Nathanael D. Striker
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Californias Okay, this is very interesting indeed. I see a lot of stuff that needs to be sorted out and even more to even think about. TBH, I didn't expect California to go this far. I thought they'd consider just splitting into North and South California. So, discuss these developments.
Makο
Don't think it's gonna happen. I can't even see any advantages to it, and if there were, I couldn't find them in the article (tbh I did just skim).
Andx
I could see the reasoning for splitting California up. There's so many people there and the different regions have different political tendencies. Of course the highly populated towns drown out the other parts of the state in votes so splitting would let the smaller states actually have their views represented. I doubt the split will actually happen though. A much simpler solution at least for presidential elections would be to divide the electoral votes according to the percentages of the popular votes instead of the winner take all situation almost every state has. Especially considering California has the most of any state. EDIT: Also, naming four of the six states California with a direction in front of it is silly and unimaginative. Tentacruel
I think it's a bit far to go for 6, but I can see the logic. There was talk of separating Florida into two states, which I could get behind.
Agro
Somehow, I feel there's some sort of Tolkien reference in the "six californias" name.

Really? Florida too? I spent the last two years in Florida and never heard about it. lol Washington state has wanted it too. Or rather eastern washington. There's this mountain range that not only pretty much divides the state in half geographically but politically. The west has seattle and is more liberal/democrat/whatever u call that and the east is much more conservative/republican/whatever u call that. The reasoning would be Seattle overwhelms the east in votes and they'd like to feel more represented. Long story boring, most of these splitting ideas seem to be based around separating large gatherings of members of one party from the other to get more of a voice in Congress. Which in an even longer boring story brings to me to my question for you of why Florida wanted to split and where they would do it if it happened (provided you know). Nathanael D. Striker
Oh, I've heard that Eastern Oregon wanted to split apart too. I think they wanted to join with Eastern Washington to form a state.
