So, Russia's declaration of war to take the Crimea Peninsula from Ukraine may cause WW3 due to the Budapest Memorandum. Sounds similar to how WW1 started with everyone jumping into the war due to alliance obligations. So YCM, discuss the potential for WW3 and its potential destruction.

Well, it had to start sooner or later.

Now, normally this would be fanciful nonsense, but preparing a bug-out bag might actually be a good idea.  The safest place, should something go wrong, would be out in the middle of nowhere, as far inland as possible.

Fewer people, [s]fewer zombies[/s], less chance of military activity.

Yes of course you'd bring that up.

In the sixties it was not a widely-accepted fact that firing one of those was destroying the world, there was fear but not a global awareness. And Putin is not a f***tard.

I'm pretty sure we all knew what was going to happen or else we really would not have cared as much.

I have extreme doubt in most of our leaders (in the world), so that may be clouding my judgement. But the human mind is fickle.

And another post....guys are you telling me that the human mind has changed THAT much? I hardly think so. We could be back at that place at any day of the week. I mean freaking Europe and even other empires/kingdoms even had their Dark Ages....we could go back at any time. In theory.

Russia is, in a way, a "backwards" country compared to the rest of the civilized world, given they didn't modernize their society until some time after the rest of us did. Given that, not too surprised Putin would pull something like this (I won't bring up an earlier incident involving that NSA leaker). Don't know what goes on inside that head of his or those in his cabinet.

As for the possibility of WW3, while I do see the possibility of it given that Putin did encroach on Ukranian sovereignty for the sake of its own interests/protecting citizens that speak Russian (and because Yanukovych is allies with him), I don't think it'll happen. If it did, I don't foresee the nuclear weapons coming out (if they actually abide by those anti-nuclear weapon treaties that a lot of these countries are signing).

This is problematic. In any other country, we'd be fearing the bliss of nuclear holocaust. But we have something far worse here! It's Russia involved! In Russia, nukes fire politicians! What worse weaponry exists than that?

Stupid joke aside, all the world leaders know that if they actually fire a nuke, their country is going to be ash within an hour as the entire world nukes them back. The reason countries typically want nuclear weapons is because they're so terrifyingly powerful that it strongly discourages your enemies from attacking you. The actual intention to use them is usually minimal.

This probably won't cause WW3.

Why?

Because Russia can't afford to go to war right now.

Look at recent articles that detail Russia's economy. The stock market over there is crashing, in part due to hosting the Sochi Olympics (which is expensive to host). Putin is being stubborn about Ukraine's current political upheaval, especially since it was a big part of the Soviet Union.

There may be cause for concern later, but unless Russia wants to begin WW3 with a bad economy, this won't start it.

Also, the moment one country fires nukes, everyone is going to fire nukes. No one in his right mind wants to do that. That may exclude the North Koreans, but certainly Russia wouldn't want their winters to become nuclear.

Even if they do, Russia + Ukraine is not 'the world'. Unless people start forcing themselves into the conflict, it's a rather localized issue. Like us and Afghanistan.

Agreed. Unfortunately, the rest of the world seems to want to butt in. For example, Obama and John Kerry have both expressed to Putin their distaste for his putting troops in Crimea.

I would prefer it stay localized, but it probably won't.

The best timing of this comes after the Olympics when Putin spent billions of dollars and organizing this event for many years and successfully improved their reputation....only to f**k it up the next day.

No one is stupid enough to have some people on the nuke button standby, and even though we are on the verge of confrontation, there is still some hope through diplomacy and humanitarianism. But then again it was Russia who said US intervention in Syria was bad.

They were able to afford Sochi.

So Germany invading Poland to kill ze jews was a localized issue? Okay.
