First strike

Whenever Alesha, Who Smiles at Death attacks, you may pay {W/B}{W/B}. If you do, return target creature card with power 2 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped and attacking.

So I pulled one of these the other day, pleased with it as Mardu is probably my favorite clan. But I am curious how well she does in EDH, as a commander and not.

Also, apparently shes 19 years old.

Are there good cards for Alesha to bring back in this format?

[spoiler=Oh, just a few]

One of the problems I see her having in Commander is that 3 power is pretty small so she'll need some help.

Anyway, one of my personal favorite cards in the set. I love any and all graveyard cards.

Builds for her either go crazy hyper aggro, laying down a ton of guys, or they pull for the long game, capitalizing on her ability and creatures with ETB or sac effects to pull value. She doesn't quite possess the speed of Kaalia, but Kaalia can't create a handlock with Chittering Rats and a sac outlet so I would say it is a fair trade.

Doesnt mana thats a different colour to your commander automatically become generic? making her second effect un-usable?

Alesha counts as a WBR card. The 'colour' of your commander is actually its colour identity, i.e. any colour of mana that appears within its text or mana cost.

Wow never knew, thanks ^^

Also since its black, you could easily give it deathtouch because First Strike + Deathtouch = OPed.

This has more to do with the fact that Alesha is the only available Dega Mardu commander in the format than her actual ability, though it is still very powerful. Cutting down to 3 CMC takes out some of her strongest combos.

Yea, Grenzo is probably better for a reanimator strategy. You lose access to white but Grenzo takes a lot less setting up.

  • 3 weeks later...

Twenty imaginary internet dollars to the first person to construct Alesha Tribal Minotaurs for EDH.

Eh, is Alesha even that good for minotaur tribal? I mean, the only Mardu minotaurs with <= 2 power are:

Anaba Spirit Crafter
Deathbellow Raider *
Felhide Petrifier
Gnarled Scarhide *
Hurloon Shaman
Kragma Warcaller
Rageblood Shaman
Ragemonger

and the ones in asterisks are definitely stretching it. I'd rather use Yore-Tiller Nephilim as the general and throw Alesha in the 99, alongside Minotaur Illusionist, Zedruu the Greathearted and Etherium-Horn Sorcerer.

The Nephilims aren't legendary. And at that point, it's probably just better to go to five-color anyway.

I was looking at the picture for the longest time and thought "is that a dude?". In the official WotC article, however, while male-bodied, Alesha identifies as female, leading to an actually well-represented trans character, to help with better representation of LGBT characters in media.

The card itself proves hilarious in Tiny Leaders Commander format, since a lot of good creatures for the format weigh in at 2 or less power. It even has three colors to avoid the Enemy Sword problem (although two ally colors also avoid the Enemy Sword problem). I don't think it has applications in regular Commander (then again, I don't believe aggro has a place in regular Commander). I'm not sure about French/Duel Commander or 60-card formats, but I'm leaning towards no on either of those two.

The majority of playgroups allow the nephilim to be used as commanders, duevto their uniqueness in-story and the fact they are the only 4-color cards.

Also, what is this "enemy sword problem" you are referring to?

I'd assume its the fact that the Swords of X and Y are REALLY powerful in the format. Makes sense since enemy color decks get screwed HARD by them.
