To those who have been keeping tabs on the new 2014 Sailor Moon anime there is good news and bad news.

 

First the good news:

The airdate of the new anime is stated for July 5th, which shall be known as Sailor Moon Day.

 

Now for the bad news, depending on how you look at it:

Now that Viz media has it, they will redub it. I say depending on how you look at it because there are some pros and cons to it. One major con is that the voice cast will be brand new from what we have been used too for years, but this is not anything new. Pokemon did it, One Piece did it, Fairy Tail did it, and Sailor Moon did it once before. Hmmmm... Kinda makes you wonder if Johnny Yong Bosch, Mr. Ichigo Kurosaki himself, will be Darien/Tuxedo Mask and Xanthe Huynh will be Rini/Sailor Mini Moon. This brings us to the pro, Sailor Moon Super Stars will finally be dubbed. The dream that was denied, finally comes into reality.

 

Speaking of dubs, here are my predictions for the new cast:

 

Amy: Stephanie Sheh

Raye: Laura Bailey

Lita: Wendee Lee

Mina: Erin Fitzgerald

 

Neat huh?

 

Anyway, with all this hype going on it should be discussed, so let's do so.

Here we will discuss all things Sailor Moon in honor of the new Sailor Moon anime coming in July. Everything can be discussed here, from the early days to the new stuff and everything in between. I was a fan of the series way back when. Hearing the news that Viz picked up the series I was hyped, until I learned the voice cast changed and brought it in as it was. Every episode will be seen, including those not seen in America back in the day. The only thing that won't be discussed is that abomination that was the Sailor Moon Dragon Ball Z crossover and we all know as to why.

 

Warning: Like Pokemon, this will give rise to fans who liked Sailor Moon back then and only that, being blind by nostalgia. Like Genwuners, only worse. I'll just have to see bits and pieces of the new dub then cast judgment.

 

Seeing as how it's Viz I have no doubt the cast will be guys from Bleach and Naruto.

 

(In all honesty, Johnny Yong Bosch being Mamoru/Darien would be awesome).

 

So anyway, we can talk about all sorts of things: our favorite episodes, our least favorite episodes, our favorite characters, etc.

 

Me, My fave episodes were the ones where new scouts first appeared: Computer School Blues for Amy, An Uncharmed Life for Rei, Jupiter comes Thundering Down for Lita,Sailor V makes the scene for Mina, Checkmate, the last hoorah of the Amazon Trio, the Yellow Crystal episode, the final episode of Sailor Moon S and the second to last episode of Sailor Moon R. My least favorites are, and don't flame me for this, the first episode and the episodes where, because of Nephlite, normally nice people turn mean, and the episode where Amy is accused of cheating. That one is so bad I have to mute the near end of the second segment.

 

My favorites among the scouts are Amy (Sailor Mercury) and Mina (Sailor Venus). Most of the episodes they're in are either insightful or funny. Amy is the nerd and Mina is the goofball. Maybe even a bigger one than Serena. You just have to laugh at Mina especially in Super S, I mean: between threatening kindergartners, being a nurse, dating two guys at once, getting mad at Artemis and making an idiot of herself, Mina never disappoints. And Amy has some interesting moments too like with Greg or having an intellectual rival. Let's hope that Amy special is dubbed too.

 

Anyway, that's All I have to say on the matter, so I wanna hear what the rest of you think. Time will tell whether the new dub will be a success or a bomb.

First of all, Viz is actually going to be using the original names, like Usagi, Mamoru, Ami, Makoto, Rei (Wow, they seriously thought that "Raye" made more sense in terms of spelling?), Minako, and Chibiusa.

Also, most important of all, Haruka and Michiru are going to actually be lovers, rather than cousins with heavily incestuous subtext.

I don't think Fairy Tail counts among what you're suggesting, as no one had it licensed in North America before Funimation. There was an English version, yes, but wasn't that for somewhere like Malaysia? It was not meant for North America.

So yeah, no, it is in a no way a bad thing that they're completely redubbing it. It says right there in the ANN article that Naoko Takeuchi herself is approving of the new voice cast, and the dub is uncut, so as far as we should be concerned, this dub is going to be the closest to her original vision out of all of the English versions, and Usagi likely won't be having three different voice actresses.

Don't go "there is good news, but there is bad news" because you're sad about this being redubbed. You're actually getting a faithful adaption that is internally consistent. Ignoring the advantage that Stars will finally be dubbed, all the arcs are, by default, going to be better than the original. Really, a redub is necessary at this point. If they're going to be relicensing it so that people can buy a dub that is faithful to the Japanese version, why would they not redub it? You win either way. Don't try to spin this like this is the tragic "death" of DiC's Americanization.

Now that that's out of the way, I am genuinely excited for this redub. I'm not sure if I myself will be buying it, but I do like the idea of it being redubbed, though I only really remember Super S. I need it.

Aww, I was hoping they'd still use Serena, Ami, Raye and the other english names. I guess I'm too used to the DiC Americanization to accept anything else, but hey, what can we do. I'll start with Episode 5 and see how it turns out. BTW, what did you think of my voice predictions?

Most people agree that Stephanie Sheh is going to be Usagi, and her voice in the trailer certainly sounds like Sheh. I think you have good choices for Rei and Makoto, though I don't know Erin Fitzgerald enough to decide if she should be Minako.

Maybe because it was the series I grew up with. Also, I was shocked to hear Serena, Usagi's, new new voice actress. I thought the second one from those days was better than the ones that came before and after her. Just sounded right. And I'm sure you would agree but like the rest of us it is time to move on. I am scared though. Remember when 4kids lost the rights to Pokemon after the 8th season, or losing One Piece altogether. This is why I was scared. It's different, but like you said, different is good. I mean, another instance is Hamton J. Pig from Tiny Toons and Meowth. Both characters had va's who died for one reason or another. As such they got new voice actors. I probably shouldn't think of this as the end. But there is an issue that will be resolved when this comes out:

 

Since there will be a new dub, will all the dub anime video sites take down the old dub in favor of the new one? After all, the entire series made by DiC will be hard to come by.

 

I just took a shot at guessing the new dub cast.

 

Since I'm not all that familiar with the voice casts of Viz I just took a wild guess based on voice work.

 

I picked Johnny Yong Bosh as Mamoru/Darien cause hey, I honestly think it would sound cool.

 

Xanthe Huynh would make an excellent Chibiusa/Rini cause they both sound like children.

 

Stephanie Sheh for Ami/Amy cause she was Histoire in Neptunia that out by the way, you'll see why.)

 

It'd be so much fun if Laura Bailey was Rei cause of how often she and Usagi would fight.

 

Wendee Lee would make a great Makoto/Lita cause she can be as tough as Tatsuki.

 

I picked Erin Fitzgerald for Minako/Mina cause she can be funny. Check out these:

Thanks for accepting my choices for Rei and Mikoto at least. Man it is just so weird saying their japanese names when I've been so used to the american names for almost 20 years. Yup, I'm THAT old. Like I said, I'll watch the fifth episode cause that's when Ami/Sailor Mercury first appeared and it was one of my favorites. Also, will they... nah, I doubt they'll have all those DiC songs like "She's got the Power" by the Overlord of Rock and Roll Stan Bush. And to be fair, in terms of English VA's, who would you pick?

 

In less than twelve hours, Sailor Moon will be subtitled on Hulu. My body is ready, but I hope no one minds if I do nothing but watch Sailor Moon for the next several weeks.

Zoisite, a guy. Oooooookay. First time I heard this. Does this mean that he likes likes guys? I can now see why this was an issue for parents, but hey, float the boat, even if this will traumatize fans who saw him as a girl.

 

In fact, we'll need to come up with a new term for fans who loved the original Sailor Moon dub and hate the new one. Similar to Genwunner of Pokemon.

Well there will be those uncivil Sailor Moon fans who prefer the original, just like there are those fans of Pokemon who prefer Red, Blue and Yellow over the other games.

 

Uncivil Sailor Moon Fanboy: "Viz has no respect for the original dub. That show was amazing. The redub stinks and so do you."

 

You know, fans who will say stuff like that.

 

Still, I am skeptical. After seeing the original for less than 5 minutes it's probably not all that different from the DiC version. But what do I know.

Well I guess so. The voices don't bother me in the slightest, it's the controversial stuff that will get to the fans. Male Zoicite, Haruka and whatever Michelle's Japanese name is having girl on girl action, But wait, they probably won't air Episode 9 cause it has a ship.

Looks really good. I've never seen any Sailor Moon before but I'm hyped as all get out. Only a month to go.

 

Also, not sure if the cast has been covered yet, but we've got:

- Kotono Mitsuishi (Evangelion's Misato, One Piece's Boa Hancock, Gundam Build Fighter's Rinko Iori) reprises the role of Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon

- Hisako Kanemoto (Squid Girl, Gargantia's Amy) as Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury

- Rina Satou (A Certain Scientific Railgun's Mikoto Misaka) as Rei Hino/Sailor Mars

- Ami Koshimizu (Kill La Kill's Ryuko Matoi, Code Geass' Kallen) as Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter

- Shizuka Itou (Hayate the Combat Butler's Hinagiku Katsura, Gurren Lagann's Boota and Darry, Jormungand's Koko Hekmatyar) as Minako Aino/Sailor Venus
