In a fantasy world, fighter Tatsumi sets out for the Capital to earn money for his starving village, and finds a world of unimaginable corruption, all spreading from the depraved Prime Minister who controls the child Emperor's ear. After nearly becoming a victim of this corruption himself, Tatsumi is recruited by Night Raid, a group of assassins dedicated to eliminating the corruption plaguing the Capitol by mercilessly killing those responsible.

Really impressed by this show. First episode was thrilling and badass.

I like it so far. The naive shonen protagonist killing the girl without hesitation was cool and I'm interested in the world they're in, despite the generic setting.

Though I thought the tonal switches in the last couple of minutes between deathly serious to light-hearted initiation was kind of awkward. But I heard the beginning of Akame ga Kill is its worst part (at least the manga), so it supposedly only gets better from here.

I feel the hype now!

It's nothing new (well to me, only 'cause I've read 2 chapters), but the fact that it has an anime now is giving me the chance to even give it a better look. Still a chilling thrill. What Fusion said about Tatsumi and generic setting.

I didn't have much of an opinion on the characters before, but I could really get behind liking them in the anime, already.

It's just a shounen with an extra layer of edgy because they're assassins. I like how casual they all are about killing people. Lol we're a bunch of murderers but let's just laugh it all off. Main character is utterly generic. Oh, the black and white morality is great. Might just be the sub I watched, but first they say they're not justice because they're murderers, then later they talk about striking divine retribution. Oh, and action is pretty standard fare, though admittedly they haven't faced any strong opponents yet.

There are so many weird and creepy things about Akame ga Kili! it's hard to choose which one to focus on. The least toxic but most immediately noticeable thing is of course that disgusting color palette. Akame exists in this bizarre world of sunshine and rainbows completely at odds with the tone it attempts to pretend it has. I actually watched the first episode of Fresh Precure yesterday, and their palettes are comparable. Isn't that hilarious?

Second-most noticeable thing: Danger Beasts. Let me repeat that for you, in case you didn't catch it the first time: Danger Beasts. An eight-year-old wouldn't tolerate such monumentally stupid nomenclature, and they watch Yu-Gi-Oh. Episode four even included the words "super-leveled Danger Beasts".

Super-leveled Danger Beasts.

Sorry. I'm sure this just a "deconstruction".

The most interesting (and concerning) part, of course, is how much less mature Akame is when compared to most other shounen manga. The world of Akame ga Kill! is black and white. The world of Naruto is endless shades of gray. The heroes are edgy, but otherwise all good, and the villains are irredeemably evil. They don't have any reason to do what they do, they just do it. They are the Enemy, the Other.

Oh, also the animation is bland and the story is dull. Music is by Taku Iwasaki, so automatic 10/10.
