Arcane Scholar - a "for no effect" monster

Ammo may or may not be a problem with this (Spell Counters are somewhat problematic). That said, I wanted this to be an accessible offensive tool to Spell Counter decks since, aside from Arcanite, they really lack such implements. Personally thinking of turning it into a Level 3 tuner so it can create a combo with Magician's exemplar.

The thing with this card is sending one card on the field is part of the cost and having no effect. This card has the potential to do some nasty stuff under skill drain, but it balances itself out with the once per turn clause combined with the fact that spell counter decks suffer greatly under drain. It seems to be more of a counter to drain for spell counter decks. Looks like a fun card.

Also the sending of the card can't be negated since it's part of the cost so breakthrough/fiendish mean nothing to this. It's practically guaranteed removal!

Excuse my ignorance, but what does 'for no Effect', entail? I don't want to write up an in depth review and then have completely misinterpreted that portion of the text, ultimately changing the role of the card. However, there is a portion that I can review that doesn't really depend on what 'for no Effect' means.

The use of spell counters as ammo, I thought, would be problematic concerning playability/usability for the card. However, now that I see the rest of the effect, I realize that this is a much needed handicap. Able to grab spell counters anywhere on the field, this card is then able to not only get over troublesome lockdown cards and take down gargantuan bosses, but it also doesn't trigger 'upon being targeted' or 'destruction' effects. That is quite a bit of power packed into such a tiny package. However, I'll save any further judgment and verdict once clarification is achieved.

Despite its lackabilities, I really can have fun with Spell Counters, so props for that.

LOVE the art, too. Out of curiosity, did you get it from JazinKay's photobucket or is there another equally good source out there I'm unaware of?

The "for no effect" part throws me. If it means what Nightmare here suggests, it may be just a bit too brutal. It would be virtually uncounterable, from my understanding.

Still, a good card.

Wowzers, a lot of reviews!

Okay, first and foremost: The "for no Effect" implies exactly what Nightmare wrote; basically, the entirety of this card's lore (the spell counter removal and monster removal) happen at the same time as a cost, and no effect takes place afterword. So Fiendish and Breakthrough and Skill Drain can't touch it.

Now that I've clarified what that clause means, this card is clearly quite powerful, as all of you said. It's REALLY difficult to counter, but the thing is, it also requires you to run a Spell Counter deck - notoriously inconsistent and difficult, if I may add. This card itself can't get counters, so you need some form of Spell Counter support, which inherently weakens your build. The card is meant to compensate for Spell Counter decks' lack of ability to get out of sticky situations (Skill Drain, as one reviewer pointed out, absolutely decimates these decks). There are a lot of ways to disable and counter Spell Counters, so I figured one decent effect monster would really help!

The art is from JazinKay's albums, TheStarEnigma!

Thank you, and a thanks to Nightmare, for the clarification. I had planned to write an in-depth review on this, but am currently lacking the motivation to do so, plus it is obviously apparent that you have taken in to account where this card would be run and why it needs to have the effects that it does. There really isn't any point in me taking four paragraphs to tell you that you've created a good, if not great, card.

Something that I can be nitpicky about though is the flavor. Particularly the picture. As said before, it really does appear to be something that would be more at home in a cyber-based motif or perhaps a part of the T.G. archetype. This clashes with the rest of the card's flavor that so obviously screams old time spellcaster. While the youthfulness and innocence represent in the sorceress is akin to what you are trying to achieve, the rest of the picture takes away from the overall flavor. Not that this is any big issue, but it was going to be included in the review and was truthfully the only part that I could see where improvement could be had. Great job!

Comments much appreciated! And yeah, someone else also mentioned that the artwork is unfitting. I'm going to try and find a better piece, and when I do, I'll be sure to comment it!

If you are wanting some suggestions:

Here is one that I found in Kyng's Custom Artwork Dump. Still not 'perfect' for the flavor, but I think it is an improvement. (tries to live vicariously through you)

Please not another goddamn anime girl

it doesn't match "Arcane Scholar" at all

it's not arcane or related to arcana

and it's not a scholar

at least the first one was cool and unusual

WHY

How is it not related to the arcane? It is holding a luminescent staff and glowing tome. Besides, the first one is still there...
