Ahead of the debut of the Man of Steel’s new power and costume in Wednesday’s Superman #38, DC Comics has released a graphic charting the history of his abilities, from super-speed to flight to, now, super flare.

The conclusion of the “Men of Tomorrow” storyline by Geoff Johns, John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson, the new issue apparently climaxes with the unleashing of what the writer calls “the most destructive power Superman has.”

“And he’s not exactly excited about it because it is so dangerous and there are consequences,” Johns said.

DC bills super flare as Superman’s “first new power in decades,” which, judging from the rather incomplete graphic, may be a reference to the addition of heat vision in 1949. Of course, the Man of Steel has sported new abilities since then — as recently as 1998’s Superman Red/Superman Blue storyline.

A quick search on Google, over the years, Superman has

-Made rainbow copies of himself from his hands

-Made a clone of himself

-Summoned Mini-Supermen from his hand

-Thrown "S"'s from his chest (that power should come back)

-Time traveled by spinning the Earth in the opposite direction.

-Used his heat vision to lobotomize people

-Took a nuclear explosion like a champ, then healed himself by absorbing life from a flower, killing all plantlife in the surrounding area.

-Got Wonder Woman pregnant immediately after banging her (though, that could've been just Frank Miller's writing)

-Given Lois amnesia by kissing her

-Shapeshifted

-Shown to has telekinesis and telepathy

Superman is fun, absurd, and over-the-top. He's a god who can do whatever he wants because his name is friggin' Superman.

Based on the promotional images, "Super Flare" is lowering the bar of imagination to Dragon Ball Z's "my energy blast is bigger and cooler and has a greater power level."

DC is advertising something as uninspiring as an energy attack, something that many superheroes have in some form, and at least a few have like this one.

They should've just let him summon rainbow Super-Midgets that throw 'S's.
