Madsen
I came to the Dota 2 thread to tell you that I don't like Dota 2. edit: the Dota 2 map is obviously quite a bit bigger, don't have any numbers at hand but it is quite a bit larger (which is why tp's are so necessary). Aerion Brightflame
I'm trying to get an average size comparison of the default DotA 2 map compared to Summoner's Rift. Someone got like a percentage comparison or something? The only actual statistic I've seen in a search for it is that the DOTA map is about 1.5x bigger than the LoL map. But I couldn't find anything reliable about it. Seems about right from what I've seen however, so I'd go with that till someone finds a more accurate one. edit: the Dota 2 map is obviously quite a bit bigger, don't have any numbers at hand but it is quite a bit larger (which is why tp's are so necessary). Please don't make petty comments towards someone else in this discussion again. It doesn't contribute anything positive to the thread.
Madsen
Please, don't force me to skip over aforementioned petty comments. If I want to put out a rebuttal, I will do so -- considering I've had game related contributions in all of my posts. Oh, and, Techies are gonna be the next thing every single person first picks and fails with if its on your team or owns on the enemy team. Maeriberii Haan
Techies is all fun and dandy until you realize that he's absolutely butchered with strategic ward placing and gems. He's a pretty hilarious and wonderful pub pick, like many other heroes, but fell flat against more experienced players due to that weakness. At least Pudge's merit is always there even in the higher up games. Still, landing that hilariously long stun+mines+suicide combo for a total party wipe is really satisfying. I think he's still semi-valid against heavy creep push since it's harder to place Sentry's under a tower, and the burst damage from the mines will stay useful against that many creeps. Especially since early game gems are fragile. I've not seen a competitive Pudge in aaaages, which is a shame since Dendi's Pudge is fun to watch. Maeriberii Haan
Early until early mid techies is pretty nice, right. Also, if I remember correctly, techies' land mine could damage buildings, right? That should help too. Just never, ever put Techies on the same lane with carries. Yeah Land Mines can, but not Remote Mines. I mean Land Mines deal composite damage so they go through Magic Immunity as well. Which is nice I guess. Well yeah, that's kinda obvious. Though really where would you lane him? I don't think he'd work on the offlane since well yeah awful move-speed. I guess he'd jut roam around planting bombs? Maeriberii Haan
Solo-mid is actually crazy enough to work. You get early levels to get the higher tier selfdestructs when they're really relevant and highly dangerous. Not to mention harassing with mines are pretty neat, though needs to be careful when planting those. And roaming do work I believe, especially with Rylai on the team. Tentacruel
Let me know if you have issues with the tutorial, as I completed part of it, but somehow it didn't record my progress or something and it made me do it again.

That's actually a mean roaming pair there. I like it very much. Well unless it gets caught out because wow both of those are fragile Hero's. Maybe not Techies once they get Suicide Squad (Because then pay-back), but still. And I wouldn't do mid personally. It seems like you'd be giving the other Hero free reign due to your pathetic base damage, so you can't trade harrassment that way and a lot of mids are to mobile to get caught out by the mines. I think I'd rather just be a roaming pair with someone with a great disable. Since 225 burst damage at level 1 is a lot when you've got some good disables backing it up. Definately enough to force someone back to the fountain if nothing else. Downloaded. Gonna try it tomorrow. This 'gon be interesting. : D Awesome, glad to hear it. Feel free to ask us any questions you have about it as you play. Including about the Heroes if needs be.
Tentacruel
Okay, serious question, would my knowledge of LoL at least carry me through a low-level match? I've been terrified of going into a match and just completely ruining everything.

I've been terrified of going into a match and just completely ruining everything. You will have an understanding of the basic concepts which is more than most people at a low level match would. Since you'll understand not to feed, not to dive, not to auto attack the creep wave, the basics of map awareness and cautious play ect ect. In low level matches basically everything goes, and even if you ruin a game, you can learn from it and learn not to do it again. Likewise if you want us to analyse your game, to say if you did stuff wrong afterwards we can do that. Just don't pick an overly difficult Hero, mute anyone who acts like a jerk towards you and use the terms Creeps, Heroes and Towers as opposed to the LoL ones, and you should get through your first few matches just fine. There's always someone worse than you in a low level pub afterall. EDIT: And if you are really that nervous, one of us can go into a game with you and baby sit you in lane through the game till you find your feet. I just hate that there's so many cool online games and I don't have time to play them all, as they generally require a lot of investment.

I've been terrified of going into a match and just completely ruining everything. Search for the limited heroes game mode. Gives you 20 pretty easy or at least newb friendly heroes, if someone leaves they'll be replaced by a bot, and basics from League should hold you over for a couple games. Play carefully and watch for enemies overextending. Punish stupid shit.
Makο
Ok, so I've played through the first tutorial and half of the second. I like the game feel, I can manage last hits, and a few of the complaints some of the League players in here made actually don't make sense to me, but... I honestly can't play it right now. And it's not the game's fault. Either my Mac is doing something weird, or the Mac client of Dota 2 is awful, because the game and audio stutters every 1.5 or so seconds. I'm still messing around with settings to see if I can get it to stop, but stutter is horrible. I'd rather have the game crash every other game than have constant, consistent stutter. Aerion Brightflame
I have honestly no idea what that could be. I mean, is this in actual games against others or just the tutorial? Since if it's in actual games it just means you have a slow internet connection which happens to me in periods. All I can say is check the specs and settings. I'd also try having the audio turned off to see if that makes a difference. It's not ideal, but it could work. Otherwise I have no idea sadly =/ OT: What's a decent item build for a ganking focused Queen of Pain atm? I've been going - Circlet - Bottle - Null Talisman - Treads - Veil of Discord - Ag's - Orchid But I wind up having some mana issues early game without the Orchid, so would casual Oblivion Staff before Ag's be an option? Depends on your start. If you're snowballing, go something like Null/Wand > Bottle > Treads > Aghs; if you're having a rougher start, replacing Aghs with an Orchid gives you something with a much easier buildup. Basically like Storm Spirit. I'm not sold on Veil, though. Only if I have heavy magic damage in my team, but otherwise I don't think it's worth it since Orchid/Aghs are just so good. Maeriberii Haan
Oh, anyway. Anyone here can play as Kaolin, or have link of a good guide/video? Interested in playing him, but can't for the life of me figure out how to properly play him since I ended up screwing myself a lot of time. Well Earth Spirit is like the hardest Hero in the game to play. But there's this DOTA fire guide which is sensational for him - http://www.dotafire.com/dota-2/guide/help-ive-played-1-000-hours-of-dota-and-still-dont-know-how-to-play-earth-spirit-6-81b-9033 If you want to know how to play him, that's how I'd learn. I'd wait a bit before playing him in any live matches, since he really punishes small mistakes.

Aerion Brightflame
Legion Commander is cool, an especially amusing against a really squishy team. Or even just spell reliant damage dealers I've seen her used as a support before just for the ability to crowd clear and as a disabler of sorts when she hits 6. I've been considering trying it (mostly because I enjoy using less conventional supports sometimes like support Silencer). Also added everyone whose confirmed to play it (Save Mako till he figures out the issues) to the OP. I'm also gonna send you a friend request Torm, it'll come up as ingnitus or Barty. Maeriberii Haan
Today was the nth time when I have to remind someone that no, Zeus is not a hero that should ever, ever farm over your carry. Or killsteal. Though, this is pub sooo yeah. Anyway, what was the most used initiator in recent times?

Or killsteal. Though, this is pub sooo yeah. Anyway, what was the most used initiator in recent times? Yeah, well pubs are pubs, and most carry's in pubs can't even farm. I can only really testfiy to what I've seen in competitive VOD's but hey: Batrider is commonly accepted as the best, given it's probably the most banned Hero in competitive events (Save maybe Lycan) so he's definately an option. Especially given how flexible he is with his lanes. Tidehunter's gotten an increased amount of usage as an offlane Hero since Anchor Smash was changed to work on ancients (And thus can clear 4 stacks without losing any HP really).Especially in the Dire offlane, since he can stack his own ancients for later. Basically an Hero with a Blink Dagger and a disable standard can work as an initiator. So Tidehunter, Centaur (Centaur doubly so because he has his Ultimate to allow everyone to initate), Wraith King, Enigma. Other Heroes can work, like Mirana if you are good with arrows, Sand King is another one due to Epicentre, I'm told Earth Spirit can work as either an initator or a counter initiator. I'd say Tidehunter is probably best in pubs, since people really don't buy enough BKB's. Batrider requires a bit to much co-ordination to be truely effective in pubs. EHN.
Ok so I spilt water all over my laptop and was dumb enough to not let it dry (basically it got f***ed), so I couldn't really try DOTA at all. Getting back to the UK soon so I should be able to start playing finally.
