Designing a Standard Combat Ruleset

So if we're going to make official events, we're going to need standard rules which competitive battles will abide by. There are some possible ways we can go about it. First off, some universal rules that will apply regardless.

  1. All YCM and Role Playing Section Rules apply. No godmodding, powerplaying or metagaming.
  2. You can only make actions that your character can plausibly do according to their character sheet.
  3. You cannot retcon actions your character has taken.
  4. You cannot decide the effects of your actions on the other player(s).
  5. You cannot make an action that would affect other player(s) and takes place chronologically before or during another player's post.

So there are a few ways to go about this.

Free-for-all: No other rules than those stated above. If you feel someone has infringed on a rule, just call a judge. Not exactly plausible for competitive play. For example, you can make an action, attack, then jump back and set yourself up to dodge any possible attacks that come your way without actually infringing on any of the rules.

Action Limit: You are only allowed to take a certain number of actions per turn. In addition, there are minor actions you can take provided they flow with your post, for example, pulling out a shuriken while you are jumping back. A judge is required to denote what does and does not constitute a minor action.

IC Time Limit: All of your actions must be able to reasonably take place within a certain time limit. A judge can be called to judge whether you have done this.

Word Limit: Set a definite word limit with quality control. Zai has done combat RPs with an 800 word limit. I would assume that is pretty restrictive for Zai who is used to 2000 word posts.

Anyway, discuss which you think would be the best way, and we'll also set up trials. Also, feel free to suggest other ways to regulate combat.

800 as a word limit per post actually felt like it'd be too long.

400-600 felt like it would actually make an impact to be honest, but I can't be sure yet. But well, the less words available, the more you need to be less descriptive with your actions if you want to cram more of them, and less descriptive actions iirc do make them more handle-able by the opponent.

But yeah, 800 is too big.

IC time limit is too specific, and would be a pain to judge as they have to analyze all the post. Definitely not a fan.

Action limit sounds like a nice way to go for this, though I must add that minor actions shouldn't really need a judge to denote. Usually common sense is enough, but when someone felt like their opponent broke the rule, then they can call for a judge.

Couldn't think of other methods atm, though personally, a set of optional, for-fun challenge rules to complement this would actually be nice.
