That was a given, really. There's not a single book-based movie that isn't entirely accurate, if at all. The thing about books compared to movies is that the storytelling is what drives the reader to continue. In movies, it's the visuals and cinematics. Something's gotta give between mediums.

But not introduce entirely new concepts and stories that were never mentioned in the book at all. There was no giving, just things put into the movie to make it a trilogy. Most of the crap in the movie didn't happen in the book, or happened differently as a whole that you can't even see the comparative spectrum between two mediums.

Some of it (Namely all the Dol Guldor/Necromancer stuff) chronologically happened at the same time as the book, and is established as events in the greater lore. It's not suprising that that stuff was put in into the films overall, because it made Gandalf a relevent character in the film, whereas in the book he does just bugger off for the most part and then turn back up. 

 

It was still a very poor adaptation of the source material, but hey, at least more of it has basis in the setting than it appears.
