This is how you should tackle a new style, Tormey. The flow seems awkward in the direction it goes, but that goes with the concept or theme of the tag, like a circuit board. A lot of the hightlights on the smudging could be lowered in opacity and defined more on the smudge itself, but it is a great start. When smudging like this, the render should normally be part of the smudge in some manner, or at least blend in more with it. This could easily be fixed with the right brush strokes for shading. The pattern should be relatively the same for each smudge, or have the same basis in mind. Otherwise it just feels wonky, like the right side of it. Definitely keep this up, but a great attempt for your first legitimate smudge.
