Dark Magic Summoner

You can tribute this face-up monster and discard 1 card: Special Summon from your Deck 1 "Dark Magician" monster. You can banish this monster from your Graveyard while you control face up "Dark Magician" monster: Add 1 Spell card from your Graveyard to your hand.

Really like the card effect! I would definitely run a copy of this card in my Dark Magician decks (yes, I've made several XD)

Some things, though:

  • Artwork: Really don't like it (as it re-uses an actual monster's art from the show)...however, I suppose I understand that you can't really find much better, given the circumstances.
  • Effect, Part 1: Summoning: Yes. Yes. Exceptional, tbh. You need to have the card out to actually use its effect, and the cost (tribute+discard) is significant enough to warrant the lack of extra conditions. Really well done.
  • Effect, Part 2: Spell Recycling: This is where the card gets kind of iffy. Not that its a bad effect, but the thing is, the condition's too easy to fulfill. You're obviously running this card in a Spellcaster deck, so like, Spell recycling's bound to become super easy. Issues that I foresee with this: Shaddoll Fusion, Dark Hole (not major, but still significant), Sage's Stone. I think if you limited it to "While you control a "Dark Magician" monster", then you'd be a lot better off. Dark Magician is still a weak archetype, so in my opinion, the free Spell recycling won't make the archetype too powerful (Eye of Timeas, Dark Magic Attack, and Dark Hole begin recycled won't really make the Deck too powerful - if anything, it adds a much needed utility). Put this in Spellbooks and Shaddolls and you start having issues.
  • Overall Usefulness: VERY USEFUL CARD. Don't take that lightly; any Dark Magician deck would use it. Both effects are exceptional, so there's no reason not to use it. However, keeping that in mind, the card loses a lot of its effectiveness in a Spellcaster Deck because its a dragon. It works really well for, say, Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight, but at the same time, there are a lot of combos that this card doesn't get to fulfill due to its Dragon (non-Spellcaster) type - namely, Magical Exemplar combos. My advice: add a clause, "This card is also treated as a Spellcaster-type monster while on the field, in your hand, or in the Graveyard."

In summary, I really like the card! Its useful and its effects are nice, plus it fits (for the most part) Dark Magician decks really nicely.

Recommended Improvements:

  • Add the noted limitation on the Spell recycling effect.
  • Add the noted Spellcaster-type clause (this is really just coming from me as an avid Spellcaster user; other people may say this change is wholly unnecessary)
