand! This allows me to destroy a Spell or Trap card on the field.” A large cyclone came dashing out of the Spell card and crashed into the brown bricks protecting Ganbara Knight. “With Zerozerock gone, Neos will effectively be launching a direct attack! Now Neos, continue obliterating Ganbara Knight! Neos Force!” The white character charged forward and struck the protected warrior, destroying it. “I’ll set a card and end my turn there.”

“Okay then, my go. Draw! I Summon Goblindberg. When this guy flies onto the battlefield, I can switch him into defence to summon a Level 4 or lower monster from my hand.” Three planes piloted by goblins started flying in, carrying a large metal crate. The crate thumped the ground and opened. “Emerge from your imprisonment inside that box, Gagaga Magician!” A magician fully covered in robes shot out of the box.

 

“Now… I overlay my two Level four monsters to Xyz Summon! Appear before me, the King of Wishes and Hope! Number 39: Utopia!” As soon as the Xyz monster appeared on the field it stared at Kaito’s only monster, and that monster stared straight back. “What’s up with our monsters?” Yuma questioned.

“What makes you think I know?” Kaito replied coldly. Suddenly, Utopia and Neos started shining, and they emitted a force that shot all of the humans nearby backwards, knocking them onto the ground.
