I'm American, but even I'm going to say that this isn't the best way to start a discussion [considering most of the forum is either British/Canadian or from some other country].

That being said, while I have pride in my citizenship, sometimes the antics of a lot of these politicians (and various figures/celebrities) make me lose faith in how stuff is run here.

You can't really say one country is better than another for any reason. Because it's only an opinion and usually is based on how patriotic you are.

Especially when no country has invented everything we always use.

I dunno, I just see some delicious carnivorous goods on Man VS Food and we never have anything quite as epic here.

Neither do I to be honest. Suppose it all depends what part of the country you're in and I must've just gotten unlucky. :( That show makes me wish I could travel.

So to sum up. America! Why are we great? Look at this huge a** burger and rejoice!

As a Brit and a general thinker, I have noticed that Americans are faaar more patriotic than Brits are these days. That's partly due to not very many people in Britain actually being British any more (not to be racist) but yeah.

Honestly though, I don't understand America's patriotism. I think a lot of Americans have been brainwashed into thinking America is ahead of the rest of the world in terms of development and society etc. but really it's not at all. It's only the world's largest economy because it is so huge area and population-wise, but apart from that there is little going for America. Huge inequality, more debt that there is money in the world, culture of greed (I have heard so many people saying how ridiculous portion sizes are in American restaurants and Americans don't even notice) and the source of some of the world's largest contributors to pollution, consumerism and so many more problems. Sorry America, but you're really not that great.

Those aren't really "American" food, so much as a specific place's specialty.

Though a lot of restaurants and diners over here do have specialties like that, you still have to look to find them.

This makes me wonder... What IS "American" food? I have no idea.

Hamburgers, potato chips and soda are all American. There's a bit of a dispute over the history of hamburgers, but it's generally considered an american-invented food, complete with its own patent.

Here's what's wrong with American patriotism: it has gotten to the point where it's unpatriotic to even criticize how the government is run. It's unpatriotic to even QUESTION the fact that we still hold a 300 year old document as the epitome of law and justice. I can assure you that the biggest gap in politics in america is people who realize the problems you're talking about, versus people who don't see them, or don't consider them problems.

Hang on, let me put on my British accent impression.
"Well you yanks would be eating frankfurters and throwing Oktoberfests if we didn't save your arse in World War I."

*ahem*

Excuse me?  America was kickass during that war.  Without our resources, both of the World Wars would have been worse off for everyone.  At least, that's how I see it.

As an American, I am lucky to have been born here.  There is nowhere else in the world I would rather live - well, that's not true;  I would probably rather live somewhere else in the United States, as some areas are generally better than others, but that applies to pretty much everywhere.  The United States is a great place to live, in my honest opinion.  And, to J-Max - I don't even think we dislike British tourists.  We dislike other American tourists.  We find British accents to be quite cute and quirky.

America is so misrepresented in the media because of our southern conservatives, which, oh, I don't know, comprise roughly a fifth of the country.  You'll find that Americans everywhere else are, who would have guess, normal people.  Oh, and the rednecks are also normal people, it's just that their accent sounds god-awful. Hilariously enough, that accent stemmed mostly from the British.  A lot of the southerners in our country are, to the contrary, very kind and understanding people with an odd obsession with trucks, guns, and blowing shit up;  that last thing is understandably badass.

The thing is, the dumbest of us are often the most vocal of us.

Yeah, as an American, I never once thought of America as better than everyone, the best of the world. The current definition of American patriot seems like a huge stereotype of so-called "rednecks". (Which is a very misrepresentated word) I do know people who are like that though. And it's hilarious cause half the time they don't even know what's going on in their own country.

And, at least where I live, it seems to be "patriotic" to mock Obama and keep whining for him to be impeached (I swear the people of my town don't even know what that is. They seem to think if they got rid of Obama they can put anyone in his place....)

Here's the typical "ultra-political" person where I'm from. Anti-gay, anti-Obama, very religious, anti-other countries, pro guns. I basically live around the "redneck" stereotype. And trust me, they're only patriotic in the sense that they love the country they want and think we should be.

Which is why I avoid politics around here, it's just too frustrating.

^This. Which is odd, considering most Brits are either average in terms of income/wealth etc or are relatively poor. And to those who think our accents are nice, trust me, most people round here sound like this:

Ignore the content for this discussion, but that is what faaaar too many Brits sound like these days... Think that's cute/quirky?
