Aix
Dog King asked me to write up an article on my Sylvan Rulers Deck, so here it is. I've tested it for quite a while now and I'm quite satisfied with it. [spoiler=Deck Profile] Monster Cards 25 1 Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos 1 Tempest, Dragon Ruler of Storms 3 Sylvan Sagequoia 2 Fallen Angel of Roses 2 Lonefire Blossom 3 Sylvan Peaskeeper 2 Sylvan Cherubsprout 2 Copy Plant 2 Sylvan Hermitree 1 Spore 1 Dandylion 1 Debris Dragon 2 Sylvan Marshalleaf 1 Sylvan Flowerknight 1 Sylvan Komushroomo Spell Cards 14 1 Dark Hole 1 Foolish Burial 3 Miracle Fertilizer 3 Mount Sylvania 3 Sylvan Charity 3 Upstart Goblin Trap Cards 1 1 Trap Stun Extra Deck 2 Oreia, the Sylvan High Arbiter 1 Black Rose Dragon 1 Crimson Blader 1 HTS Psyhemuth 1 Red Dragon Archfiend 1 Leo, the Keeper of the Sacred Tree 1 Star Eater 1 Stardust Spark Dragon 1 Alsei, the Sylvan High Protector 1 Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand 1 Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack 1 Number 11: Big Eye 1 Number 15: Gimmick Puppet Giant Grinder 1 Number 74: Master of Blades This Deck was created right after the release of Sylvan Sagequoia, an easy-to-Summon Level 7 Sylvan, and Oreia, the Sylvan High Arbiter, an incredibly broken Rank 7 Brionac-esque boss, and was designed to be able to spam said incredibly broken Rank 7 boss. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind when you hear "spam Rank 7s" are the Dragon Rulers, thus the Sylvan Rulers Deck was born (Rulers of Mount Sylvania sounds cooler but doesn't fit in Dueling Network's Deck naming box). Despite this Deck being called Sylvan Rulers, we are only going to use two Dragon Rulers, Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos and Tempest, Dragon Ruler of Storms, since there isn't enough fodder for the others and unlike Lightsworns which mill anything, Sylvans are racist bastards that only mill Plants. Tempest is your main Ruler because you have a great number of WIND monsters, and your WIND monsters also happen to be your key combo pieces, so he almost always has enough food to Summon himself. Blaster on the other hand has just enough fodder to be able to get off once or twice per Duel, but still relatively consistently, and his other destruction effect is actually quite useful. Remember that your Extra Deck monsters can also provide valuable fodder once they die. Other than the Rulers, your Level 7s are Sylvan Sagequoia as mentioned above and Fallen Angel of Roses. Fallen Angel of Roses is a very under-appreciated card, I'm sure half of you haven't even heard of it before seeing it in this article. For simply bouncing a Plant-Type monster to your hand, you get a Level 7 2400 ATK beater onto the field at a +0. The bounce is very useful for returning a Lonefire Blossom or Sylvan Marshalleaf after you've used their effects, or you may even return a Sylvan Sagequoia if you can guarantee another Sylvan being milled. It's useful enough to warrant being put in this Deck at 2, but it is not a key combo piece and at 3 it may clog. Let's now look at your smaller (lower-level) combo pieces. It is really these guys, in my opinion, that let this Deck spam like crazy. You have Sylvan Peaskeeper and Sylvan Cherubsprout, and their main targets, Lonefire Blossom and Copy Plant respectively. Sylvan Cherubsprout lets you Summon a Level 1 Plant from your Deck while Copy Plant, although originally Level 1, can copy the Level of any Plant on the field, giving way to Synchro shenanigans since its also a Tuner, and also letting you Xyz with any of the Level 7 or 8 Plants. Sylvan Peaskeeper lets you Summon any Level 4 or lower Plant-Type monster from your Graveyard and most commonly, you will be Summoning the very broken Lonefire Blossom to pull a Sagequoia or Hermitree from your Deck, though be sure to think things through because you don't want to Summon Lonefire and suddenly realize that you don't have any good targets left (that is not an entirely uncommon possibility for this Deck). With these cards, you effectively have a twice-per-turn Special Summon Level 7/8. Sylvan Hermitree's draw is just too good not to include and he gives you access to the very powerful Rank 8 arsenal, especially Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand. However at 3 he clogs since he has no way of Summoning himself from the hand so keep him at 2 for the common possibility of a turn 1 double Hermitree play (Summon Lonefire and use it to pull Hermitree from your Deck, use Mount Sylvania to stack Sylvan Peaskeeper on top of your Deck, use Hermitree to mill Peaskeeper, use Peaskeeper's effect to Summon Lonefire, use Lonefire to pull another Hermitree from your Deck). Spore and Dandylion tend to be no-brainers in Plant Decks, especially as this Deck can Synchro rather readily and easily. Spore can also be used as another Rank 8 material and you can even use Copy Plant to copy Spore's level, while Dandylion can be a good wall or provide food for Lonefire (this allows you to then bounce Lonefire with Fallen Angel of Roses). Debris Dragon is food for Blaster (you want to save him for Blaster if possible) and is searchable with Tempest. Who doesn't want a Normal Summonable field nuke in the form of Black Rose Dragon? The remaining Sylvans are standard fare and are included because they are easy to stack if needed with Mount Sylvania and this Deck wouldn't have enough material to mill without them. Sylvan Marshalleaf is a useful monster removal and the fact that he mills two upon Normal Summon makes him quite good, but that's about it and so keep him at 2. The other two are at 1 each because you aren't going to be using them that often. Let's move onto the Spells, Mount Sylvania ultimately is your main way of stacking what you want to mill and starting off your combos. Sylvan Charity gives this Deck immensely more consistency and at the same time stacks your Deck for your plays. Upstart Goblin is a consistency engine and in addition, you can stack Charity with Mount Sylvania and then use this to draw Charity to your hand. Miracle Fertilizer is, to say in a word, a miracle for this Deck. Sacrificing your Normal Summon which you don't need anyway, you can pull a Sagequoia or Hermitree from the Graveyard. In addition, you can use multiple in a turn or, most importantly, you can bounce it with Oreia to use it again. Do note that it doesn't self-destruct when the Summoned monster is used as an Xyz Material. At the end of this article I have a list of links to rulings in case some scrubs on DN argue with you on this. Trap Stun protects your plays and is my personal choice card after I had a space left to put in something else. In addition to stopping annoying things like Bottomless Trap Hole, many Decks these days also use Traps in their own plays, so Trap Stun has a chance of stopping them in their tracks (stunning them). The Extra Deck is rather self explanatory, so let's move onto the cards that I didn't use. The other Sylvan cards were not included because there is no space and they are not needed. While Mount Sylvania is a key combo piece, Terraforming clogs and the Deck doesn't absolutely need Mount Sylvania to survive. I don't even have space for Mystical Space Typhoon, and all I've been facing are Lightsworns, Madolches and Artifacts where MST is unneeded or unwanted. This is also a purely aggressive Deck so Trap Stun should serve your needs. If it comes down to it, you also have Komushroomo. Formula Synchron is a very nice card and is a definite possibility to be included, but space in the Extra is tight as a *censored* so if you observe that anything can be taken out, be my guest. That concludes my explanation on the Rulers of Mount Sylvania Deck, I hope you found it enjoying and informative to read. goddamnit names are a pain
I feel Trap Stun more often than not works better than Decree, as of late. One is MST bait, one is not. One promotes OTKs, one does not. Etc etc. Also Sylvans suck you chet I wonder if and what they will do to this deck. Considering I see at least 2 cards that shouldn't exist...
