Fall set. Sarkhan Vol's homeworld. Large-Small-Large block structure (with a yet-announced twist). Other hints:

- Something that we've been wanting for a long time is coming back.
- Something that we've been wanting for a long time is making its first appearance ever.

And I was so sure of return to kamigawa...

Kamigawa is the one plane Wizards has pretty much confirmed they're never returning to. If they were to redo Japanese mythology, they would make a whole new Japanese plane.

The grounds upon which I believed we would return to Kamigawa are:

1.) Maro is a lier so anything he says that contradicts my beliefs is invalid

2.) Theros block contained legendary support in the form of Hero's Podium i.e. seeding for next set

3.) First expansion in Modern was Mirrodin. Cue Scars of Mirrodin. After a new plane (Innistrad) we returned to Ravnica, Modern's second expansion. We are just finishing up the new plane Theros, so logic dictated that we would return to the third plane used in modern, which was Kamigawa.

Sadly this is all invalid now.

The Other of the Modern Block is
8th Edition > Mirrodin > Kamigawa >9th Edition>Then Ravnica

The art made me think Mongolian influence. The plane having no dragons make me wonder what they will do for the sets obligatory dragon.

Also, us having gotten two return sets so close was an abnormality. RTR was always going to be 4 years after Shards. Scars was also something that was always planned on happening since they knew when making Mirrodin that we would be returning to the world with the Phyrexians having taken over.

My guess for the first bullet point is that the returning thing is the ally fetchlands, given that the main thing keeping them out of standard now (shocklands) will rotate out when this rotates in.

I don't know what people really want, though, in terms of new stuff. But since there doesn't seem to be any other information out at this time, I guess my questions for discussions are:
• What do you think is a popular idea people would submit that would be printed?
• What do you think will be the twist with this structure this time?

Modern doesn't actually have that great of mana. And Wizards has stated to include 10 set of both allied and enemy dual lands so that Enemy and Allied colors have equal representation. If they make Fetchlands, they are going to include allied and enemy because of this. And it makes Shard decks better because of this and most of the shards, beside, Jund are rather lack luster. Even Grixis control is a thing, but is weakened by the lack of sufficient mana or by the forgiveness to rely on those colors with lands that don't search for the color they need. Fetch + Shock is good, but not easy to keep going consistently. Having Basic lands help a lot in terms of control and midrange. Aggro isn't in that much desperate need, but would only get better with the inclusion of enemy shock lands.

Oh. What if it is horsemanship?

It's not going to be horsemanship. It's at an 8 on the storm scale (read: incredibly unlikely), and once they rotate out of standard you have the problem of having multiple creatures that are functionally unblockable. Like shadow, but worse.
