A pair of leather boots planted themselves firmly upon a jut of rubble, amongst the crippled skeletons of the ancient buildings. With a smirk of rose coloured lips, the raven haired girl kept her focus us on the green strip gliding across the small screen strapped to her wrist. Rae looked up and scanned across the landscape before her. Teal had been beautiful once but what had once been green was now a desert of dust and destruction holding the hidden secrets of those who were there before Rae and her people. The ruins stretched for miles, the land broken up by the silhouettes of broken buildings surrounding the ghost of Aerycia, the grandest city in the history of man. "We're not supposed to go there Rae..." The voice came in broken breaths as a small teenage boy came climbing up the rubble after his friend. The sweat glistening on his forehead had turned his once light brown hair almost black with moisture and a glaze of exhaustion rolling over ice blue eyes. They had been travelling for hours, following the blip on Rae's seeker across hills, beneath lost subway systems and through the dank of forgotten cities. As Taka eventually stood besides Rae he placed a hand upon her shoulder and shook his head. "It is forbidden unless you're a registered Founder and we're not, not yet" The boy said, pulling at his friends arm in hopes to lead her away, but it wasn't going to happen, Taka knew Rae and he knew what was currently going through her mind. "The sun is setting. We'll camp for the night and hit the city tomorrow morning. If all goes well, we can be in, out and back before anyone realises we're gone" "I'll try and find some wood then" The night came quickly leaving Rae and Taka facing each other, arms lifted and their duel disks unfolded. The flames from the campfire danced around the girl face as her slender fingers gripped a card from her deck and drew with a smile. Scanning over her cards, Rae picked one from the six and placed it onto her disk "Ok dude, my first move is to summon Wolf Began (500/400), in attack!" As she placed the card onto her disk a blue wolf formed in front of the girl, patterns the colour of flames shimmering in the wind as it ruffled through the beasts fur. "And you know what this means, right? Begans effect lets me reveal one card in my hand, just lie my Wolf Zetas! And his effect when revealed is that my Wolf monsters can't be destroyed until my next turn. I end, your move" Taka gave a nod and looked at his deck before slowly drawing a card. One by one, Taka flicked through the cards in his hand and nodded to himself as he decided his first move of the duel. As he gently slipped the card onto his duel disk the image of a mechanical horse blipped into existence. "My Mekanik Stee-dee (900/1000) comes to the field with it's attack randomised and this time it come out at nine hundred! And when it has less than fifteen hundred attack, it can attack you directly! So go, Stee! Attack!" Steam flared from the nostrils of the mechanical horse as it charged forward and crashed into Rae sending a storm of dust into the air and lowering the girls lifepoints by nine hundred. (Rae - 3100 Taka - 4000) Rae gave a laugh as the dust settled and she drew her card, signalling for the start of her turn. Before she could play a card Taka lifted a hand and pointed behind the two. His face became the co,our of milk and genuine fear crept into his eyes as lps dried from the days march worked to get words out. "Rae..." Rae turned and her hands dropped, the duel becoming a second thought to the view. In the distance, amongst the darkness of the night and the soft glow of the stars, Aerycia was breaking the darkness with hundreds of lights glinting out of broken towers and shadows hidden about the ruins. Lights that existed where no life had steppe foot for hundreds of years. Someone or something was in the forbidden city. Taka began to shake his head as Rae looked at him and no words were needed for him to know what she was thinking. "No, Rae, please" "History Taka. The city hasn't seen life for so long, we're seeing history!" And with that she was gone. Rae had taken off, her thin frame deftly leaping from ledge to ledge to find a path down from their makeshift camp site. Letting out a sigh of acceptance, Taka followed his friends lead and clambered down the rubble and towards, what he was pretty sure was certain death. Chapter 2 "Can't we go back and finish our duel, Rae? Or at least go and get some backup. We don't know what is going to be beyond the walls" The chocolate haired boys words fell of deaf ears and Rae continued he trek towards the great city. The sunrise was only a few hours away and the two had set a steady pace to arrive before the lights would be diminished by the sunlight. The soft breeze kicked the sand up to ankles and inside boots and sneakers. Taka could smell the damp that had always come with night and hung to the scattered ruins like perfume on a corpse. Suddenly the boy sstopped and Rae held out a hand behind her and lifted a slender finger to her lips to indicate silence; and Taka obeyed. Slumping down onto his stomach, the boy followed his friend slowly and spotted the embers of a fire some hundred meters away from the broken city walls. As quiet as the two could be, they crawled towards the faint glow of the camp. "You shouldn't be out here, Rae" The voice came out of the darkness as a smoothed stick pressed itself down on the back of the girls neck. With a gasp, Taka jumped up and charged towards the voice but he was soon back down on the ground as the shadowed figure stepped aside and caught the unbalanced teenager with foot, tripping him back into the sound. Rae Grunted to herself pushing her body up from the ground once the stick released the pressure on her neck. A man stepped into the faint glow of the embers. His face was narrow and shadowed by stubble that had grown over several days. Short, dark hair hung just below his ears framing the grin coming from lips parched and cracked from heat. Without warning Rae launched herself and began to beat her fists against his chest screaming into the darkness. "You! What are you doing here Ranst!? You scared me half to death!" The older boy began to laugh and grabbed each of his sisters hands with his own. Ranst was five years older than Rae and already been accepted into the Founders Order. Many of the decks used by duellists around Teal had Ranst to thank for their cards and duel disks. Walking towards the fire, the man sat himself down and pulled a water skin from his backpack and taking a swig of the liquid inside before offering it to Rae and Taka who had just managed to peel himself from the sand. "You're not supposed to be out here Rae, children are not allowed to leave the confines of Angt, the walls keep you safe." The mans eyes locked onto Rae and stared the way he always did when he was disappointed in her. "I'm not... We're not children! I'm a better Founder than almost everyone there." "You will always be a child if you keep doing things like this. The waste is a dangerous place, Rae. Sink holes, falling debris, rouge duellists, wolves..." "Wolves? I'm not scared of them. I've a wolf soul, you know that" "You may have the ability to seek out Wolf cards, but that doesn't mean the real things won't tear you apart. That is why you're still a child, Rae." Taka shifted his eyes between the two as they spoke. He had heard the same argument time and time again. His friend had lived in the shadow of her brother since she was born and from that came the rash nature of trying to be noticed and prove herself. The boys lips parted to speak but was stopped by Ranst standing as he began to gather his things and stuff them thoughtlessly into his backpack. "I'll take you back, Mother will be worried" "No!" Rae screamed as she stod to face him "I'm not going back, I'm going to explore the city and I'm going to prove to everyone that I'm just as skilled, brave and able as you, Ranst" The older boy sighed and turned towards his sister. Shrugging off the long trench coat that hung from broad shoulders, he placed a finger to the small button on the side of his Seeker causing the watch like device to flicker into life and project a duel disk from within its body. He knew too well how to make Rae listen and break the stubbornness she so often wore as skin. "Then we'll duel. I win and I'll take you home. You win, I'll take you with me into the city" Rae scowled and stepped backwards as her own Seeker brought the laser created disk chest level. "You're not going to win this time, Ranst" "We'll see little sister" Drawing a card from his deck, Ranst locked his focus onto the girl opposite him. He saw only the small girl who would follow him around the markets and stores looking for souls that had been tamed but no one wanted. He saw the child who would watch with eagle eyes every duel he played and cheer as loud as she could when he won and hug him silently when he lost. He saw his sister and saw the greatness she would achieve. "I Draw!"
