"The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are returning to the big screen in a new live action film.  Yes, Lionsgate and Saban Brands announced this morning that the Power Rangers franchise is going to be coming back to a theater near you in the not too distant future.

The television series that started the multimedia franchise was launched more than 20 years ago, and has been running in some form continuously since that time.  There have even already been two films produced, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" in 1995 and "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie" in 1997.

According to the press release, "The new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world."

There is no word in the press release about any timeline for the new film, nor how—or if—it will fit into existing Power Rangers mythology.   The press release does discuss that the fact that there is already "a deep and detailed mythology" but not more than that.

No mention is made in the press release of the classic theme to the original version of the series either."

This made my day...however...

I am concerned about this in a way too. First off...there needs to be one awesome cast for this. Then, they need one solid overall plot to it, so it doesn't leave strange plot holes. Thirdly, they need to at least keep the basis the show gave (this being the same type of thing The Last Airbender needed to do and didn't).

Cast Jason David Frank or we riot.

In all seriousness though, i have my doubts about this. Awesome? Yes. But it needs to be done right, and with care, and stay true to what the show is about. I'm certainly not going into this wanting an edgey last airbender/dragonball evolution reboot that they expect to simply make money on. Something hearfelt and awesome would be best. Maybe recycle that forever red script they had during wildforce for a huge aniversary 3 parter before they scrapped it to sell a toy or something. idk spitballing...

either way, keeping an eye on this. *Hopes and prays for an in space reboot*

I love you forever for that reference.

Am I the only one who is skeptical of this purely because of Lionsgate? Then again, literally nothing is known about this other than that it might happen. However, I'm curious as how they'll handle villains. At least have Rita. If they intend to make a series of these movies, then save Lord Zedd for the sequel.

Also, we need Bulk and Skull.
