Goose
Located surrounding a bay and encompassed by mountains on three sides (North, East, and South), the metropolis of Domino City was the dueling capital of the world. Due to the geographical constraints of surroundings, Domino City was almost entirely a heavily built up downtown core. It was first settled only three hundred years before the events of this story take place when the people of Dugo, the country within which Domino City is located, discovered it and realized it's potential value as a trading port. The mouth of the bay opened up into the open ocean, while between the mountains to the East was located a river deep enough and wide enough for two large ships to pass through easily. This made Domino City an extremely rich town, and one in which employment had always been readily available. The population of Domino City grew incredibly fast due to the aforementioned employment. People from all over Dugo wanted a part of the prosperity. Very quickly the area within the mountains ran out of space for traditional houses to be built. When this happened, the inhabitants started looking for more space and found it skywards. Domino city was the site of the very first skyscrapers ever, but even before that they had begun building tall buildings. Unlike some other cities, these old skyscrapers did not last. They were replaced by new skyscrapers and those new skyscrapers were subsequently replaced by even newer skyscrapers. This left Domino City with very modern buildings and because of that, it had become known as not only a dueling hotspot but also a technology hotspot. Dueling was not always a huge part of the culture in Domino City. For the lion’s share of its history, the city was very typical in terms of culture. It was only in recent years that they begun to develop a true passion for “Yu-Gi-Oh!”. When the game was developed, it was actually developed in the capital of Dugo, Jameston. However, when game inventor and CEO of Konami Kevin Hamworth realized saw how quickly it was gaining popularity in Domino, he made the decision to move their headquarters. Now the Konami Corporation owned twin buildings on either side of the river, as well as many large buildings along the shore of the water. No one could quite explain why the people of Domino City had such an affinity for the game, but no one really cared. The important thing was that everyone enjoyed playing the game.

Derrick lay awake in his bed that night. He couldn’t sleep. It wasn’t his bed’s fault. His bed was a warm escape from the blistering cold at that time of year. And it certainly wasn’t for lack of tiredness. There had been many nights like that recently. The real reason Derrick couldn’t sleep was the strange mix of stress and excitement for the upcoming tournament. In less than two weeks he would be going to the Northern Konami Tower where he would play in the first round qualifier for the Domino City Dueling League. The DCDL was the biggest and most renowned league in Domino City and one of the premier dueling leagues in the world. This would be Derrick’s big chance. Even as sleep finally came over him he was still going over card combinations that he commonly used in his deck. He then spent what little time he had asleep dreaming about duels and in each one he lost horribly. He awoke in the morning with the details of the duels erased from his mind, but the image of his gloating opponents still vivid as if they were standing directly in front of him. “Tonight I’m definitely going to take that sleeping draft”, he thought to himself as he dressed and went to breakfast. Derrick lived in a fairly large apartment that housed him and two roommates. When he got to the kitchen, one of his roommates was already there. His roommate spoke first, greeting him with “Morning Derrick.” “Good morning Frankie,” Derrick responded eyeing his roommate carefully. Frank was sitting at the table, drinking his usual cup of tea and eating his usual bowl of cereal. This was how Derrick found Frank every morning Monday to Friday since Frank had class starting at 9 AM while Derrick didn’t need to have class until 10 AM at the earliest. Unlike usual, however, Derrick spied another bowl on table, this one already emptied. “So Stevie’s already up?” “Yeah. He has a morning shift today,” Frank said between mouthfuls of cereal. “I was going to leave his bowl out to remind him to put it away. He never remembers to when he leaves early.” This was normal of Steve. As the only one of them who both worked and went to college, Steve was stretched thin. Derrick understood that putting a bowl away was low on his list of priorities so he decided that he would put the bowl away himself after Frank left. Frank finished up his cereal just as Derrick placed two pieces of bread in the toaster and started the kettle. It was already 8:30 and as the kitchen was located far away from the entrance to their apartment, Frank wished Derrick farewell as he left to collect his things and leave. Once he had the place to himself, Derrick took out his dueling deck and laid it out on the table. He organized all his cards and sat there staring at them. He did this every morning. His deck was the same deck he had been using since he was six: Gravekeepers. He was 20 then and in the intervening time a fair number of changes had been made to the deck, but he still played the exact copies of Necrovalley he had used all those years ago. After just looking at his cards for 5 minutes straight, he shuffled the cards together and dropped them back in their case. Once he’d finished eating, he took his cup of tea with him to his computer where he logged on to the Online Duel Arena (ODA) and decided to play a game. Every morning he would take the time to either play a game himself or watch a match between two high level players. That day, however, was a day to play. Derrick begun queued up to play a game an in no time at all he was matched with his first opponent. *** Daniel Hamsworth had already been in his office for four hours that morning when he decided to take a break. It was only 9 AM, but with the massive tournament approaching Daniel had to be on task. The only reason he felt he could take the break was because he’d already accomplished half of his to-do list for that day. Daniel was the current CEO and owner of Konami after his father had retired a few years previously. The first few years were not the best for Konami, but Daniel expected the tournament he was hosting would change this. Daniel was preparing for the first ever Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship. This tournament would bring top players from every league around the world to Domino City where they would compete for the title of World Champion. Although the tournament was still a few months away, there was still an incredible amount of work to do for everyone at Konami. Just 20 minutes before he decided to take a break, his assistant had walked into his office. The assistant, named Jack Mick, had overheard Daniel get extremely frustrated after reading an email from the owners of the premier dueling league in the capital of Dugo. The Jameston Premier League was demanding an extra spot at the championship for some reason Daniel considered frivolous. When his assistant had asked him what the issue was, Daniel responded angrily “why do I even do this? No really, why? No one seems to actually want to work together”. Jack responded calmly, “Mr. Hamsworth, I think you would benefit greatly from taking a moment to remember why you’re doing all this and remember the great game our company stands for.” When Daniel heard this, he immediately dismissed it as a silly comment by a young employee who believed himself to be wiser than he actually was. However, after twenty minutes of letting the exchange fester in the back of his mind he realized something that made him pause: he couldn’t remember the last duel he had had. He had no idea when the last time he had actually either taken out his deck to play someone in person or logged on to the duel simulator. It was with this realization that opened up the Online Duel Arena and queued up for a match.
chapter 1 is a WIP. looking to extend it to include 6 or so parts. 2 done so far. Just Crouton
Honestly, I like this summary-style you got going on with the writing. It's easy to read because it's straight to the point, and doesn't bore me to death with descriptions of stuff.
Goose
Much appreciated. That's kinda what I was going for with the 3 paragraph background. I could try to include that into the first chapter, but it would be less clear
