Shradow
So, this thread is a mix of discussion points, and a request. All the time I hear the name of some anime/manga/light novel/etc. series that I don't know about, so I initially read a synopsis of it, maybe YouTube a theme song or two, and if it gives me enough interest with its first impression, I add it to an ever-growing to-do list. By this point it's by no means a short list, and it could use some trimming occasionally. So I ask that if you're familiar with any of the series on my list, if you can give a quick opinion on if it's good or bad, and possibly why if you're so inclined.
Acchi Kocchi Mushibugyo s-CRY-ed Oreshura From the New World Kyoukai no Kanata Defrag Nobunaga the Fool Nobunagun Aria [C] - Control Chihayafuru Oreimo Magical Warfare Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko Nagi no Asukara WataMote Gatchaman series Monogatari series YuriYuri Samurai Champloo Cowboy Bebop Senyuu Nichijou Blood Lad Hyakko Accel World Henneko Yumeria Tokyo Ravens Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Dog & Scissors Nisekoi Darker than Black The Devil Is a Part-Timer!
Also, feel free to suggest series not listed, for myself and others. Maybe this thread can give people a bit of insight on what to check out and what to steer clear of.
Nicο
Oreshura just seems far too generic, and I was pretty bored from Kyokai no Kanata. Steer clear from Magical Warfare. You've got to like the kind of cringe comedy ordeal to get anything out of Watamote. Thinking back on it, Denpa Gonna isn't anything great, but for all the "meh" I've felt from Shaft, especially from Madoka, it's perfectly fine. Although now that I mention Shaft, Nisekoi's really been stepping it up. Nagi no Asukara is fine if you consider it obviously wasn't gonna do anything different, but man, if I've ever felt such understandable characters. To me, Blood Lad done like nothing to differentiate itself from its manga which I actually felt made it worse. I mean, I love it, but... Just didn't seem very much like an anime, even though I did find the animation decent. Accel World is good. I look past the people who won't watch it because of the fat protag, and understand his understandable situation because of it, and then it's got some really awesome action. From the New World is amazing, just speechless in that regard. Chihayafuru was a good one. Especially the second season. Mighty great character interactions there. D-frag's like the most hilarious thing ever, and the others I know were really funny too: Yuru Yuri, Nichijou, The Devil is a Part Timer!
Shradow
Thanks for the feedback, this is exactly what I was hoping for. Except maybe... but for all the "meh" I've felt from Shaft, especially from Madoka D: Also, with regards to Blood Lad, seems strange that your only complaint is that it's true to the manga. mitchermitcher
Frankly speaking, you really shouldn't rely on other peoples' opinions too much, because chances are their tastes aren't the same as yours. I think Kill la kill was shit and there's a lot others who like it. A lot of /m/ people hated Valvrave and I sure as hell loved it for what it was worth at least. I know, life is short, there's not enough time to check out everything, but yeah, just saying. With that said... Mushibugyo - Look at that manly as hell opening song. It's a nice shounen. Kyoukai no Kanata - Meh as hell, the idol episode was sadly the most solid episode, and I like idol animu. It really is just...boring. D-Frag - It works better in manga format as the breakneck pace doesn't adapt into the anime quite as well, not that the anime wasn't fun. Nobunaga the Fool - Despite the wild pretentious premise, nothing much happens. Things happen but nothing matters, and characters are meh. Nobunagun - More decent than the above Nobunaga animu, at least. [C] - Control - Despite what half of the first episode leads you to believe, this has no money gambling shenanigans like Kaiji, it's pretty much just the usual action fighting thing. Oreimo - I would say watch this as a matter of basic literacy in terms of anime waifu discussions. Ayase best waifu btw. Magical Warfare - Never liked it, not even the nano ED helped, dropped since episode 2. Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko - While Monogatari and Madoka are the most discussed SHAFT things, I look back to this one with fond memories more than either of them. Nagi no Asukara - IT HAS PROTECTED MY SMILE. ETERNALLY. I WENT IN EXPECTING SHITTY MC TO BE NTR'D, I GOT THE SECOND GREATEST MC OF 2013-14. WataMote - Dropped cuz cringe comedy ain't my thing. Hits too close to home although I'm a guy. Gatchaman series - There's Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, and there's Gatchaman Crowds. The former is a really old anime, and has not much to do with the latter, and vice versa. The latter that I HAVE seen, however, is trippy and fun. Watch for Hajime-ssu. Monogatari series - The other well-known SHAFT title, shit's amazing and entertaining. Samurai Champloo - Look below. Cowboy Bebop - Labelled a classic, cited as some of the best dubs in animu, it's decent fun. Solid overall. Nichijou - KyoAni's true masterpiece. Will heal the dead person inside you back into a living human being who enjoys life. Expect not to understand the jokes though. Accel World - Generic as it comes, but the MC is nice, or at least imo anyways. Dropped halfways though, too boring. Henneko - Deliciously well-animated, and it plays with character personalities well in a fun way. Azuki Asuza is amazing. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - KyoAni's most well-known work. Again, should probably watch it as a matter of basic literacy if you like anime. Nisekoi - Generic harem that is saved because it's done by SHAFT. Consider watching because SHAFT adapting it probably makes it more fun than reading the manga. Darker than Black - Chinese electric batman, and some others. It's decent action. The Devil Is a Part-Timer! - Most solid show of Spring 2013 anime. It won't stand out much, but it's an enjoyable watch.
Nicο
Thanks for the feedback, this is exactly what I was hoping for. Except maybe... D: Also, with regards to Blood Lad, seems strange that your only complaint is that it's true to the manga.ikr? I must be weird like that. But yeah, I do have to agree that you shouldn't take other people's opinions too seriously, because of what was pretty much already said. I mean, yeah, I haven't been a fan of Shaft's works really until this season with Mekakucity Actors and the later half if Nisekoi, though I haven't gotten to Monogatari stuff either, should get to it at some point soon. Shradow
I'll probably still watch/read part of everything on my list, to give it a try, I just like being a bit more informed. Though I might drop WataMote as it is because of what you guy's have said combined with the fact the opening is 2spooky4me.
Makο
Read Nisekoi and D-Frag! as manga Watch Cowboy Bebop and Nichijou And really, I can't stress how much you should read D-Frag! as a manga. It is in my top 3 of favorite manga I've ever read (I've read probably over 100), and it is my TOP Comedy manga. Cin
Darker Than Black, I enjoy the down side of being 'super' human during the first season, season 2 lacked a little for me it became focused on character who wasn't in that much. The manga I enjoyed, but the anime was good. Shame the first OVA was more fan-service. Mitcher electric batman sounds good.
Wildflame
Will comment only on the ones I watched, of course. Shinsekai Yori: 9/10 Overall a really amazing show. Mature themes, an amazing universe, and plot twists around the corner. Only issue I had with it was the animation, and only sometimes. Kyoukai no Kanata: 7.5/10 Wasn't as awful as people make it out to be. It did felt half-assed at some moments, Kyoani could have definitely made it better. Ending was pretty emotional Aria: Animation 9/10 Natural 10/10 Arietta 10/10 Origination 10/10 PLEASE WATCH THIS. A favorite of mine, and probably the sweetest anime that you'll ever watch. Do not expect any action, fanservice, or anything of the sort. It's a healing anime, and it's better if you watch it at a slow pace. It will make you sleep better at night. Chihayafuru: First season 9/10 Second season 10/10 OVA 7.5/10 Another personal favorite. The karuta matches are absurdly entretaining, and the characters are some of the best I've seen. A masterpiece, imo. WataMote: 7/10 Very cringe-worthy, but really fun. Yuru Yuri: First season 7/10 Second season 7.5/10 Another little fun ride. Recommended. Samurai Champloo: 8/10 A classic. Watched it ages ago, but the things I remember were pretty good. Cowboy Bebop: 8/10 Same as above. Might deserve a higher score, I need to rewatch it. Henneko:6/10 I found it kinda bland. It has its fun moments I guess. Also, loli fanservice. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: 8.5/10 Oh the nostalgia..., it was the first anime I ever downloaded. It's pretty damn good, but keep in mind that I only watched the first season.

Dr. Cakey
I have nothing better to do, so I'll comment on every one I've seen. From the New World Seen: All of it Very good show. Low on fun, high on brains. Trope level is pretty much zero. This is an adaptation of an honest-to-goodness novel - none of that light novel bullshit - and you can tell. Kyoukai no Kanata Seen: Like two episodes KnK proves even KyoAni can't make a good show if they don't have good material to work with. While other shows may showcase the worst parts of light novels, KnK showcases the most boring parts of them. Defrag Seen: One episode I liked it. Not enough to actually watch the next episode, but I liked it. I believe they call this 'damning with faint praise'? Nobunaga the Fool Seen: Three or four episodes Strong energy, pretty entertaining. Nobunagun Seen: Five or six episodes, I think No one liked this show. No one but me, at any rate. The early episodes are pretty great and show some weird and fun editing stuff which I just ate right up. It started sliding after that. Might finish this some time. Aria Seen: One episode I believe they call this ultimate slice of life, and they're probably right. This is a show to watch if you need to relax and be filled with warmth. [C] - Control Seen: All of it (yes, I do finish shows sometimes) Gah, this show. The first episode is really cool, and the designs of the Assets are great throughout, plus it has a nice Taku Iwasaki soundtrack, buuuuuuut it slows to a snail's pace after the first episode and has one of the worst endings I've ever seen. I was rooting for the antagonist. Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko Seen: Like two episodes PROTIP: Stuff by Shaft that doesn't have "Monogatari" or "Madoka Magica" in the name is almost always dull. Nagi no Asukara Seen: Almost done with it Moves at a snail's pace and its characters strain credibility, but if you're looking for something sweet and melancholy and romantic, yeah, go ahead. Also, it's by P.A. Works. They makes pretty shows. WataMote Seen: One episode This show is like eating a rusty knife. Intentionally, I should emphasize. Watamote is about an antisocial, geeky, shut-in high school girl...but it's actually about an antisocial, geeky, shut-in high school girl. And it HURTS. No anime/manga/LN fantasy bullshit here. Depending on your disposition, you will find it some mixture of funny, exhausting, and offensive. Gatchaman series Seen: Some of it, and all of it Okay, there are two Gatchamans. Gatchamen. Whatever. There's Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, a seventies show about dudes fighting THE EVIL CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION GALACTOR. I think it got a couple sequels and an OVA remake or something. It's eh. If you like old anime it definitely has appeal, but if you like old anime you've probably already seen it. Then there's Gatchaman Crowds. Crowds is a complete reboot of the franchise, and has no connection to the original. Both the characters and universe are totally different. And Crowds is fantastic. The character stuff is pretty cool, but the really great part about it is the exploration of its ideas. Watch for examination of the concept of superheroes, one of the most realistic depictions of the Internet ever, and an incredibly nuanced analysis of humanity's capacity for good and evil. Dis be some arty-ass shit. Monogatari series Seen: All of it (that currently exists) Speaking of arty-ass shit: the Monogatari series. If you're looking for action, gtfo, because the Monogatari series is about talking, chatting, and conversing, broken up by brief moments of discourse. It brims with entertaining, multi-faceted characters and the dialogue sparkles in its own subtle way. A bit tricky to describe, but a very, very good series. inb4 what order do I watch it: Bakemonogatari -> Nisemonogatari -> Nekomonogatari Black -> Monogatari Series Second Season -> Hanamonogatari (begins airing at the end of the month) Cowboy Bebop Seen: Two episodes Gah. Yeah, so Cowboy Bebop is that mystical, magical Best Anime of All Time. Scientists have yet to determine why anime continued to be made after 1998, but I'm sure they'll figure it out eventually. If you couldn't figure out from my tone, I wasn't exactly impressed by the two episodes I saw. Samurai Champloo Seen: One or two episodes a long time ago. Better than Cowboy Bebop? Nichijou Seen: Like a third of it You like Lucky Star? Imagine if Lucky Star was on crack. Now imagine if Lucky Star was on even more crack. That's Nichijou. It's a damn good comedy. Blood Lad Seen: One episode Blargle argle. Okay, I can't remember exactly when this came out, but I remember of the things whose first episodes I watched, this was my least favorite. I'm not even exactly sure why, but something about repelled me like oil and water. Accel World Seen: All of it From the man who brought you Sword Art Online comes another bad show. Accel World has a pace that grinds a bit more than SAO and is made by a less talented studio, but in exchange it's less terrible. All in all, it balances out. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Seen: Some of it I wish I liked this show more than I did, because it's clearly very good and hits a lot of the things I like in anime. I don't, though, but it's definitely an above-average show. Nisekoi Seen: One episode Let me break this down for you: If you look back nostalgically on some romantic comedy from your past, such as Love Hina, you will like this show but be annoyed by Shaft's...unique...visual stylings. If you do not, you will have no interest, but you might like Shaft Shafting it up. I am very firmly in the latter camp. Keep on being weird and awesome, Shaft. Darker than Black Seen: All of the first season The story of Chinese Electric Batman being Chinese Electric Batman and all that entails, while other things happen in the background and/or foreground. I hope you like having literally nothing getting explained, because this is a Bones anime, and that's how Bones rolls. Anyone know how Day Break Illusion is? Bad with a capital LOL. I don't think it could be trying to be Madoka and failing any harder than it does. Nice OP, though. LiSA is good at music. Well, that was kind of fun. Chiri Tsukikawa
To anyone that said they only watched the first season of Haruhi, good for you. If you must watch the second season sometime, skip episodes 3-8 because absolutely nothing happens in them. Still good otherwise. Anything else I can say has already been said, except that I liked Accel World more than SAO (I think that has been said, actually), but since Accel World seems more like a harem than SAO, pretty much only because I liked the game more. I also agree with what Ene said about it. It does have awesome action.
Rodrigo
Kyoukai no Kanata It's a Kyoto Animation anime, meaning it's filled with clichés and fanservice. But it does have more than that. There are feels, and good characters. And the animations are top notch. Plus, I'm a sucker for their art style. D-Frag I don't think there are many animes funnier than this one. Watching it is a blast, you'll never feel dull during a D-Frag episode. Every character is golden. Their jokes are top notch. And the opening song is the craziest shit I've ever heard. 11/10 Oreimo If you're not into incest, I actually don't recommend this. If you don't mind it, it's a nice show, with decent to good character development and an interesting backstory, but the tsundere might tick you off. If you are into incest, by all means watch this. Magical Warfare I was SO hyped for this at the beginning of the season. The artwork shown before the anime started and its premise were really interesting. Until I watched it. And it sucks. I never was this much disappointed at an anime. I don't recommend this. WataMote I think many of us can relate, in some way, to the main character, Tomoko Kuroki. Heavily introverted, done with all the bullshit in the world, but wanting to find the ways of love. Needless to say, her personality leads to a ridiculous amount of fun moments. I highly recommend this one. Monogatari series Shaft? Check. Amazing characters? Check. Witty comments? Check. A sadist neko girl that wants the relieve the stress of her master? Check! As mentioned before, if you're looking for a lot of action, you won't find here. But it has everything else. And the plot idea is AMAZING. YuruYuri By the name, you already know what to expect. And in addition to cute lesbians, it has a lot of funny moments and character gags, as well as plenty of 4th wall breakings. And the idea of the protagonist being the least noticeable character is genius. Blood Lad It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best show either. It has good comedy but I believe you'll do better if you read the manga instead of watching the anime (I didn't read it myself, but everyone I heard from said the manga is better). Something else that might tick you off is the fact that the female protagonist does nothing. She's only there for her big rack and to serve as a plot device. Accel World If you liked Sword Art Online, you'll really enjoy this anime. Same creator. It's meant to have a timeline that happens after the SAO world. The protagonist is a pushover but he has a good drive and a good development. The Burst Link system is also pretty interesting and there's a lot to it. Tokyo Ravens The animations are kinda poor sometimes, and the blush on people's faces looks VERY weird, but otherwise it's a fun anime to watch if you're into elder magic and magic wars. The romance is also nicely done and the characters aren't bad either. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya This is an infamous show, and I'm sure you've heard many things about it from various people. I recommend it, but as said before, no need to watch season 2.
Just Crouton
S-Cry-Ed A really good series. A good mix of dark and silly. Cowboy Bebop A great series, if getting syndicated to death on Cartoon Network for 13 straight years wasn't indication enough. Samurai Champloo Watched it on and off when Adult Swim ran it. It looked like Cowboy Bebop with samurai. It was pretty good.

Nicο
How's Acchi Kocchi? It has some of the most awesomely exaggerated sequences of kick the can, air hockey and other things. I quite love 4koma and their anime adaptions, which very clearly focuse on comedy most of the time, and I found it to be one of the very funniest of it's kind.
