Replayability

How much do you value replayability in your video games? Is it important that a game can captivate you through multiple playthroughs, or is once good enough? What games (with difinitive endings) have you played through multiple times?

As for me, I honestly love games that make me want to play through them multiple times. Whether it's multiple endings, New Game+, or simply being really awesome despite playing the same every time, I've played through many games many times.

Some of my favorites out of things I've replayed a lot:

Chrono Trigger

Tales of Symphonia (definitely played this through fully the most out of any game)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (this one is a big surprise, compared to the other stuff I usually replay, but I love the hell out of this game)

Twilight Princess/Wind Waker/Ocarina of Time/Skyward Sword (in order of times replayed)

Particularly fond of replayable games - especially ones with character customizability or plot branching points which prompt me to experiment with different builds or choose different options that would affect the storyline.

The primary game regarding this would be KotOR 1 and 2. Especially 2, where even your character's gender and alignments can affect the party you're getting.

Well, this term is a fun one. Replayability to me would be a game I have fun with so much I can keep playing over and over. Though generally when measuring it you take into account games that you can play in different ways each time and find new things.

So yes, of course I like replayability since it just means it's a game I really love enough to play more than once.

But I also like when games give a bunch of options that make me want to play again to experience it all.

One game that I've 100% completed but still come back to is actually Mario 3D Land. It just has so many colorful levels! Also, I'm trying to learn how to speedrun it without getting power-ups.

FIRE EMBLEM AWAKENING. This game. This game is so ridiculously replayable it's scary. There are so many different options you can make each of your characters. If put about 200 hours into this game, if not more. Also, it's my favorite 3DS game.

It really matters a lot to me to be honest. Like there are some games that I just play through once, and even though I liked them, I step away from them and just think "Yeah, let's never do that again." to myself since I just either don't care enough about the characters/plot to play it again or the characters/plot was good, but the mechanics were crappy.

A lot of things that effect replay value for me is a good post-game/new game+, as in the case of new game+ it is especially cathartic and satisfying to face a boss that made you scream, and want to through your controller against the wall, and then absolutely wreck them on a second playthrough.

I barely have enough time to play games once.

That being said, I think replayability is done very wrong in most cases.

Adding arbitrary dialogue choices to the end of the game does not a replayable game make.  Adding "you can play stealthy or go in guns blazing" nonsense doesn't make a game replayable, as usually one of those two options is s***.

The mechanics have to be create something that is both consistent, but dynamic.  Something memorable.   Dark Souls is a great example.

Of course, games you really like generally end up being replayed a lot.

My attention span makes replayability pretty hard to appreciate, but there are a bunch of linear games out there that I am always willing to play through again. Crash Bandicoot is a great example of that. As for games where replayability involves DIFFERENT experiences, games like Shadow of Mordor where your failures put more on the table, albeit frustrating, are strangely addicting.

Games I replayed the most are Pokemon, and Subspace Emissary from Brawl. oh, and Fire Emblem Awakening, cuz it's just that good.

After taking a sort of hiatus from most gaming except like, Pokemon and shit, for a couple of years, I have a lot of games to catch up on, so I don't replay any of my games, for the most part.

But I DO like when games like Fire Emblem offer you different outcomes, or offer a new way to PLAY the game, like challenges, with Pokemon, etc etc.

And I'll be honest. I've gotten every single story combination in Shadow the Hedgehog.

I've been trying to do that. Getting there though.

Games I've replayed include:

- various Pokemon titles (mainly for Nuzlockes/Wedlockes n junk)

- Shadow the Hedgehog (There are a couple hundred different paths in story mode)

- Ocarina of Time (Only did so because of the remakes)

- Paper Mario

- YGO: The Falsebound Kingdom (Probs the worst of the games I've replayed)

...

etc
