When'd you get into art/design? When did you realize you wanted to dedicate yourself to it further?

 

Excuse my nossyness, but since art is something I've considered studying I wanted to get some insight.

 

edit: i've got like a couple dozen more questions since you're like one of the, what, 3?, interesting people on ycm but this is the shit that i'm most interested in

I think since '06. I was designing the school yearbook at that time; was terrible. I always knew I wanted to be a "graphic designer". Then 2 years ago I realised that I want to be an Illustrator not a GD. But I've always liked the idea of self portraiture; painting myself in scenes, photographing myself in scenes, etc. It really isn't about being self centred, but I just like doing it because I don't always get to go out and do things. Mainly because I was living in a country where you had nothing to do, no place to visit, no landscape, no scenery, and so on.

 

It was also much about being an owner of something. I wanted to look at things I've done then tell myself that I've done this and it looks hella good.

 

But I realised this year that this is a huge responsibility and it is not simply about painting and drawing. Artists need to realised that a lot of what they do makes the masses go crazy because people who know nothing about art and design are always amazed from what can be produced. So I decided to change my theory about it. I do more traditional work than digital; that's why you don't see me posting stuff around.

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense.

 

I found myself interested in visual arts in early '09 or so, when I was basically a 10 year old. I found myself progressing until I suddenly had no will to do any more. No inspiration, more or less. Same goes for my traditional, it's like I can pinpoint the exact moment where I found myself lost and unwilling to try to do anything else and it's a personal thing so I'm not going to get into it. However, as I look at the greater plan I realize that this tagging kind of GD isn't what I want to do. Actually, scratch that, I'm 15, I have no idea what I want to do at all.

 

So far I've been just winging it. But I want to have actual knowledge. Where do I start? Where do I start in the vast sea of theory and how do I start applying it to work? What's something important to know to help with execution?

 

Also:

WAYWT? What kind of music do you listen to? Favorite artists, music/gd/traditional/writing/doesn't matter?

How much of an influence do you feel your surroundings have had on your art?

How's art school going? (I'm presuming since you're not home in Kuwait you're abroad studying)

What are your interests other than art?

Do you feel your faith influences your art?

What's your favorite Eid/Ramadan meal?

Depends. Do you want to continue trad or graphics or Illustration?

 

If traditional and illustration, start with the ultimate basics:

Shading, perspective, objects, pen & ink for practical

 

For theory there are a set of books called "Art theory during______" and after during there's a period. I think 1500 - 1800, 1800 - 1900, 1900 - 2000; colour theory, composition (it's VERY different that what you've known over the years).

 

I suggest sticking to pen, pencil and charcoal for now. After a few months, buy brushes and oil/acrylic (but make sure you read the "artist handbook" to know what mediums you want to try out) and experiment with colour theory/shapes and figures.

 

If you want to continue doing graphics you'll have to read a lot of theory and do tons of sketching/drawing. You need theories like the golden ratio, rule of thirds and all of those things. It's a nice read but it is very hard and it is even harder finding jobs as a graphic designer.

Execution? do more versions per sig. When you finish 1 sig, reopen it in a different canvas then delete some stuff and work over it. step away from it for 15 minutes after doing each sig and forget about it. Then go back and start another one and try to figure out what you don't like about the others. And don't rush. Do it because you want to learn not because you want to produce something.

I think my surroundings don't have much to do with my art. I do what I think is good or what I want to experiment with.

 

Art school is good bro, but you have to do so much work. It is more about quantity than quality. Because the more you do, the more you'll start knowing what the end result will be. And you need to do so much in such a little time so that you'll be able to work on your final product with better quality.

 

Other interests: religious studies, spirituality (you have no idea. I may seem like an idiot here but there's a part of me that I keep off the internet for the sake of it.), gymnastics, working out, calisthenics, bboying, lyricism, politics, cooking (I'm the best chef in town yo), and a lot of sports

 

My faith is actually my art. Everything I've been doing recently has to do with Islam and narratives from Islam. I sometimes go off the road just to experiment with art in general but when it's serious work, I stick with my faith.

 

SAMBOUUUUUUUSSSSSAAAAAAA or like cheese rolls, fav meal maaaaaan. Gonna miss it this year :(
